Can we call GOTY 2010 yet?
« on: December 02, 2010, 10:29:30 PM »
I made this thread earlier in the year. But it's like December now and as far as I can tell all the heavy turds have dropped (GT5, Shat OPs).

What's your GOTY?

I cant actually name 1 game so I've broken it down into a few.

Out of the blockbusters: Red Dead and Mass Effect 2.

Lower budget games: Deadly Premonition and Nier

Downloadable: Castlevania HD, Super Meat Boy

I was making a list of the games I've played from this year and I found that the list was really, really small. I probably won't have a proper GOTY ready until sometime next year.  :-\

Halo Reach - good but not quite.

Black Ops - shit

New Vegas - buggy pile of shit, will wait until patched and all the overpriced cocktent is out

The two exceptional games I played this year were Red Dead Redemption and Mass Effect 2. I can't really say which was better between those two. They were both great.

On the second tier of good games but not at that level were:
Black Ops
Reach
NBA 2k11
Bad Company 2 (Strictly for MP. The campaign was average)
Alan Wake
Mafia 2
Limbo

There were a lot of other games I really liked this year that if I took more than 2 seconds to think about they would fall into that second tier but I'm too lazy to think about it anymore.

Still playing: Lara Croft, and Fallout New Vegas and both of those would also probably fall into that category. AC 2 Brotherhood looks cools as shit as does Need for
Speed Hot Pursuit but I probably won't get around to playing those until next year.

Super Meat Boy and Pac Man Championship edition look cool as shit and the trial demos were great but I haven't purchased either yet so I can't really comment on those two.

The mediocre titles I played with the most media hype behind them were Fable 3, and Splinter Cell Conviction. Both very average games despite the hype.

EDIT: And that turkey FF13. Thanks for reminding me Himuro.

Funniest event of the year has been watching Sony-bots go into full time defense mode for GT 5. Funny shit.

Alpha Protocol should get some kind of award from me for the most times I've started a game this year and then realized I'd rather be hitting my penis with a hammer instead of playing it award.

This is probably the first time in my time as a game fan I don't think I have a clear, established game of the year. I guess if you include Super Mario Galaxy 1, I'd say that was it, but it didn't come out in 2010.

I enjoyed Monkey Island 2: Special Edition for iphone, Game Dev Story for iphone, Megaman 10, Super Street Fighter IV, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Sin and Punishment 2, Red Dead Redemption, Dead Rising 2, Mass Effect 2, Ys III psp, KH: BBS, and some other games. All of which are pretty good stuff.

It's probably a toss up between SMG2, MI2 and RDR.

I think I'll just go with SMG proper.

Yeah, that's what I meant. It's funny how the "worst" game I played was something so horribly mediocre. So yeah, good year for me.

Super Street Fighter 4  :rock

but that aside (because it's essentially an expansion of last year's GOTY), Red Dead Redemption and Alan Wake were my favorites.  Lotta stuff I haven't gotten around to yet, though.

Also: Minecraft, even if it's still technically in alpha.

I put 30 hours into and then I remember I hit the "good" part of the game. And when I realized that was the "good" part and that was as "good" as it was going to get, that was enough for me. I thought for awhile that I would eventually go back to it and finish it, but I quickly realized I have no interest in ever doing that. That series needs an enema.

For downloadable: either Lara Croft or Super Meat Boy or Shatter.

I'm gonna play a second time soon with all the DLC on PC. I can't wait.

But yeah. RDR and ME 2 had so many memorable moments for me its crazy. A real GOTY contender should almost trick you into believing you are playing the best game of all time and there are moments where both of them achieve that for me.

Sadly I've got a couple of important projects lined up for next year in real life so I probably won't be able to game or post as much next year. Life sucks.  :-\

My favorites have been:

Retail-

-Super Street Fighter IV (my GOTY, easily)
-Persona 3 Portable
-Phantasy Star Portable 2
-Hokuto Musou
-Sengoku Basara 3
-Mass Effect 2
-Halo Reach
-Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing
-Lost Planet 2
-Call Of Duty Black Ops

Downloadable-

-KOF 2002 Unlimited Match
-Pac-Man CE DX
-Afterburner Climax
-NeoGeo Battle Coliseum
-Monday Night Combat

DLC/Expansions-

-Resident Evil 5's Lost In Nightmares and Desperate Escape packs

Bayonetta was a 2009 game for me, so not counting that.  Have not played enough of Peace Walker, Lara Croft GoL, and Vanquish yet.  Have only played the multi in AC Brotherhood since I am playing through ACII first.  Have not played Alan Wake yet.

Would like to play Dragon Age Origins, and am very close to buying the Ultimate Edition on PC since I read it plays pretty well on my netbook.

Did not play Fallout New Vegas since I have barely touched Fallout 3 GOTY Edition.  Am wondering if I should just avoid Bethesda's games since I never seem to play them for very long.  Did this with Morrowind and Oblivion too.

Also have yet to play Borderlands.

Has a slight carryover effect to Dragon 2 Age (not on the level of Mass Effect or anything though) which comes out next year so that may give you some incentive. That was my GOTY last year. Although the Awakenings expansion was meh to me.

Currently waiting for the bargain bin, thus I am "part of the problem"

Well they are making a bunch of changes to Dragon Age 2 on the console versions to make it more "console friendly" so that could either be good or really really bad. The combat will be completely different for instance between the two versions.

For me, it's more when I finish playing a game and just keep thinking about it for a long time.  I was actually looking at my shelf to see what other 2010 games came out and I saw Bioshock 2.  I may have been harsh on Bioshock 2 when it came out and it wasn't that bad a game, but I didn't remember it at all.  I felt that way about Alan Wake (the first dlc was really good, though) and many other games (heavy rain, god of war 3, enslaved, etc.)

and yes, not having time to play games sucks.  I think I've only played like two or three hours of Black Ops this week because I have all this work to do.  Sucks because I have at least half a dozen *retail* games to play...they stare at me and judge me.  At least the downloadable ones are earlier to forget for now.

There is definitely that element also. Like you can't get the world out of your head. Hell I read the Mass Effect companion novels after I beat ME 2 and I generally make fun of people who read video game novelization material.

There is also that thing where the next few games you play suffer because suddenly you think every game should be that good. Which is never the case of course.

I remember finishing ME2, looking at some unfinished games, and just thinking that I only wanted to be playing ME2 at that moment.  I even toyed around with replaying Mass Effect 1 as a female, but I ended up just downloading a save that had similar choices that I would have picked.

For my top spot: either Red Dead or Vanquish. I've yet to start deadly premonition :(.                    Runner up: alan wake.             Also, can we have a seperate poll for best downloadable game of the year? Seems unfair to lump them in with all the heavy hitters. Right now, it looks like super meat boy though i did spend about 50 hrs with castlevania hd (Grindan :'( )

I don't know....there's really no clear winner for me this year.  Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption, Fallout New Vegas (when it's working), and Assassin's Creed Brotherhood were probably the upper tier though.

But there's still some more stuff laying around here that I have to go through like Enslaved, Fable 3 (though the beginning already seems like ass), Vanquish, Deadly Premonition, and yes, GT5.  I put GT5 on my gamefly so I too can experience the thrill of photomode.

For me it's a clear choice: Super Street Fighter 4.

Runner up: Mass Effect 2.

Biggest surprise of the year: RDR. I've never finished a Rockstar game before this.

Honorable mentions: Bayonetta, BlazBlue CC, Strange Journey and Vanquish.

Biggest disspointments: Heavy Rain and GoW3.

Edit: Wow, Robo and Lyte are clearly the only posters with good taste on this board.

I still have to play Asscreedbro ... and there are some Wii stuff I haven't touched ( :lol) but I don't think much would change with them added in.

So far my list is:

    Mass Effect 2
    Battlefield: Bad Company 2
    Red Dead Redemption
    Fallout: New Vegas
    Halo: Reach
    Civilization V
    Super Meat Boy
    StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty
    Rock Band 3
    Alan Wake

Games that gave me testicular cancer would include Castlevania: Bores of Slideshow.

If I would made a Most Shitty Games list, that game would definitely belong there. With Splinter Cell Convition.

Got bored, so I figured I'd rank every 2010 release I've played and beaten/completed:

Vanquish
Super Street Fighter IV
Bayonetta
Ketsui Kizuna Jigoku Tachi Extra
BlazBlue Continuum Shift
Death Smiles (NA)
Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu
Nier
Resonance of Fate
Super Meat Boy
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Pac-Man Championship Edition DX
Monster Hunter Tri
Mafia II
Halo: Reach
Mass Effect 2
Guwange
Dead Rising 2
Perfect Dark XBLA
After Burner Climax
Espgaluda II Black Label
Metro 2033
Mega Man 10
Yakuza 3
God of War 3
Sonic & SEGA All-Star Racing
Darksiders
Deadly Premonition
BioShock 2
Final Fantasy XIII
Earthworm Jim HD
Call of Duty: Black Ops
Castlevania: Harmony of Despair
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
Plants vs. Zombies
Zeno Clash Ultimate Edition
Metroid: Other M
Final Fight: Double Impact
Enslaved: Odyssey to the West
Metal Slug XX
Alan Wake
Lost Planet 2
NeoGeo Battle Coloseum
Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions

Haven't played enough King of Fighters 2002 UM yet to judge it... Same can be said for NeoGeo BC I guess, but I don't like that game very much from what I've played. I want to learn how to play Espgaluda 2 properly, working its scoring system and such, but I keep putting it off in favor of other shooters I enjoy more. Only played Daifukkatsu for five or six hours, but I'd say it's pretty great so far. Could definitely see that climbing my list a little. Doubt it'll surpass Ketsui though. I played a bunch of other games as well, but I didn't like them enough to play through to the end so I won't bother including them. (also I haven't technically beaten (1cc) several of these arcade games, but whatevs... I didn't play through all of Perfect Dark either, but it's still Perfect Dark and I've played it already. Gotta finish that soon.)
[close]

Still got more to play before the year's over though. I'm picking up Death Smiles IIX, Strike Witches, maybe Red Dead, and whatever games Gamefly decides to send me if they send anything at all.

GOTY - Red Dead Redemption

Runner ups:
Civ 5
GoW3
MW2 Stimulus Pack(I know it's an add-on but the maps were fantastic and added a couple more months of enjoyment)
Madden 11
NCAA Football 11

Biggest disapointment - Fallout: NV Beautiful wasteland ruined by lack of compelling story.

Is it possible for FF13 to be overrated? I thought the internet had already placed it alongside MGS4, GTA4, and RE5 as one of the worst games of all time.

MGS4, FF13, and GTA4 were all average. Well, MGS4 was legitimately terrible, but hardly the worst game ever.

But RE5? RE5 is fun as fuck. I will never understand the hate that game gets. Sure most of the bosses aren't too great, but it was easily the best game I played in 2009 alongside Uncharted 2.

I assume people who hate RE5 never gave it a shot in co-op.  The single player is admittedly terrible.

Either way, Dead Space is better.  :smug
