DC Universe Online Beta (More codes available now at Gamespot!)
« on: December 12, 2010, 06:38:24 PM »
Started a new thread since the Beta is easy to get in and a couple of us have already tried it.  Post your hero if you can.

I've played it for about 3-4 hours.  The graphics are pretty nice for a MMORPG although it sucks that AA isn't supported and the game is capped at 30fps.

In terms of gameplay, it's not bad to play.  The story is ripped out of a comic book and it's really cool to see all the different DC big names romping around.  However, combat is clickety-click like most MMORPGS with little skill and strategy involved.  Much of this could be alleviated if they allow you to gain powers at a quicker pace.  There's a nice variety of powers but you have to go through much of the crap before getting the cool stuff.

In sum, it's definitely worth checking out if you're a DC or MMO fan but it probably won't convert non-MMO gamers.

You can sign up for the DC Universe Online beta with a free fileplanet account, either PS3 or PC.

PC beta is 13 gigs.  Hopefully the PS3 one is smaller. PS3 beta is 15 gigs.

forget that

15.4 gbs after installation.  It's about par for a mmorpg.  Age of Conan is at least 10 gbs more.

The download finished really fast for me though.  Everything was done in less than 2 hrs.

I might have another PC key (I have two, one used, one maybe not used) if anyone needs one.

for the fps cap thing, did you turn off vsync? turning it off and using d3doverrider made it better for me

anyway, I like it for what it is.  I'm an mmo hater, but this is like an action rpg + spider-man 2 + other people.

I made three characters and only spent time with one (10 minute with the other two to see the different movement styles).  I like acrobatic movement the best because it is the most involved.  Flying seems boring and speedster is a bit out of control.

I'll take pictures of them next time I boot it up.

also, what is the difference between PvE and PvP? I know PvP is player vs player.  Does the E stand for Event? Engorge?

What sever are you on, Smooth?

There's only 1 PVE server right?  That's the one I'm on.

You can still play it like a SP game in PVP but you just can't fight against other players.  I always play on PVE servers since I never play enough to be sufficiently good in PVP.

You can disable the visual effects of the accessories while still maintaining their impact on game stats.  Press I and click on the 2nd button on the bottom toolbar.

I'm surprised they didn't censor Bitch yet.  Indy Club looks mad homo.  Was that your original intention?

It's Queen B in the game but it's secretly bitch because of david bowie

Indy Club was mostly randomly to create a speedster to try it out.  The intention I guess was Duke Nukem by Rare.

Just use fraps.

Yeah, that worked.  Thks.  Even for a game like this, 60 fps feels much better.

Still no AA though but I'm hopeful that Nvidia will get it running with the next driver update since it's only a UE3 game.

Missed out on those key giveaways.  I'd be up for trying it on PS3, but I could never see myself getting into a game like this enough to pay a monthly fee.

lol 13 gigs?

I just bought Dragon Age Origins Ultimate Editions, and that was like a 20GB download, 25GB after install.

What's the key to take screenshots?

F9 I think.

Oh and play it with a gamepad. It's 10000x better with a gamepad.

Playing a Mental Powered Batman-mentored on the PVP server.

PVP is open world PVP like UO/SWG. Heroes and Villains can freely attack each other from what I've seen.

Moving around and melee combat probably feel better with a pad but I still prefer using KB+M because I can chain my powers rapidly.

I think you're the exception.  Most people would probably find it easier to click a button rapidly with the index finger than thumb.  It's one reason why advanced fighting gamers prefer using a joystick.

The combat definitely obliterates CoX/Champions. They can't even compete.

And people are bitching that the character creation isn't as robust as those two, but they don't want a bunch of Hulks running around to get sued over.

I like that you unlock flying at level 9 of acrobatics. I guess it is supposed to be a jetpack or something, but you press a button and you basically fly.

Flying seems to be almost essential in this game because a lot of vertical movement is required to do stuff.

The Watchtower is pretty cool but kinda confusing. It's basically the games Iron Forge.

Been trying to fly to Gotham but apparently you can't which is bullshit.

You can't fly to Gotham, but you can get there by going up to the Watchtower from any Police Station.

The level 30 cap in retail doesn't make since as the high level armor in the Watchtower requires level 45.

Have you guys been picking up a vault ticket each day?  It lets you travel to a special location to pick up a bunch of free stuff and money.  My first time was in the Joker's vault.

I think you get the tickets in the training room.

The Batman armor they're hyping in the last trailer as the ultimate end-game armor is in the tech side of the Watchtower. Each piece is Epic quality at level 45 and IIRC cost about $1k each.

how much have you downloaded? from what I understand, the PS3 beta is a ~200 meg download followed a some very large downloads within the client, plus a large patch after that.  In total it is 15+ gigs.

Date is now official:
http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/114/1141254p1.html
Quote
Dust off your cape: DC Universe Online has a release date. Yes, after a last minute delay pushed the MMO from Sony Online Entertainment past its original November launch, the company announced DC Universe Online is coming Jan. 11, 2011 for both PC and the PlayStation 3. If you live in the UK, look for the game on Jan. 14, 2011. Sadly, there was no word on an Australian release date.

DC Universe Online is an MMO where players can create their own villains and heroes and set out to make their name known under the tutelage of Batman, the Joker, Superman and so on. The PC version of the game will cost $49.99 and the PS3 version will cost $59.99. Both come with a free 30-day subscription to the MMO, but after that, the game will cost $15 (€13) a month – or $199 (€180) for a lifetime subscription.
Quote
IGN: Could you give us some stats from the beta? How many people played as heroes vs. villains? What was the most common movement type?

Chris Cao: We married metrics with direct feedback to get the best possible picture of what's going on in beta. While the statistics fluctuated a bit, there were some interesting results:
Superman was the favorite mentor by far. Circe needs a publicist.

Heroes seem to have the upper hand at about 60 percent. For now. Villain numbers are larger on PvP servers.

Players like blowing stuff up. Hand Blasters are everywhere.

The Little Bohemia Police Station is hopping on PvP servers. More player deaths occurred around it than any place else in both cities.

No lifetime option on the PS3 since it exceeds the wallet maximum on the system.

Seems really early to be release on the 11th.

They only delayed it to avoid Cataclysm. And they won't release it in April or May to avoid Old Republic.

Now that PS3 users know there's a $15 monthly fee you see why MMOs and consoles don't mix. Most of the responses are along the lines of:

"$15 a month? I can't pay that. I need to pre-order the $300 panties edition of 'Loli Rape Shooter eXtreme 2011 Edition XX#' this week."

Also, I don't believe in paying more money to play a game once I've purchased it. Simple as that.

All you have to do is read the comments here to see why a MMO will never work on a console:

It's okay, but not $15 a month okay on top of the $50-60 purchase. It's not on Gamefly, so I can't rent for a month and just pay the $15. Will wait for the game itself to drop to $15 with 30 free days and then play it for a month or so.

So, Summer 2011, then.

yeah, the $15 a month thing kills it for me.  I just want to play the game single player because it is a fun action rpg (a bit less smooth than non-mmo ones) set around DC worlds and characters.

I will say that for an mmo this was fairy entertaining and I would buy it if they got rid of the monthly fee.  Though, I am looking forward to the old republic and hoping that it can be enjoyed more as a single player game.  The objectives in DC Universe Online got a bit too tedious to do on your own.
