How well do the resume posting sites (Monster, Careerbuilder, Dice) work?

I'm absolutely fed up with my current job, and a former boss, now colleague of mine suggested posting up my current resume to these sites.  What kinds of things should I expect?  Do they actually work well?  Is there anything that I need to add/shouldn't put on there?  I'm new to actually looking for a new job.

CraigsList or newspaper. But you can try your luck on those resume sites... you'll just be yet another in the sea of the unemployed though. Approach companies personally.

I found a job using Monster several years ago, but I used it as a automated search engine, wherein they email you positions you might be interested in on a daily basis based on some keywords you supply, then I contacted those places directly.

Hmmm, why did you decide to only cover 4 years in your resume?

I'm getting automated calls saying their company is interested in my resume, but they don't say where they're from or what they do.  That sounds totally legit to me.

I found Dice to be the best as far as getting called about opportunities as a programmer. Of course, it also depends upon how active the market is in your particular neck of the woods. Where I used to be (Greeensboro, NC), the market for programming has been dead since the great economic cratering of 2008. However, where I am now (Charlotte, NC), the programming market has recovered quite nicely, despite overall unemployment in the area still hovering around 10%.
