Rejoining the master race, help me build a new gaming set up

My goals for this thing:
--max + 60fps a good chunk of what's out there right now
--Be safe for future releases for a while
--handle PCSX2 and other emulators well

But I'd like to make it cheaper if at all possible.  also, I don't know if that PSU is good enough or even how to measure what PSU I'll need.

Maybe a PC guru can call me out on this, but the benches for the 460 match my 9800GT 1GB. I guess I should attach YMMV, but as far as I can tell there isn't a discernible difference.

Well, there's some variances depending on manufacturer, RAM, and other things, but the base GTX 460 is a lot better than the base 9800 GT.

460 is #14, 9800 is #24.

hard to justify any spending if no bonus this year, but highly tempted to jump in given the prices at Ark at the moment (which will look hooooorrrrrible to US folks....)

169k
for a i7-950 with a 580
The Asus 3D Monitors are 23k on kakaku too...

:/

You got $159K bonus?

yeah, i think i'll stick with GTX 460.

goddamnit, can't decide whether to pull the trigger.  This will all be much cheaper in a few months and there's nothing particularly amazing coming out soon.

a 450-500 watt psu is fine for a 460

replace the case and psu with this and save $25

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.567648

i have that case, it's nice with great air flow + 3 fans, and the blue light isn't nearly as bright as it is in the picture

others may tell you different but i have had no problems with my rosewill psu

do this cpu/motherboard combo:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.570310

better processor, same motherboard, $15 cheaper

swap this for your video card:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127519

better clock speed, $25 rebate, balances out to the same price (with shipping) as the one you had

Thanks for the recommendations!  Will overclocking the processor significantly affect my power usage, enough to make me need a higher wattage?  I would only do as much as I could without needing extra cooling (probably around 3.4ghz, maybe?)

ugh, $628 after the MIR.  Even cheaper if I get the ram at amazon with credit...this rig for about $575...that's so fucking cheap!!! argh...

shouldn't be much of a hit if you overclock

Everything is cheaper in a few months. You'll end up waiting forever if you take that approach.

I'd still go with at least a 550W PSU just to be safe, or at least a reliable branded 500W. It's probably not that much more expensive.

Goddamn people you have no idea how much that would cost over here. It has to be 3-4x that in Akihabara built, around 2x for parts only. Next time I build a PC, I'm gonna pay one of you guys to build it and ship it to me. Aaargh.

Get a 2nd 580.  Even with just 2D, I find that a 2nd 580 really helps to boost the image quality and framerate at 1080p.

Also, check out the benq xl2410t  and Acer HS244HQ.  They're the first 3D monitors with LED backlights.

Overclocking the processor won't significantly increase the power usage.  OCing the videocard would though.

I highly recommend this heatsink if you plan on overclocking, http://www.axiontech.com/prdt.php?item=92512

It's a little pricier but the extra performance you'll get will easily make up for it.  After I replaced my Coolermaster V8 (a pretty decent heatsink) with the NHT, I was able to get a couple more hundred MHZs and go 10C cooler.

High-end PC is worth it for Wii emulation alone. SMG and DKCR look BOSS on my PC monitor. I checked around 20 Wii games now and all work *perfectly*. Just a tad too slow on my machine :gloomy

- Wii remote emulation via mouse for dirty poors like me, if you have a real Wiimote you can use it

And a sensor bar I presume?

The 9800GT is just a rebranded 8800GT. It's a decent card, but it's no 460.

I'm sure I'd see some improvement if I threw one in my rig, but the benchmarks don't really impress me. At any rate I'm happy with my current configuration.

You need Bluetooth for the Wiimote. The sensor bar is a low tech IR source. Two candles work too. Or two IR remotes. Anything, really.

Bought this SSD today. It seemed like a pretty good deal, $200 + $50 MIR for a 128GB drive. That'll be enough for W7 and maybe a few games.

Getting a SSD is one of the best upgrades you can make.  Once you go SSD, you don't go back.  Streaming games especially benefit from a SSD as it gets rids of most of the hitching.

Use Steammover to move things back and forth between your HD and SSD.  If you want to do it manually, look up how to use the mlink command.
