Agreed. Is it really that popular, though? These days it seems to be all about electropop.

Seriously, is hip hop really that popular? Individual songs sell a lot but albums bomb. Concerts tend to be balls. Or am I missing something?

yes it is.  maybe not in other parts of the country, but hip hop concerts are always on the news here in Houston for selling out and "so and so" is in town.

never watched TRL.  saw too many girls screaming and too many backstreet boys and n'sync songs being played.

the only time I remember real music videos being played on mtv was after 11pm (when i saw my first Tool song :rock) and on MTV2.

VH1 was the shit in the mornings though.  Played more of the music I liked too.

I liked TRL in the 90's. They'd hit a nice variety I thought, and I loved the guests.

MTV played awesome music videos in the morning. In High School I would watch the rock videos from 6 to 7 when the bus came to pick me up.

Too be honest though their video blocks would be filled with terrible music.

True, but it depended on the block and time. Also, back in the 90's there was Beavis and Butthead at least, which made fun of the shitty videos.

not me.  i watched VH1's top 20 in the morning.  good memories of seeing Smooth by Santana and jacking off before school while staring at the chick who danced in her undies by the window.

really?  that's fucking bullshit.  i haven't had cable in a long while, but i assumed it'd turn into an mtv reality show clone for 30-40 yr olds.

It's a considerably lot less worse than MTV though because it still makes shows related to the music/entertainment industry but yeah.

I hear they still play videos early in the morn. But I hear REAL early.

eh.  i wouldn't watch anyways anymore because I don't think I've heard a mainstream song I really liked in like a year.  i hear catchy ones, but nothing i'd care to see a music video or sit down and listen to if i'm not forced to.

The funny thing is I remember when they first hit way way back when and they actually had a bit of a critical love behind them.

It's amazing how they keep getting shittier and shittier and yet more popular and more popular. It's like some Faustian pact they have going.

pre-Fergie? I heard their first album, which struck me as a boring version of a Jurassic 5 album. I haven't heard the Atban Klann (their album before becoming BEP) album, but people I trust say it's awesome.

Probably. It was a long ass time ago. Before they blew up I remember a friend telling me about them and how awesome they were.

Then they sold out really quick.

I mean there is nothing wrong with good pop music. I think Let's get distinguished mentally-challenged in here is a great poppy mainstream funky song. But they seem incapable of even making that anymore. All their stuff is really cheesy bad synth pop at this point like that video you posted.

I gotta admit I really like I Got A Feeling. But overall their stuff is super bad. At times they give me an electro hip hop vibe which is interesting but overall I don't get them

I view them as "hip hop" targeted to be palatable to white suburban preteen and teen girls. That's certainly the market they seem to have migrated to. Which is fine I guess...but not something I want to listen to.

You can feel some marketing guy in there telling them how to make the music and they just show and do whatever and don't give a fuck.

It's weird because Will.I.Am is very talented; he plays multiple instruments, is a good producer, wrote much of Umi Says, etc. Does he feel challenged creating generic dance pop, or does he truly not care and instead just wants to create hit songs.

Dude seems to have a monopoly on the sound kids prefer today

Yeah, I noticed this too... apart from a few artists (Jay-Z and Kanye), hiphop doesn't seem nearly as popular as it did maybe 5 years ago, at least with white people.

Most mainstream hip hop these days are designed for women to consume, presumably to rake in a lot more money from a gender that was relatively untapped from hip hop up to just a few years ago.  So now everything is more woman-friendly to consume.  It became less about rhymes and overall skill and more about accessibility and playability in the clubs.  Nobody knows that formula better than BEP, which seems to be more lyrically neutered/dumbed down with each new album.

It makes good business sense but it destroyed the genre in the process.
