Unbuffered Buffy Movie

Quote
Warner Bros. has picked up the movie rights to the remake of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with Charles Roven and Steve Alexander of Atlas Entertainment boarding as producers.

THR broke the news in May 2009 that Vertigo’s Roy Lee and Doug Davison were working with original movie director Fran Rubel Kuzui and her husband, Kaz Kuzui, on a new movie version. Joss Whedon, the man credited with Buffy life, was not involved at this time, causing much hand-wringing amongst fans.

Whedon is still not involved but Whit Anderson, an actresss-turned-screenwriter is. It was her draft that attracted the interest of Atlas.
Atlas convinced Warners there was potential and not fan ire in a reboot, with Warners now optioning the rights from the Kuzui and from Sandollar Productions, run by Sandy Gallin and Dolly Parton, for Atlas and Vertigo to produce.

Originally a 1992 movie starring Kristy Swanson and Luke Perry, Buffy found success on TV, creating stars of not only its cast, headlined by Sarah Michelle Gellar, but Whedon as well.  It also served as a launching pad for writers, such as Marti Noxon who has gone to write the upcoming remake of Fright Night.

Details of the film are being kept under wraps, but I can say "while this is not your high school Buffy, she’ll be just as witty, tough, and sexy as we all remember her to be,” said Roven in a statement.

(Emphasis my own)

I don't understand why they would want to remake this movie in the first place.  The original isn't that old, and it wasn't that bad.  I sure as hell can't figure out why they would want to remake this without Joss Whedon.  Joss is, afterall, the creator of the show and many other VERY successful creations like it. (see: Buffy the Vampire Slayer the Show, Angel, Serenity, Firefly, Dollhouse, and several comics).  This just seems to me like Warner Brothers trying to slap Whedon in the face for something good that he has created.

I actually noticed a petition about it on Facebook today and signed it, but I've lost the link to the site where the petition actually is.

He's probably not involved because it's going the route of other fantasy movies lately (see Twilight) and he didn't approve.

That could be true.  But it looks like they haven't even approached him about it from everything I've read, although I find it hard to believe that he hasn't had something to say about it.

Well since it's Warner Bros, they have a habit of doing dark and gritty so hopefully they'll move that way.  and maybe I'm wrong, but I could have sworn Whedon is kind of a prick to work with so maybe he soured the relationship?

The younger generation this will be aimed at didn't watch that Buffy show and has no connection to it. That's why they are not using Whedon.

I'm not saying people have to like that fact but that's why they are doing it.

Maybe Buffy will finally take her top off since her career hasn't gone so well after the show ended?

the movie is better then its reputstion suggests, but its far from a masterpiece.

I really can't hate anything with Rutger Hauer in it tho.  Love that man.

It's okay for what it is. I don't think they had the same ambitions for it that Whedon had when he did it.

I've never quited liked Buffy, the TV show, as much as some other people do, but I respect that Whedon took it seriously and actually improved it. That first season is very standard TV imo. But he did try to get more serious about it as it went along.

Josh Whedon has the stink of failure all over him.  Good move.

Yep. Biggest piece of shit in Hollywood. Makes Shamylan look like Roman Polanski.

Whedon isn't involved because he turned down Warner's offer because he wanted to do Avengers more.

He turned it down, then went online and bashed the remake like the talentless hack that he is, and then after Warner came out and revealed they approached him first he shut the fuck up.

Still yet, disrespectful to Whedon.  It's not like Warner had to do the movie RIGHT AWAY.  You can't tell me that if you had created something like this, and then you were approached to re-do it a few years later while you were in the middle of another project, that you wouldn't be upset when they went ahead and re-did your project without you?

I would say that studios want to make money now, not when you have time to remake things.

I still think that Buffy is WAY WAY too soon to remake anyways.

He wasn't in the middle of anything. Warner approached him right after Dollhouse was canned. He decided to fuck up Avengers instead. They gave him the first chance to do it, he turned them down for Avengers and then attacked Warner for doing it behind his back. Once the truth came out he shut up.
