You don't have to actually constantly draw in FF8. There are replenishing points with magic all over the map

When I beat Shenmue back in the day I always thought all the praise it got was really weird.

By the time I got around to playing 2 which was better it felt so outdated I got bored and stopped rather quickly.

Series always seemed like it was custom made for those with a japan fetish in all ways. For the rest of us it was mainly just kinda boring with bad American voice acting.

I like the forklift bits. I always create a game when doing it. Like,"stack all of these boxes before noon time" or something so I could have more time to explore. Disc 3 of Shenmue is pretty good at that because one minute you're stacking boxes with a forklift, the next you're beating up foreigners. It was fun.

I thought there were a lot of good ideas in Shenmue. It's something I want to like but the execution just doesn't satisfy my tastes. I just think its not actually a very fun game unless you have very specific cultural or niche interest.

I kinda feel the same way about the Yakuza series.

But then there are also American games that feel that same way. The Mafia series is almost solely dependent upon finding that culture interesting. If you don't, the game itself probably isn't strong enough to pull you through.

My love for Shenmue 1 has nothing to do with Japan, but I'll admit Shenmue II made me more interested in China.

Either way, it's an adventure game and very very slow. It has a certain flow, and I find it a really relaxing game. My enjoyment has nothing to do with culture. That said, I'll be first to admit Shenmue, especially the first one, is a huge grower. First session I ever played it, I thought it was horrible but showed promise, but the more I played it the more I liked it. *shrug*

Same thing goes with Yakuza. It involves a man who curb stomps people into the ground. What's not to like?!

Heavy Rain is Shenmue but not boring or shitty.  I used to like Shenmue but I used to like some really shitty games.  FF8 is still the best FF (except maybe VI but I haven't played that in ages).

I beat Shenmue and got a ways into Shenmue 2 before I quit that.  It was just boring the shit out of me, and Ryo's obvious high-functioning low-IQ issues had long ceased being amusing.

And magus, most other years you'd have me with that SEGA fan thing, but they actually had a surprisingly kicking 2010.  It's an anomaly I don't expect to repeat.

Did you ever get around to sonic colors?  Its the first modern sonic game that I felt wasn't flawed on a fundamental level.
