Tell me about life in New England, particularly Massachusetts
« on: January 16, 2011, 11:22:27 PM »
I'm from the south. I've never lived further than North Carolina in terms of geography.

It looks like the Massachusetts film studio plan is going to work out because the Hollywood East movement has been approved for over 160 mill from the state of MA.

This means once those studios doors open up, maybe even sooner, I'm heading to live up north. Sure, I could try my chances in California, but I don't want to.

So tell me about life in NE. I've visited but never lived there. I'm talking about a home for the rest of my life here. I'll be living in Plymouth and hitting up Boston regularly. So a future New Englander, what can I expect? :D

Lots more BBC lovers, at least ones that are more open about it, but they're not as cute as Southern belles.

Boston loves to compete with New York but it really is a huge downgrade in almost every aspect.  With so many famous Universities in the area, you'd think there won't be many dirty uneducated poors but there are.

Things to hate about New England:

1.  The Weather
2.  The People

what's wrong with both?

The people are poorly dressed, kinda ugly and often racist in subtle ways.

I vacation in Cape Cod every summer. It's great.  It's not commercialized and the people are very friendly there. Traffic is bad in the summer, though.

Is MA as racist as people say it is? I know this question is purely anecdotal.

There's racism but it's not exactly the same type of racism as in the South.  According to my Boston relatives, it's more like a subpart of the greater classism.

So it's purely socio-economics? That's every city and town in America.

Lots of old school Irish pride in Mass which is where some of that subtle ingrained racism seems to stem from, especially in places like Southie and other outlying Boston areas.

Weather: Humid in the Summer, cold and miserable in the Winter. Beautiful in the Spring and at its best in the Fall (between the end of August and end of October). That smell of burning wood, cold crisp air all around you and hearing the leaves rustling against each other... nothing like it.

Landscape: Lots of damn hills

Things to see and do: Lots of historical places (as you said you had interest in, Himu), if you live near Boston there's great nightlife (as long as you avoid the fuck heads), lots and lots of places to eat in Boston (especially Seafood and Italian). Boston isn't as complex or accessible as New York as far as public transit but they have a system in place inside of Boston that gets you in the general area of where you want to be. This makes it fun to just hang out in Boston and take it in. On the flip driving IN Boston fucking sucks so hard. Its like the place retained the roads made for horse drawn carriages and its like a maze at times.

Other stuff: If you do come here, you'll want to try and visit Vermont and Maine too (either, or). Its nice in Mass but the land is stunning up there. Its about a 3 hour drive.

Where are some awesome places I can visit, blutsu?!

Also, admittedly, I'm kinda scared because of what I hear about the racial relations there, but it seems more socio-economical more so than it has to do with race, and that can be said for a giant portion of America. Many people have trouble distinguishing a difference and lump the two together.

Still...
