How hot is your 360?
« on: January 17, 2011, 05:01:30 AM »
My 360-S is really hot. It warms up anything around it pretty handily. The 360-old never seemed to get this hot in either orientation. Is this normal?

My 360-S is stood on its end, so it is in the vertical orientation. Is that sub-optimal?

dead cold :'(

To answer your question

If the air flow(from the fan) is good, then yes...heat is going outside, good thing

But you should compare with other 360S owners

I once accidentally left a game case resting on the fan port on my 360-S (in vertical orientation) and it warped the plastic.

Really hot, seeing as how it's likely in a garbage dump by now.

I'm playing mine for the past hour and half and it runs mostly cool except for the heat coming off its back; but it is running off of the hard drive since RDR is installed.

When I played Alan Wake dlc2, it was heating up more and it was the loudest I've ever heard it.  I thought it was dying.

The S has the power supply inside the chassis, right?  If so, that's probably why it's hotter.

Different hardware have different heat tolerance though so it's not really possible to just use temperature as an indication of hardware health.  Many videocards, for example, run 20 to 30 degrees C hotter than videocards from 5 yrs ago.

I'd assume that the more recent, higher spec graphic cards would have a hotter running temp. The 360 is ostensibly the same spec, but I do understand that the smaller manufacturing method is supposed to make it cooler, not hotter.

The power supply on the 360-S is still external, by the way.

No, it's still external, just smaller.

When it first reads a disc it gets pretty loud, otherwise dead silent.

What other advantages does the S have over a phat?  I was all ready to trade in my phat for a S but the local Gamestop didn't have stock for a long time and my excitement just died.

the system itself really is "whisper quiet."

The power and open tray buttons are touch sensitive and kind of awesome. It makes a little chime when you turn the system on that's pretty sick. The sync button for controller sync is really big and clicky. That's about it.
