They raise good points. Many blacks only know how to consume rather than produce, but this is true for all races. Black folks do themselves a disservice by not trying to tackle these issues head on rather than ignoring them and always using the age old "well they're poor rebuttal", not that ISN'T an excuse. I know my share of blacks who weren't even from poor families who fall in the same trap.

Not to say it's for all cases, but it definitely happens. It's also interesting to note that this is mostly an American issue from what I've seen. Every African, British;etc black immigrant or exchange student I've seen works their asses off. You could argue it's a very American problem.

I had to accept a leadership award for my dad at a high school a couple weeks ago; it was like a black leaders award or something, for Black History month, plus the best students were given awards as well. Anyway I was talking to an older dude who was receiving an award and he said the school was about 60% black, 40% white; out of the 10 awards that were given for academic excellence, 9 went to white kids. It struck me as quite an awkward situation, especially during Black History Month.

And this wasn't in some bad school district, it was in one of the best in the state, very high tax base, successful parents etc. I don't get it.

My mom's argument is basically that white teachers put more effort into guiding and teaching white children; calling their parents if their grades drop, writing specific things on their papers, etc. Whereas with a black kid a teacher passes them grade to grade, doesn't contact the parents because they assume the parents don't care, etc.

I'm sure there are plenty of teachers like that, but to explain the performance gap based on this is far too conspiracy theorist for me

A call bullshit because when I was a kid, we had to have our parents sign our progress reports and report cards.

I have very little experience with that stuff for obviously. Most people I've talked to said everyone got progress reports and stuff. So I'm guessing the argument becomes that while everyone gets progress reports, considerably more effort is put into a white kid's reports.

I think that with black students the parents expect less of you. That seems to be the case in general. When you are a black American, you are expected to fail, pretty much. Lack of blacks in the sciences and the arts support this statistic. It's not so much that blacks are incapable as it is for the most part, there's few willing to give you encouragement. Many will make fun of you for even thinking of having high prospects because lol you can't do it cuz i can't do it. Of course, this is just a symptom of anti-intellectualism and it's hardly inclusive to the black American community.
