The trivia thread on GAF has taught me that time runs slower in SMB3 when you're running. Street Fighter time is also slower than actual time. Maybe to make it easier to see it ticking down? Or because however many actual seconds aren't enough, but they couldn't display a bigger number, so instead they stretched time, which then became a tradition and here we are?
