I read a few details about this earlier today that I thought were just insane. Supposedly they weren't able to get bright enough fireworks from vendors so they took to finding Angel Flares from military connections. The very same used to detour heat seeking missiles. They also broke several records for most fireworks used, largest choreographed performance, loudest/largest audio setup, and a bunch of others. Apparently Hong Kong also got into the spirit with a huge display, but I can't find it online.
