Holy shit, those anecdotes are ruthless. People in remote villages for whom we could have been the Soviets for all they know and care. We should have mopped whatever looked like terrorist training grounds and just left. Would have been better for everyone involved.

Yup. Either that or full on imperialism for 150 years. Dropping pamphlets would have brought about as much democracy to the 'country' as what we ended up doing.
