On Kimmel, Baldwin said he had NO IDEA what he was going to do, right up until he stood in front of the camera. He also said, though, that the makeup room was like a scene from an insane asylum.

To piggyback onto this: Pay close attention next time you listen to someone you think of as articulate. You'll be surprised by how often they fuck up.

Pausing has to be practiced as well. If you pause for too long it can sound really awkward. Never pause for a full second, and don't mainting eye contact while you are pausing.

Alternatively, do it like John Carmack and replace fillers with "I" and start almost every sentence that way.
