Being demoted is something that could realistically impact him for 6 or 7 figures of €. Veyrat has a high media profile so it's probably a little dramatic an estimation but not all that crazy. I mean beyond the restaurant prices (and hotel hosting attached, I believe) there's a whole host of potential other establishments he might have opened, international appearances, media contracts, lending your name to some factory food
Also that's apparently an old story. He gave back all his stars, asked to be delisted (Michelin is not accepting) and there was a bunch of litigation over it.

Reminds me of the phrase “revenge bedtime.” A guy at my last company would work 10-12 hour days, and then stay up until 2 or 3am to take some time for himself. Frequently overslept and was late to check in, which got him in trouble despite the overtime, which made him need more time to himself. Vicious cycle.
