I'm racking my brain, and I can honestly say that I don't know anything about Mercury Fred other than these two traits:

Turtles are the smelliest pets in the world.  The cat has potential to smell, depending on how responsible he is, and the ferret could get a good stink up too.  The rest of the reptiles are quite odorless.

I find people who *don't* have animals a lot more creepy than people who do.  It suggests sociopathy.

- No more community threads; "too inclusive and separates the community"
- Censorship.
- No animated avatars.
- As of now, no avatars period.
- No dedicated search function.
- Community has dwindled over the years. More interesting posters have been driven off while more annoying ones (Shanadeus, Gaborn) run rampant.
- Horrible thread discussions. Gaming has now resorted to gamefaqs list threads and industry talk more than actual intelligent game discussion, as far as "intelligent" game discussion can be.
- Staff members (Amirox) routinely troll threads where there IS legitimate game discussion just to stroke their egos, making things pretty confusing as to how you can post as there are so many double standards.
- Community has made a turn for the worse making discussion extremely poor. Mostly made of people who value their treasured opinions rather than actual discourse. This permeates both sides of GAF, gaming and O-T. Nintendo threads are just as obnoxious as movie threads.
- Site owner has even admited to doing things to said said site out of impulse and on the fly decisions.
- Rarely works.

Outside of this thread, I really have no longer have exposure to gaf.

That said, the question should be asked: what reason is there to continue posting there? The community is terrible now, the site owner does not care about the users, discourse is lacking. The sole point of posting at gaf now is to either a. troll or b. get news.

I love to shit on that place but I know why people post there. Because its a huge community with a lot of like minded people with like minded interests. I get it. Its why I was active there for so long.

Now as long as you don't rock the boat or actually question anything and stand up for your rights, or don't mention the hypocrisy or double standards and sort of stay in line which the majority of people do, then you can have a fine time there.

That sounds sarcastic and it is to a degree but it also really isn't. As long as you can turn your eye to all the bullshit and just ignore it, then its a decent place to post.

The only thing I miss about GAF is using the large community to help me solve real issues.

Like whenever I had a computer problem I would post a thread and within a short amount of time there were so many people there that they would have helped me solve my problem. I can't really do that on the bore due to the smaller community size.

I don't miss the avatars, actually.  It's unbearable to read threads past the OP and the incredibly helpful 'new info post #' additions to the title (the mod that introduced this is a saint).  Most posts are barely above youtube comments, and I mean just skimming the surface.

The few threads with good discussion are sloooow and small and flashy pictures aren't needed.  The last helpful thread I posted in was the Ys Oath one; gentlemen and ladies up in there.

Game specific threads are great. The Street Fighter/Marvel threads are a bastion of good tips, timely info and youtube links, etc. It's only when you step outside of such friendly environments  you get molested by pokeman apparel draped bottom-feeders.

And really, all the posts I see in this thread about which posters suck and how horrible they are; that doesn't even register. I know quite a few of the posters in the fighting game threads are absolute turd chuggers, but it never comes up and when I play with them it doesn't manifest itself in any meaningful way in the game, so whatevs.

That's what's great about GAF. It has a large headcount, so any game you wanna play you're probably gonna find someone willing to play with you or talk about a specific game with.

This is what I would temporarily ban people for: not being able to read and understand pretty straightforward posts. It isn't a meme response or a dumb image, but it accomplishes the same thing, continuing a trend of miscommunication. Unless you are providing some sort of high demand resource with your forum, like random porn or download links, your forum is useless if the populace can't simply read, understand and respond. It's like trying to have a serious conversation in a loud bar.
