Doctor's prerogative.  Don't like it, buy a hospital and you can set policy and staff it however you like.

If I had an hour I'd post something more substantial, but I have 30 seconds so basically it's a culture that represents guys as aggressive, women as passive and because of that and a whole load of other factors rape is more prevalent and less reported and society brushes it under the table.

haha oh wow "rape culture"

what a load

I know there is some bizzarely specific definition for it as some explanation of how rape permeates every single bit of our culture and it has "normalized" rape to the point where it's no biggie or something (which strikes me as quite weird that someone would think this) but when I look at the term and take it literally I see it as WE LIVE IN A CULTURE OF RAPE WHERE RAPE IS OKAY THEREFORE I WILL USE THIS TERM TO DISCREDIT ALL MALE SEXUALITY.  You know that girl you like that you've been spending lots of time with to get to know, hoping that you can maybe become more than a friend to her but you waited too long to make your move and now you're past the point of no return because she sees you just as a friend, or brother even?  If you say you've been friendzoned then you're basically a rapist or something or you're at least contributing to the culture of rape.  Yeah.

On the negative side, I care about politics and feel compelled to yell at stupid people on the internet - and they are, of course, legion - sucking up vast quantities of time that could be better spent doing virtually anything else.

Total political apathy may have been the better call.

Rape is not being normalized. Its a horrible act that no sane man would think of doing. Saying you raped someone in a videogame is not bad, I sometimes say I will murder my opponent in Fifa, but I don't mean actual murder or that murder is ok, just that I'd beat him/her. It really doesn't make sense to me how words are becoming a big problem when the problems themselves are what should be solved.

Considering the stats here it's pretty normalized, people just don't talk about it. They talk about how they know rape is bad but some don't even know what rape is. So many people think of some strange man popping out of the bushes who snags a woman and rapes her in an alley when the biggest amount of rape is done by an acquaintance who forces himself on another. It is quite normalized despite the idea that "rape is bad" when 1/6 women is raped and around 1/3 is sexually assaulted in her life time.

The idea that words, phrases and jokes our society uses are a means to keep rape victims silent and the act clouded in ambiguity is a thing whether people want to acknowledge it or not. Consider how it's reported in an article. So many articles go the route of victim blaming or passive language if you'd read it carefully enough. A woman or girl (or boy) "gets raped" rather than is raped by someone. Notice the erasing of the perp? Even I do it subconciously sometimes and catch myself. People don't "get raped" someone rapes them. It's not some sort of weather phenomenon like "she got stuck in the rain." And yet there are tons of things like this and other more malicious kinds of language and victim blaming that basically render victims silent and keep rapists from feeling like they did anything wrong. The onus is constantly on us to keep ourselves safe, to wear magical rape proof clothing, to trust the right guy, to defend ourselves when the time comes, to not lead men on, yet at the end of the day none of these things will necessarily prevent a friend, boyfriend or relative from cornering me, pinning me down and raping me. I've come to terms with it. It's not even paranoia. It's just a thing that if and when it occurs, as it might, since the statistics are nothing to scoff at, I'll be powerless to stop it.

When I met Timedog he could have easily raped me in the motel he was staying but at some point one has to take risks and trust men. Which is what I do but it never truly means I'm out of the woods. How many men in my friends who were victims lives were trusted associates? One never knows. Then to hear all of the bullshit rhetoric about prevention or what we women can do when the only real solution is to dismantle the culture that tacitly encourages rape when it insults victims, puts the onus on women to avoid rapists (as if we know who they are) and makes snide jokes about the whole affair it's a wonder any victims of rape come forward or live to see another day. Some of the strongest women in my life are rape victims, they have to hear insipid jokes and try to renew their sex life all the while having PTSD and yet most of them make nary a peep because then they'll be called sensitive, whiny or bitches/cunts because that's how it works.

I'll never understand the defensiveness that comes up with men or mangaf when it comes to the term Rape Culture. We've been living in it for centuries. This is where I think history really fails both genders, but especially ignores the plight women and gives us no real perspective in school just how far we've come. We just kind of act like, in US history at least, yeah women were at home and then some women wanted rights, had a convention at Seneca Falls, then got to vote in 1920, then there was some feminism in the 60s.

It's never really pounded into our heads just how deprived of autonomy women have been in most post-agriculturalist societies and how it's relatively recent that we've had the power to say "no" to sex from any man including our husband. Hell it isn't until the 90s in some places that one could even report their spouse for rape. Women's history has been nothing but state or religious sanctioned rape unless by some miracle husbands gave a shit about their wife's feelings and health. We're still fighting this entitlement today. Rape was also defined not as a woman's lack of consent but as damage to property of the closest male relative. Rape is nothing new, it's trying to rid ourselves of the old ways of viewing women as things to be possessed and the idea that their autonomy is inferior to the wants and desires of men.

It's impossible to have a nuanced discussion about these things though because so many people get hyper defensive about various terms all the while eschewing the very same ideas that keep a term like that consistent. It would be hilarious if it weren't so tragic.

The issue is that the term "rape culture" requires a lot of background information for those not already familiar with the phenomenon. I tried to touch on the potential ambiguity of recklessly using that phrase in that thread. Personally, though I agree with a lot of the conclusions of people who talk about rape culture, I think just casually using the phrase can be detrimental to making an effective social commentary depending on the audience.

The thing that needs to be understood is that the people cautioning against the phenomenon often aren't talking about things that directly condone rape. As it pertains to this discussion on video games, the regrettable conclusion being suggested is not that Hitman Absolution says that rape is okay, as it clearly makes no direct commentary about rape. However, what's suggested is that it is symptomatic of problematic behavior in society that -- when the dots are ultimately connected -- makes rape more permissible.

I think the argument might meet less resistance if "rape culture" was more cautiously used perhaps. I mean, I get why gamers might take offense to being complicit in rape.

What I think might foster better discussion is that -- ignoring rape culture completely -- we should be able to reach a conclusion that this kind of stuff at the very least is misogynistic and stupid. However, even that is meeting a fair amount of resistance. That's the part I really find baffling.

There is quite a bit of stuff in gaming that does nothing to assist the problems women still face in light of issues. I'd discuss more along the lines of objectification and sexism since a broader rape culture stroke makes some people have aneurysms however true it might be. (Since sexism and objectification are part of the larger rape culture problem.) It's not so much the fact that there is sexism and objectification as much as the frequency. I don't mind seeing sexy women but the depth of character is often lacking. And the idea that her male counterpart is armored to the hilt while she shows tits, ass, mid-drift or any combination of the three is often a source of bemusement if not outright eye rolling. There need to be more female protagonists. There needs to be more women in video games who aren't just eye candy. There needs to be better writing in general but there is definitely a lopsidedness that instead of showing heroines as people, it's tits firing guns or damsels waiting to be saved.

don't discuss real issues with children. you will enjoy life more.

I don't mind it here so much. There are just so many on GAF who's only debate tactic is "NUH UH" and "sociology is pseudoscience because you can't provide statistics for everything." As if one can't look to other countries, cultures and the past to explain various cultural priorities and perspectives.

I don't believe these bits. It's like you're back-pedalling.

I don't mind it here so much. There are just so many on GAF who's only debate tactic is "NUH UH" and "sociology is pseudoscience because you can't provide statistics for everything." As if one can't look to other countries, cultures and the past to explain various cultural priorities and perspectives.

I think I've only argued against blaming victims in a rape thread once and never again (in regards to trying to enlighten those who blame victims as to why this shouldn't happen). The argument loop is so painfully apparent that its infuriating.

Some of the strongest women in my life are rape victims, they have to hear insipid jokes and try to renew their sex life all the while having PTSD and yet most of them make nary a peep because then they'll be called sensitive, whiny or bitches/cunts because that's how it works.
this is some real talk

Cowbell has the gift of the word. It's seriously interesting the way we subconciously tag and follow other people's opinions for a brief while, and then find someone else. Unless their words stick.

This place is like one of those glowing lights that attracts flies made of words.
