Wow, that was a great post. Thanks for this.

The point I was trying to make that words are words, but I do see now how it could effect society. I still feel like its a little extreme to say that when you beat a friend in some game and you say "I just raped you" is a horrible thing to say, at the same time I understand why it can be such. I still think its more about the person themselves who commit such acts or gloss over them then using the word.

I was clueless myself until I made what I considered a flippant rape reference in regards to my wallet in front of a friend. Without anger (which I would have thought justified) she just turned to me and said matter-of-factly "Dev I was raped." I felt like utter dog shit and she explained to me that at a friend's party she was basically carted upstairs by two friends of friends and raped. I don't think I've uttered a rape joke like that ever again due to the fact that I made her recall that memory. And every time I feel the need to be flippant and make jokes like that again, I just think of the look on her face and how other victims must feel the same when they're just trying to have a pleasant time gaming, and some fuckstick comes along and screams "LOL GET RAPED BITCH" or something along those lines. It trivializes what some people go through but more importantly it's just plain torture. And the fact that some would vehemently defend their right to do so even knowing the sheer amount of victims that have to endure their talk is just cruel.

The different stigmas each victim faces? A victim of straight up violence is rarely attributed the same shame and doubt, although dependent on who did the beating and the community of course since homosexuals and minorities are not without being victimized in that manner and asked why they were somewhere or acting a certain way. At the same time violence seems demonized enough that many can separate out the wanton acts of violence in a video game from doing so in real life. A lot of the sexism and objectivity however, unless the parents are quite good at doing this, is rarely talked about in a constructive manner. It's usually just religious prudes getting a bug up their ass about the existence or sex or nudity but no real discussion of how these things influence the way young men feel about women or girls about themselves. It's not the most healthy focus and without enough exposure to the opposite gender it's hard for me not to assume it can warp some minds.

  No, but seriously: Not to kiss ass or be part of the "snitchin'" but: Good job. GAF's hard-on about piracy for games/the game industry but letting piracy of books, TV shows, music CD's, etc that aren't games. is really weird and needs to be cracked down on to be "consistent" IMO. Yeah, people are going to pirate and post streams and blah blah blah but if GAF is doing a "no piracy talk" policy, it needs to be a complete blanket instead of half-assed like it has been for years.

I have a "Know your audiences" rule when it comes to my offensive jokes or lines. And for some odd reason I said a rape joke in front of a friend who laughed her ass off over it. Later on I found out she was a rape victim so I apologized and her response was "Look you're fine you didn't know and I thought it was funny". Still felt horrible and never brought it up again. I don't think its a good idea to ever do that even though I got lucky.

This is basically how I go about it too. There are some horrendous jokes that I would only say to close friends that I know won't be hurt by them. I love listening to comedy that would be seen as offensive to most people too. But I know when to turn that part of me off. The problem in gaming is that a lot gamers don't know how to do that. They just spout off shit like its nothing to a bunch of random people in an online game.

And when someone writes an article complaining about this, they feel a need to hit back harder for some reason. What I don't get is why this is getting so much resistance on GAF of all places. Those guys love bashing every aspect of the industry, why is this such a hard pill to swallow?

It's not just a GAF thing. Much of the internet involves denigration and circle jerks against minorities and especially women. Even the trans folk on GAF get more respect than women. There is a collective of frustrated and bitter folks over on GAF who never miss a step in toeing the line and saying some sexist shit or trolling ladygaf. Even a bunch of so called married/has a gf GAF seems very insecure about their masculinity for whatever reason.

But honestly, that's the way the world is. There are bad people and there are good people. And much like how I do in the real world, on the internet I am the one who chooses who I want to interact with. In the real world if I meet some creeper guy at the bar or some misogynistic jerk I just ignore him and hang out with those who know better. On the internet, it's the same thing.

In the era of social media, there seems to be a lot of delusions about who usually populates forums (see the GAF trend where people post pictures of themselves as avatars).  Forums, IRC, usenet, etc. have always been havens for socially shunned and ignored nerds who spend their weekend nights trolling forums instead of going to parties, hangouts, clubs, etc.  A lot of said nerds are likely thought poorly of by the opposite sex ("Hey, women gave me the middle finger so here is me giving the finger right back!") and they feel resentful of it.  So anytime there is a time to take a jab at women, it's an open opportunity.  I guess laughing at women drivers makes them feel better before they realize they're a 25 year old virgin who needs to clean up his jizz-caked shirt before he heads off to work at the closing shift at Gamestop.

As for the lonely nerd socially-awkward gaming culture... it's pretty much a product of the territory. I mean, what kinds of people do companies expect to attract when setting up an environment where flawless virtual women with limitless sex appeal and submissive roles equals sales, secondary only to delusions of gamers being grandiose tough men who act out with unlimited violence without repercussion.

It's all a fantasy construct. Always was, and always will be. The only thing is nowadays with the advent of the internet and social networking and chat rooms and boards, etc, people are able to extend that fantasy further than to the confines of their own bedroom TV screen.
