I attended a few animu club meetings back in my college days, this was before the anime "boom" hit but there were still lots of weird kids. Like one kid who carried this HUGE bucket of pretzels (you know, those costco style ones) everywhere and would talk and talk and not let you get a word in... the few times I went though they showed stuff like Initial D, Lodoss War, Kite, and the Japanese version of Yu-Gi-Oh (before it was released in the states)... was pretty cool.
When I was a freshman I went to the "anime" club (was called the Japanese Culture club or something like that) and there were some pretty cool people there. The guy running it wanted to start off with a party and asked everyone to bring in some cash for it. I can't remember if I did that or not, but the party never happened and there were like one or two more meetings, then nothing

A couple of years later the club restarted, but by this point anime was in full swing in the U.S. and it was filled with annoying and/or creepy otaku-types. I went to one meeting and never went back. There was also an Atlanta-based anime club called "Anime-X." During my game store days the president came in and acted like a total stuck-up anime douchebag. Nothing creepy...just bad taste in clothes and was a snob. I stopped telling customers I watched anime after that.
Also of note is that a good 90% of all the uguuuuu otaku never made it out of the first semester or year of Japanese class.
There was a dude who was close to graduating when I got there who I think is a closet-pedo. He would start talking to me on IM about how he met a girl and was shocked that she was only 13-15, etc. or send me pictures of Japanese idols and also say "can you believe she's only 14?!?!?" when it was quite obvious. I stopped using IM after that. Years later when I joined Facebook I got a friend request from him. Every now and then he posts pictures of underage idol singers and complains that he is forever alone.
