over here you have to pay 1000+ a month on rent alone. To ride the metro all day it cost 15 dollars.

And I want to reply to Stump's post about it being a medical treatment with "I think a better question is: Is it life-threatening?" But I'm sure I'd be banned for not being sensitive to the transgender community or some horseshit like that for thinking a gender reassignment therapy isn't really worth using tax-payer money for on the prisoner.

You'd be better off arguing not having the surgery does not harm you physically, but then again a lot of tax-payer money goes to ailments of the mind as well.

A better argument would be that this is a cosmetic surgery, and therefore not as important as a broken tooth or bones. But if that's your argument there are a whole lot of other cosmetic surgeries and procedures convicts get every day and no one complains about them (like composite resin fillings)

However this is all bullshit. You should be able to say you dont want your money to go towards trans surgery for prisoners without having to construct a near perfect argument.

I'd wonder if the thread would be different if the doctors had ruled the surgery was not necessary. A lot of the support for the judge's decision in that thread, including mine, is basically based on the doctors arguing withholding treatment is cruel and unusual punishment

I fill in the why in the deconstruction of how i get to conclusions, if that satisfies someone or not I cant control. I don't like the idea of having to pre-construct an argument to validate ones own opinion, again the value for me is seeing how the person reached that conclusion and not necessarily the conclusion itself. 

I don't think this is a less serious way of having a back and forth with someone, my focus is just different.

If our conclusions remain the same I don't argue the points anymore I investigate *why* we formed different opinions based on the same data sources, that is how I learn about people.

Eh, it's just that the issue is intertwined with an issue that some are very passionate about. Further, there's always going to be a divide about the level of care the state should be obligated to provide for inmates.

What? I've long held the view that the internet should allow people to express their views, and on a moderated forum if you are being respectful you should be able to hold controversial views as long as you follow rules. Calling trans women dudes or talking about traps...yea, that shouldn't be allowed. But if someone says they don't think trans women are biological women, or don't support gay marriage, or don't support interracial marriage....that's their opinion. Basically, my mantra for heavily moderated forums and social media is "say what you believe, but don't be mean about it"

I don't know if you'd be banned, but stump is very good at arguing, and the worse your argument is, the more stupid he'll make you look.  With the reply you want to make, the obvious follow-up is: there are a lot of things that aren't life-threatening for which medical treatment is provided  , so if you want to dq it on those grounds, you have to start looking at things like broken bones, dental cavities, chronic pain, torn or strained ligaments, damaged joints, torn muscles, and a whole variety of other non-life threatening issues that are treated without much in the way of questions or complaint.

Not taking a side here, but if you're going to go up against someone like stump in a debate, you'd better have responses ready for at least all of the obvious replies to your statements.

Oh, I know. I'm just worried my opinion of the situation would offend the transgender PC police/outrage squad because I think it's a minor non-life-threatening condition. Maybe if the dude (er-"dudette?") didn't kill his (er-"her?") wife, he (er-"she?") would have the money to do the operation. But they got jailed and killed their significant other. Tough shit, you don't have the money for this operation, really.

Also I could see the counter-argument of "well what about blah blah blah..." and yeah, I'd agree those aren't serious either. Fillings? Yeah, those should be covered because well taking care of your teeth is important. But cosmetic surgery stuff besides that that is only changing appearances? Not too high on the important-need-to-get scale.

Anyway, I'm not gonna argue about it here. I just wish the mods would come out and say "you won't get banned for having an opinion that may not be the majority opinion" because there's times on GAF where someone can say something unpopular but it's their opinion and then within the hour get banned because it isn't the majority opinion. Of course, maybe it's just the way they said it or what not but there's times where I'm never sure if posting my opinion on something there is going to be kosher to the mods or not. That thread just smelled "honeypot ban trap" to me.
