The Fighting Game Tournament videos thread!
« on: January 18, 2011, 10:02:04 PM »
I don't know about you guys, but I like watching announced matches of fighting games a lot.  It's the closest thing I'll come to watching and enjoying sports.  Post some fucking matches!

Might as well start with this insane shit from the past weekend:

$15k money match for MVC2.

Fighting games are the only sport worth watching.

This one's fairly recent. The ending is legendary:

I love how hype Japanese announcers can get:

Patented Daigo:

Vintage Marn:

So many great matches.

This one deserves its own post:

One of the best matches ever played in SF4, and probably Alex Valle's best match in nearly a decade.

Any VF5 vids?  It always surprises me how good people can get at a game that complex.

I'd love to get to that level but it's impossible unless VF5 is all I ever play in my free time.

that Daigo/Valle vid is fucking nuts, watched it last night.  There are lots of great matches from Socal Regionals!  I can't post em right now, homework time...

I don't really keep up with VF any more, so I'm not familiar with the current crop of top players and great matches, but here are the SBO 2010 finals:

There's some pretty good matches in there with a nice variety of characters. Every time I watch VF I just wish I could play it. :'(

Weak finish to that Money match... but the matches up to it had some nice moments.

So many terrible announcers/commentators in the fighting game community.  Please stop whooping and hollaring into the mic.  My guess is they often just decide whoever supplies the equipment/feed gets to do it, regardless of whether or not they're any good at it.

While not a great voice for commentary, I do love J.Wong's criticisms of the match-ups.  Always has some insightful things to say and is such a cocky bastard, but he's earned it, no doubt.

James Chen, Ultra David, and Seth Killian are the few announcers I can stand.

There are some good commentators out there. My favorites:

Seth Killian
James Chen
Juicebox Abel
Ultra David
Ski Sonic
Yipes
Chris Hu
Adam Sessler

Seth Killian is by far the best. James Chen and Ski Sonic are a pretty good duo imo. Juicebox brings the insight and autism. Ultra David is a good play-by-play commentator while Yipes and Chris Hu are good for some color commentary once in a while.

Everyone else kinda sucks.

James Chen is a robot, I swear.  His commentary is awesome and he pretty much doesn't stop the entire tourney.  Ski Sonic was great at the midwest tourney.  Yipes is always fun as hell too.

I really hope they don't have to use Sessler for the Evo finals again.  That was the worst thing ever...I felt like Sessler was probably forced into that by G4, so fuck G4.

Arcade Infinity:

They've been doing lots of KoF13 and BlazBlue CS. Their commentary isn't that great but they've got pretty good videos.

God damn KoF13 looks amazing. I need dat port ASAP

Spooky is also great.

Sessler was put in the bad spot.  He was probably assigned to the gig by G4 for channel recognition, but he obviously didn't have any experience with fighting games at a high level.  I felt kinda bad for him.  Seth's been commenting for years and it shows.

both sets of Valle and Filipino Champ were good, valle vs. ricky ortiz was good, xsk_samurai vs. john choi was really awesome.   The top 8 singles vid was better than the 5 v. 5 v. 5.  but both are worth watching because people are ridiculous at ssfiv at this point.

Pretty good tourney.  Not as good as WCW or Crossroads though, since everyone is just learning AE.

Yun/Yang divekick spam is not that much fun to watch, but I really liked the finals between Wong and Marn.  There was something perfect about those two in the grand finals using Yun and Yang.  otherwise, the most memorable moments were JWong's double perfect on Jayce (and Jayce's respectable, but not game-winning comeback) and Tatsu's almost-comeback on JWong.  Nothing too special.

the best part was James Chen vs. ultradavid.  commentator battle!  Ultradavid raped Chen's Cammy with...Dan.  And Chen cried for about the next hour about it, saying Cammy is hopelessly nerfed and all that.  dude goes through all 5 stages of grief over it :lol

I was watching that last night, but I missed the finals. Gotta catch up on those once they're archived. Drunk Marn should have replaced Chen on commentary once Chen's saltiness got out of control.

Yun and Yang look ridiculous though. I think I might switch over to Yun once the AE DLC comes out. Genei Jin combos are too fun.

do you think the damage scaling on those genei jin combos might get toned back a bit in the next revision?   I was pretty wasted when I was watching, but I seem to remember some 50%+ combos that came out of nowhere.  On the other hand, maybe those juggles are way harder than they look.

I think the mega damage from the Genei Jin combos are fine (since it's a super), but what they really need to tone down is how fast he can build meter. You can just sit on the other side of the screen doing empty palm strikes to build lots of meter quickly. It's like you're really playing Third Strike!

Well Ono wanted his god tier characters.  Such BS.  I'm so upset at the Yun/Yang balancing or lack thereof.  Plus, they're so boring to watch.  Hated since them 3S.

LOL, so they nerfed Cammy being able to build meter from the TKCS, but with Yun it's cool?

The best part is he builds meter like twice as fast as Cammy's TKCS. He gets like 1/4 of a bar each time. :dur
