Thread is old but the game's still not released, and rumors are it won't ever in the States.

Demo is out on Japan PSN/XBLA.  Full English.

Multiplayer is so much fun.  Single player seems cool too.  But multiplayer is so much fun!  I can't think of another multiplayer game to compare it to...maybe Spawn on Dreamcast or something.

And it's a big demo.  There are about six characters to choose from (three from Madworld).

And random events happen in the matches.  Like a crashing plane, missile strikes, bosses appearing, random scrub military troops, zombies, bosses, etc.  In one of the matches there was a cutscene where a random enemy pulls a level and changed the level layout.  Levels are big.  I dive bombed some dude from twenty stories up.

Seems to.  It has cutscenes (I skipped them) and two campaigns: Light and Dark.

The Dark/Jack part in the demo is just a fight again Baron.

The Light/Leo part is a brawler like Streets of Rage.  Missions appear on the map, you run over and hit select to start them.  The side mission in the demo was a standard trial thing, kill 50 dudes in under 5 minutes, and the main mission is a boss fight.  There are perks and I think you level up to unlock them.

Looking forward to trying the demo today!

Is it though?  The game seems to have full English already and they may just be waiting to announce its release date at E3.

It also seems like the "clueless or uncaring about overseas" attitude prevalent in Japan that they could launch the JP demo, and not care or realize that it would steal thunder from the E3 announcement. Sega.

I mean, c'mon... Sega.

Seems pretty confirmed at this point that western releases are not happening unless they release it download only.  There will be no disc release in the west.

The idea I guess is that even though it's fully localized in English already, it will sell so few copies, the cost of simply printing the discs & boxes and manuals will be more than any profit they receive from sales.  Plus X360s minimum 50,000 print run.

Minimum is less than 50K actually, last time I checked. But it's still way above how much this game would sell on the console at retail in the US.

As for the game itself, it's  finished, localized, and ready to go for the English-speaking world. It's just that SEGA gets to make the final decision as to when it is released. Wouldn't be surprised at all if they held it off to explore other venues such as DD like how VF5 is going to be.

I've played everything the demo offers now, and I just cannot over HOW GOOD THIS GAME IS.

You get three parts of the game to try:

Campaign (Black): You play as Jack, the main character from Madworld on Wii and fight a boss battle.  Has some story.

Campaign (White): You play as Leo (who looks a bit like Raiden from MGS and the main character from the shitty game Nanobreaker combined) and run around a portion of a level.  This is free-roaming and there's an endless supply of enemy characters to beat up.  Mission starts points are in various areas around the stage.  I found three; not sure if there's any others.  The last mission is another boss battle.

Multiplayer: This is online (or you can just play offline with bots) and is restricted to team deathmatch, with four players on each side.  And this is where the game is NUTS.  You run around a a ruined city and try to kill as many of the enemy team as possible.  Items to use (like tires and street signs, just like in Madworld), health, and weapons are scattered around.  There's also stage hazards that can occur.  So far I have seen bombers fly by and carpet-bomb the shit out of everything, poison gas that fills up the lower levels of the map (drains your health; you have to run to higher ground), Cthulu (not the Lovecraft monster, but instead a HUGE mech that annihilates everything in its path), runaway vehicles crashing and exploding, and an NPC pulling a level, which detonates a ton of bombs and causes the buildings in the stage to collapse, altering the map!

Controls are tight and allow you to do light and hard attacks, lock onto enemy targets, dodge, block/counter, use a character-specific weapon (which has its own meter; it drains with use and fills up automatically when you stop using it), and like in the campaign, you find weapons and various items to use.  You can also grapple characters who are both standing and already-downed for additional damage.

I think this is the best 3D beat-em-up (done in the more traditional Final Fight or Streets Of Rage vein) that I ever played.  Platinum just nailed it and the multiplayer being good is just the icing on the cake.

Note that you will need to check the options (all in Japanese) to change the language.  You can switch everything, except for the options menu itself, to English.

If not, we can import for PS3 and hope that the 360 version is also region-free.  I would expect the 360 version to be a wasteland online if it's Japan-only, however.

Unless something gets announced at E3, I'm not waiting to see either- I've been playing the shit out of the demo and want the game ASAP!

the demo is absolute boring shite - is the final game an improvement or something?

i've yet to play a Platinum game that wasn't painfully ordinary - is this or P-100 (also looks like standard meh fare) about to break this run of complete overrated boredom?

Will wait until it's bargain binned to 1000 yen (aka next thursday)

I think there's a bit of a jizz loving about Platinum amongst fans - i think if we had some blind taste testing a lot of people would be "But this is bog standard fare!"

but hey - that's haters conjecture - i stand by my opinion : i've yet to be blown away by a platinum game. I appreciate what they are -trying- to do but for Max Anarchy? I simply don't -fucking- get it.

Vanquish is my favorite platinum game even though Bayonetta has more content.  The core combat is just incredibly tight to a level not seen in any other shooter.

I wish there was like a Vanquish Director's Cut on PC that had all the extra content that Bayonetta has that really fleshes it out as a big meaty game.  The challenge rooms are nice, but it's just not enough and new game+ would have been cool.

Vanquish is quite possibly my favorite game this gen. It's really one of the best and the gameplay is just right. I find it hard to really play other TPS. I really would like another game like it.

Anyway, Sega continues to make no sense. This game is going to bomb, might as well get it out now. Maybe launch at a lower price. While this pretty much saves me money now, I was still looking forward to it. The demo was pretty good.

Got the game!

Every copy of the first print-run has Bayonetta...the code is on the reverse side of the box cover.

Also:

Quote
For importers

http://maxanarchy.jp/bar/

When you get 500 points in a bar you get a code for free DLC via the store on July 18th

You get points by:
- Opening each update (10 points/update)
- Posting four things in the bottom right box of each update (20 points/update)
- Scrolling through updates and voting on every possible speech bubble (20 points/update)
- Playing the mini-games (max of 30 points for each guess the character game, 50 points for the Big Bull space launcher one)

The DLC is 2 extra modes. Dogfight which appears to be a helicopter battle, and Mad Survival which appears to be the survival horde mode with player character opponents.(Not clear if it's still PvE or becomes a PvP mode)

Time consuming, but could be worth grinding out for the free modes

The DLC is redeemable BY the 18th, so if you're getting the Japanese version, do that crap now.

Played the first stage of the Black Side story mode, where you're Jack.  Similar to the demo, the campaign mode throws you into a large, open level filled with never-ending hordes of baddies to kill.  These guys range from various grunts with different weapons, to mutant monsters, to living bio-weapons and are all shapes and sizes.  Killing them gets you points, and every 100,000 or so unlocks new missions.  The missions take place on the same stage and will have you beating waves of enemies, fighting bosses, escorting a helpless NPC , and picking up a sniper rifle and shooting tons of drones and helicopters down all over the place.

The single player does rank you, but the real meat of the game is all of its multiplayer modes, which I have only been able to play a bit of- we're at a cabin in North Bumblefuck, GA and the connection ain't that great.  I did get to play survival mode (you and up to two others against waves of enemies) and found it pretty intense- after a few easy waves, we fought Bayonetta and several HUGE monsters (with the Bayonetta theme playing!), then some mechs with the MASSIVE Cthulu running around the arena, killing fucking everything.   :lol

Game is awesome- simple to play and get a grasp of and packed with content.  Not the greatest visuals though.  It's 720P and looks a little muddy/blurry.

I completely forgot about this game, just ordered a copy of the 360 version. Hope it still has the Bayonetta code... I doubt they'll need to make more than 1 shipment for the 360 anyway.

You'll get the code....no way the whole first shipment is going to sell out that quick.

The mechanics aren't that deep.  You have light and hard attack buttons, plus a modifier with L2 (uses weapons/abilities).  So it's just basic LLLH, LLLL, HHH, etc. style combos, plus the usual array of jump attacks, a 360 spin (can be used for countering), a grab attack (in front of or behind), running attacks, and the use of various power-ups and weapons you can pick up.  I've gotten off some air combos too.  You can even take out the CPU unit on a helicopter, then jump up and grab and it fly around shooting missiles all over the place!   :lol

I mean it when I say that this game has a classic arcade beat-em-up feel to it.  The controls are tight and responsive and the game is easy to pick up and get right into.

All the characters differ based on strength, speed, and the types of abilities that they have.

OK will download and check it out. I better not be disappointed, I have probably played more Spikeout than any other white person

The demo doesn't offer the survival mode, BTW- just a sample of the story mode, plus deathmatch and team deathmatch online or offline against the CPU.

If you want the best feel for the basics, do the tutorial then the story mode white side with Leon.  It offers two missions and limits the enemy types just a few of the ones in the retail game, but it definitely should give you a good idea of how everything is set up.  Black side in the demo is just an easy boss fight.  Oh, and one thing not in the demo are the bigger, nastier CPU enemies you fight.  Some of them have to be killed with MK-style finishers (thankfully done with just one button) or they get back up again!

The demo is really cool, but with the Yen being uber-strong right now and a budget release in 10 months (HOLY WTF SEGA) here, I can't justify dropping ~$100 on it.

Understandable...I only sprung for it because I fucking LOVED the demo and played the shit out of it.

If the game wasn't coming to NA, I'd import it, but since it is, I'll stick with my Macross and Eureka Seven AO PS3 imports.

Did more survival/mad survival with two U.S. players...one dude was already level 50 and kept stealing all my kills so he'd get the high score.   >:(  He seemed to be doing this with his buddy, who dropped out and then I got all the higher scores...then he turned his mic off.   :lol

About to hit level 19 and have all but two characters unlocked now.

this looks awesome... is it similar to God Hand?

Just scroll up and watch the videos.    :lol

I finally played the demo.  Game is pretty cool.  Played as the White Side cyborg guy.  Definitely can see the Spikeout resemblance.

Will definitely pick it up domestically.

Bayonetta is a playable character via DLC. You get the code by preordering at Gamestop.

Yeah.  If you order from Amazon or other stores, you don't get Bayonetta as a character or the two additional game modes.

I think Bayonetta was a preorder bonus in Japan and Europe too, but not a retailer exclusive.
