anyone know any good ways to delete a corrupted folder?
« on: February 03, 2011, 06:54:03 PM »
a couple weeks ago i open up my itunes only to discover that its fucked and wont work.  well more specifically quicktime was fuckked and itunes was not happy about that.  "easy," i think to myself "i'll just delete them and reinstall."  well itunes went down the toilet just fine, but quicktime would make it about 90% through uninstallation before giving up and giving me some 2003 error that apparently plenty of people have had but nobody knows just how to fix it.  i searched my quicktime folder and manually deleted everything except one corrupt folder that just would not die.  scouring the net for solutions has only led me to millions of worthless programs that falsely claim to be able to erase my shit.  its been too long since ive been on itunes and im fuckking pissed that this is so complicated.

any help would really be appreciated.

Try booting up in Safe Mode and then deleting it.

worst scenario:

back up everything to another drive, reformat problematic drive then copy over everything.

Acronis is a good tool for this.  You might not even have to reinstall Windows if you do it right.

Which version of Windows?

Anyway, first: reboot if you haven't already. Close your browsers and mediaplayers, if there are any.
Then try Scandisk. There's probably an error on your disk or file system, so check if that applies.
Next thing, try to boot in safe mode and delete from there. Also make sure it's not shared, although that really shouldn't be an issue.
If it still doesn't work: Check your permissions. There might be some crazy-ass ACL preventing you from accessing that directory.
Windows->run...->type in cmd and press enter. Type in del, hit space, and drag the offending folder onto the command line. This should insert the folders name. Close the explorer window that you dragged the folder from and any other that displays it, then hit enter on the command line.

Also try this:
Open Explorer -> Go to the 'Tools' menu -> Select 'Folder options' -> Select the 'View' tab -> uncheck 'Show preview handlers in preview plane' if it's there
then reboot and try again. It just may work. Doubt it, but you never know.

Now we're getting into really uncomfortable territory: Go and scan the everloving fuck out of your machine. Online scanners are aplenty nowadays. You may give this, this and this a go too if you want, to check if there are any suspicious hidden folders on your machine and generally check things out.

You may also want to consult a SMART monitor to check the health of your drive. Maybe it's breaking down?

I don't get why (still) anything Apple puts on Windows is such a POS. I understand when they were the underdog, thinking their OS was superior and thus treating anything they put on Windows as a red-headed stepchild - but what portion of their bread and butter product userbase uses Windows? Constant complications with their programs seem antithetical to their goals of everything being easy-peasy for the masses.

I f'n hate iTunes, I don't understand how anyone can ever believe it's a competent music management program.
