Help me pimp my pad...
« on: February 07, 2011, 08:15:47 PM »
I'm trying to convert my outdated man-cave into something more socially dynamic and pleasant for guests.

Right now, I have old furniture, a piece of shit T.V. that senior citizens would be ashamed of owning, and appliances that scream minimalist lifestyle. Doesn't help that I have games, movies, and free fitness magazines all sprawled randomly on the floor.

I'm prepared to start from scratch...starting this week.

Where do you folks shop for good furniture, and what sort of style do you go for? Are there any appliances or household items you currently own which help to enhance the vibe of your place for guests? If so, where do you get them from?

I would also appreciate such insights, seeing as how I am shortly going to have a new pad myself.

-sell off/throw away all the games movies etc you dont need

-create a color scheme that you want to go with - stick with more neutral colors, please

-find some nice-looking furniture online that you think would look good together and will fit in your apt/house

-go to a store that has similar-looking shit on clearance and buy that instead

-keep it clean and make sure your new place always smells nice

congratulations!  you now have a place that women and family will not be afraid to enter

How would a room be socially dynamic? I want to know.

Quote
Social dynamics is a mathematically inspired approach to analyse societies, building upon systems theory and sociology. Sociologists, ethnologists, economists, social psychologists, criminologists, anthropologists and biologists are utilizing it in their studies of systems and behavior.

Sounds future

The most important things if you want to redecorate to make you place to attract more guests or whatever are a comfy sofa and a big ass tv, real talk.

Ikea furniture is overpriced and has no long term value.  Put the money into a 50" or larger high quality TV which is more likely to impress.

Should I start with the living room and work my way to the bedroom?

I'm not messing with IKEA again. I used to buy all my shit from there as an undergrad and I don't think I purchased one single item that didn't start to break down after 6 months.

I was looking at a 4-piece living room set. Is there a price cap I should refrain from exceeding? Would it be cheaper to buy furniture in sets or in pieces? Big screen TV will have to wait for now.

Some living room sets I've been looking at:

Can I get items like these cheaper elsewhere?

My recently remodeled basement is devoid of anything nerdy in plan view. All the games are either under the stairs in my very own nerd closet, or hidden away in the entertainment console. Looks much better that way.

We bought our furniture from Macy's, Pottery Barn, West Elm, and Crate and Barrel.

yet another reason why arguments about box art for unreleased games are so ridiculous. No-one in their right mind is going to ever display that shit in their homes (sorry Bebpo)

Furniture will not make people want to hang out with you.

If they get that far...they're already hanging out with you.

I have a set similar to the first link. The price is about what I paid. Leather is a great investment. It's the toughest furniture material that is also the easiest to clean.
My set has gone through a year long 3 kids and a dog torture test and looks the exact same as the day it was delivered. Not a single scratch.

ZeroHero - we have a leather sofa that my kid and her friends have just about destroyed. They keep putting stickers and such on it. Removing them sometimes takes off a bit of the leather as well. Repeat that a few hundred times and it looks like a dog undergoing chemo. Otherwise I agree about being easy to clean.

do you have any furniture discount stores by you?  we have places like Weekends Only that have nice name-brand furniture at discounted prices.  if you CAN get furniture from a place like that, DO IT.  more money for a big t.v.

My wife loves my mancave and actively pushes or buys me stuff for it.  The less embarrassing parts of it seep into the living room too (certain movie posters)

Good advice.

I'll add:

Frame all artwork and posters.  This ain't college anymore.

Hire a housekeeper once a month if you can afford it.

Man, I don't know shit about plants. I'm not going to be some Billy Rosewood from Beverly Hills Cop, methodically and lovingly spraying shit on random plant life after a hard day's work.

Just purchased that set for $999 (40% off) from Marlo Furniture. Thought it was a good deal, so I grabbed it right away.

Now all I need is a new bed and a new television set, then I'll have all the essentials covered.

Anyone have any TV suggestions? I've been looking at Sony Bravias, but I'm not "in the loop" with regard to today's popular and reliable television sets. Looking for a 55+ inch.

I've got a Bravia, but it's only 46". I think it's absolutely brilliant.

I have a Bravia too (again, smaller than that), and it's bitchin'. Could've spent less, but I don't regret it at all. Also, the upscaler in my TV is better than whatever nonsense they have in the 360/PS3... I think how SD stuff looks is worth considering as well.
