New inFAMOUS 2 deets and media

I think most of us at Sucker Punch have noticed the days starting to blur together a bit. So while I had a quiet moment here on Southwest Flight 651, I thought I’d put the time to good use and give you an update on our progress with I2 (inFAMOUS 2) … Ken’s post from last week got the ball rolling, let’s see if I can spill some more beans on the Karma system…

When we took a look at the Karma system in I1 (inFAMOUS, the first game) we wanted to keep the successful stuff, but also make improvements … As a top line, we knew we wanted to continue to offer players the choice and responsibility that comes along with having powers. This is one of the central themes of many archetype super-hero stories, as well as an interesting exploration of the relationship between power, responsibility and the test of character that powers bring. So, that had to stay.

But on the flip side, we got feedback from fans that some of the choices felt too mechanical, and they wanted their choices to have more meaning in the narrative and in the world. So, our challenge with I2 was to make these choices more real, more believable, and yet still keep them visible and clear to the players.

When we spent time thinking and designing the improved Karma system, we ultimately concluded that there was a way to make these choices both clearer and much more believable: to make your Karma decisions more about relationships and less about the specific choice at hand. So instead of a question that really didn’t relate to our primary gameplay (e.g. “should we take this food or give it away?”), in I2 we let the player decide who to ally with on a quest, or choose between Kuo’s surgical strike or Nix’s no-holds barred assault. You aren’t just choosing a mission, you’re choosing an ally and alienating another person. This was both clear for players, and more real.

Here are a couple videos which demonstrate what I’m talking about, but let me set them up a bit … At this point in the game, Kuo has been captured by the local Militia that’s taken over New Marais. We find out that Kuo is being held at a makeshift prison (a converted old mansion on the edge of town). Cole needs to mount a rescue, but the fortified target rules out a frontal assault.
Cole’s buddy Zeke proposes a rescue plan. He has seen a convoy of captured police officers being paraded through the city. He wants to bust up the convoy, free the officers, and then lead the police on an assault of the old mansion/militia stronghold. Turns out other cops are being kept there as prisoners, if Cole helps bust them free he’ll get Kuo out at the same time … of course that also means there’ll be more cops on the street (which is sometimes uncool for vigilantes). Cops love us, Kuo goes free, all is good! Okay, let’s have a look:

http://www.viddler.com/explore/sceablog/videos/1600/ (left-click the link for video)

Nix’s idea? Well as you know from Ken’s piece, Nix is more of a chaotic personality. Her plan? Load up a streetcar with explosives and run it down the tracks at full speed towards the mansion. It’ll derail, crash through the front gate and explode in a huge fireball … Great diversion, and tons of collateral damage on the Militia, even if a few prisoners might become collateral damage. After the explosion, we team up and slog our way through the remaining resistance and get Kuo back. Nix, of course, has some super powers of her own, and they are particularly useful in combination with Cole’s arsenal. Just another bit part of the plan! Let’s take a quick look:

http://www.viddler.com/explore/sceablog/videos/1599/ (left-click the link for video)

So in the case of these two choices, you end up rescuing Kuo along either path, but that won’t always be the case. Sometimes the implications of your choices will be clear (like above) and sometimes they will be murky. The choices you make will affect the world itself, the citizens’ reaction to you, and of course the ending of the game in an important way. What we hope is that you all find them entertaining, occasionally thought provoking, and lots of fun.

Before I go, I want to wrap up with a few more answers to questions we received after Ken’s post. #1. YES, a lot of content is backing up the Karma system, not just different cut scenes – in fact the example above is all gameplay, There are NO differences in the cut scenes. And saving Kuo is just the beginning— there are going to be a very sizable number of missions set up in choices like this, and plenty of unique content on either side. #2. YES, the game should be more balanced for those of you who want to play more “Neutral” or switch sides.

So there you go, I’m about to land and the flight attendants are eyeballing me. We’ll have more on the Karma system later this month on Spike’s GTTV which airs on Feb. 24th. Until then, choose your friends carefully!

(Image removed from quote.)

And of course this won't be be a Sony exclusive without a batch of gifs.

What happened to the other character design? I liked it more.

Yeah, I personally had no problems with the other design, he gave the same douchey vibe but was hotter. Enough people bitched however and they changed it to this: a mix between Cole of the first game and the now scrapped Cole design.

I finally got to play some Infamous this week and liked it quite a bit.  The hero's origin was well done and really made me feel like I was inside a comic book.  Too bad the rest of the story didn't follow the strong start, although the cut scenes are still fun to watch.

In terms of gameplay, Infamous was fun and had great controls, which is still rare for the sandbox genre.  My only peeve so far, is that the covering mechanics seem ripped from Gears and feel misplaced in a superhero game.  I think a better alternative would have been to let you start off with some kinda energy shield.  Ducking behind a wall like a wimp just doesn't feel right for a superhero.

Nah, they did it so awesome that it worked. Slinging one leg up on the cover kicks ass. And shields suck balls, I don't think I ever used the one you get in the game.

See, that sounds more like Uncharted than superhero.  If not shields, then at least let him dodge them at lightning speed.

It's superhero of the Spiderman sort, I guess. At the beginning of the game, he's really not very powerful, but you use cover a hell of a lot less further in. Once you get the real badass powers, it's not as critical. And then you can use a shield.

How long is the first to beat?  I don't need to go nuts on maximizing everything, just enough to finish the main story.  Infamous is moving up my list since Demon's Souls is going to take me at least a year to beat.

It's not all that long, unless you're going after the collectibles (which speed up development). Some of the collectibles tell quite a bit of story, so it may or may not be worth it.

Looks great.  Infamous is still my favorite PS3 game.

But that, uh, black/red/maroon lady's design is ghastly.  I think they found her design in the "Ugly, but offensive enough" waste bin outside of the Prototype offices.

Don't mind Cole's design seeing as how alternate skins are in the game, and even without them, whatever.  I'll be staring at the back of his head the entire time - Zeke (excerpt from my fan fiction).  That was shown when Amazon accidentally put the Collector's Edition up before they were supposed to.  It also said the release date is May 24th.  It comes out the same day as LA Noire, I think.

I thought the collectibles were some of the best parts of the story. Probably because they didn't include characters that everyone hated.

Release date is June 7th

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/02/18/infamous-2-countdown-begins-release-date-pre-orders-hero-edition-announced/

Preorder bonuses depending on where you buy it, or the hero edition (I think it's $100) includes them all plus other stuff.  The special edition has an infamous 1 cole skin and a kessler one.  yeah, there is definitely going to be an old new cole skin in there.

Not sure if old:

http://www.gametrailers.com/video/trolley-gameplay-infamous-2/710783

http://www.gametrailers.com/video/convoy-rescue-infamous-2/710785

I like that they're putting more emphasis on melee, but I foresee these stylized slow-motion finishers becoming an annoyance that deters player from relying on melee in the first place.

Wow, I hadn't seen any gameplay videos and the graphics look really nice.  The part at the start where he's jumping from house to house looks really cool :o

User levels are hmm, I would say you can't do much if you can't actually change the environment, but then again missions in Sandbox games tend to be "let's take our environment and try to make missions around it", so theoretically users could do that too.  Plus the bit with platforming makes it seem like you actually will be able to mess with the environment which is cool.

Guess Shadows of the Damned will have to wait while I play this.

Bonerriffic.

Yeah, there's no way there's going to be any permanent terrain changes, but it looks like you can set up temporary barriers for Defense missions, so you probably get tools for the other mission types as well.

It's tiny, but I really liked in Vice City Stories that you could set up your empire with any type of building in each location. Driving through VC and thinking "I put that there" was really fun.

Someone posted that in the gaf thread.  Gives an idea of the types of platforming levels that can be made in the creator.

Before PSN went down, a platforming level I played was a lot more difficult.  All that auto platforming stuff was turned off so you really needed to land perfectly.

I don't understand why they still haven't given Cole an upward jump when he's climbing poles and ladders. I can't think of any game that features scaling, even in the most basic form, that doesn't have one. I've been begging for this since they released the demo of inFamous 1.

The only other concern I have is that slow-mo melee sequences interrupting the fast paced action might get annoying at some point.

Other than that? the game looks bloody good, a major improvement, Uncharted 1 to 2 sort of improvement, yadda yadda yadda.

yeah, it's odd but Infamous 2 gives you abilities that to speed up vertical traversal.  Some are more spoiler-y than others.  Others are metal objects in the world, including any car, acting as a launch pad to fling yourself in the air.  If you time it right, you can stand on a car, lift it up, and then jump off at that point to get extra height.  You can pretty much latch onto the power lines with that alone.

For the more spoiler-y abilities
spoiler (click to show/hide)
the beta has an electric pad you toss on the ground.  If you press jump over it, you get launched in the air.

For the decision in the game (ice or fire powers) you acquire a vertical or horizontal traversal mechanic.  The ice one creates a glacier under your feet to launch you really high and the flame one is a forward air dash.
