So what are the ups and downs of a Windows Phone 7?
« on: February 14, 2011, 11:10:30 AM »
Started to get sick of my Curve so I checked what phones are available to my company and the Samsung Focus is on there. I would have preferred to get an Android but they're all shitty. I actually really wanted a nexus one. So it was a WP7 or and Iphone 4, and I just don't want an Iphone.

Watched the Cnet review and they gave it a pretty good score.

I played with a focus on Friday and thin it's pretty cool. My only issue is that it's so geared around social networks that I wouldn't ever use half the functionality. I don't know how customizable it is.
If you do get one, I want to know how Outlook works on it compared to the Curve.

The iPhone 4 is a fantastic device despite the senseless apple shackles.

Downs: No c&p, no third party multitasking, no flash, somewhat buggy (marketplace crashes for me sometimes, heard issues about the alarm clock but haven't experienced anything regarding that), camera doesn't save settings

Ups: Marketplace is growing fast as hell, slick and fast as hell, pretty customizable, xbox live integrated, good looking games, live tiles are awesome, zune pass is fantastic, facebook is hella integrated if you're into it and copy and paste, third party multitasking and flash are supposed to be in this year.

It's a nice middleground between iphone and android.  I have the htc hd7 and it's the best phone I've ever had.  It's a really polished, yet pretty customizable os.  browsing on it is also so fucking comfortable.  webpages render correctly and it's smooth to zoom in and out.  also, the touch keyboard is so fucking good and precise.

alarm works great for me, not sure what the issues are supposed to be.

But basically, if you want something that works great for the basic functions (contacts, music, email, note taking (for me anyway), pictures), it's pretty slick. If you want something with a ton of features and third-party apps (actually there are a lot of these, but they all seem to be pretty janky), you should maybe look elsewhere (or wait a year).

there's supposedly a bug that causes the alarm to go off, but not make a sound.  and after it does, nothing else makes a sound on the phone either.  i've not encountered it though.  *shrug*

i like all the apps i've found so far and there's a decent balance between free and pay apps.  games seem fairly expensive.  at least compared to my experience with android.  never had an iphone so i can't comment on their prices.

from googling around, apparently some people's phones were freezing up after hitting snooze a few times? weird. but I am not lazy enough to be vulnerable to this apparent bug   :mrt

Focus is my first smartphone and so far it has been wonderful.

Biggest downside is that the OS isn't complete yet. Need major updates so it can catch up to IOS and Android (updates like socket support, localization, flash support among many others) but like recursive-san said, it is sufficient for basic stuff.

Did you get a 4?

Yep.

Cause my boss didn't think there would be any demand in our organization for Windows phones.

I don't have an iphone but have you thought about jailbreaking it? Might make it better for your specific needs.

Holy fuck there are things that bother me about this phone.

*Get a text, click close, its no longer shown as a new message. Until I go in to messages and read it, it should still show up as a notification.

*Custom ringtones = yes. Custom sms tone = NO? HUH?

*Can't always use horizontal keyboard

Its all really stupid shit that would help usability, but I guess Apple just ain't that smart.

Yeah, jailbreak and install BiteSMS, it'll solve the first two problems.

As for the third, it sadly depends on the app, it's not a system wide feature.

Wtf? I had no idea it's possible for greenpois0n's loader app to be missing Cydia. It basically loads it from a source, are you sure your iPhone is connected to the internet?

Re: redsn0w

It's been a while since I used it, but I remember it offering lots of options. If there's  way to only install Cydia, go with that. Try to avoid jailbreaking an already jailbroken phone.
