just set up my GOG account and bought the first Gabriel Knight (haven't played them before), since the recent Gemini Rue reignited my interest in retro adventure games

All three Gabriel Knight games are great, and they all three have different styles (1 = 2D, 2 = FMV + Digitized 2D, 3 = 3D).

Jamestown is a really fun shooter, by the way. Not too hard for a shooter and it looks/sounds great. The only real gripe is that there's no online multi, but local multi is great fun if you can get some people together.

Just bought Jamestown. I've only played for like 30 minutes, but it's a pretty fun game. It seems very novice friendly as well, so I'd definitely recommend giving it a shot.

The fifth level is insane though. My brother and I tried to beat it five or six times, but couldn't even make it to the boss. :lol

Yeah, I just played stage 5. Most of the time I don't like it when shooters make you navigate through stage geometry like that, but it was okay there I guess. The boss was pretty good too.

Gonna start working on my scores now. I would've been #3 on stage 2, but I didn't realize you have to hit a button to submit your score to the leaderboard. :(

I'm liking it, but the whole 16:9 vertical shooter deal is giving me some trouble. Your ship doesn't move very fast, so when you need to get to the other side of the screen to take out an enemy, you usually can't get there in time unless you know it's coming (I guess). It doesn't seem as tightly designed as some other games. But it's still fun. I like the scoring system a lot, and a good scoring system makes a game 5x more fun to play.

I just spent almost 2 hours playing stage 2 and trying to get a good score (and I finally did - got 1.7m). I'd always wind up chaining half of the stage and then dying right before the boss, causing me to lose my bonus. :maf

Yeah, I played it for a few hours and it's pretty nice.  The scoring system makes the game.

The only thing I wish it had to be more like Cave is 1) I wish the gold would automatically come to you; having to go pick it up is annoying since like you said, your ship moves slow and you want to get moving to the other side to fight new enemies and 2) I wish your ship had more a more powerful screen filling width shot like in Cave games, which again would help with the slow moving wide screen ratio so you could still shoot down all the enemies.

Otherwise it's great and the replay value with all the bonus levels, and shop, and 0-5 star ranking system, and having to play on higher difficulties to progress; it's all great stuff that means I'll be playing it for 5x the amount I would be playing it otherwise.  Definitely a good deal at $8.

In that way it seems more like it's designed for co-op than solo play. Too bad about the no online, though.

Got in the top 5 for every stage, and I got #1 in Gauntlet mode. 8)

I like Legendary the most because it's pretty well balanced for scoring & survival. Divine seems okay, but scoring on most of the stages seems a little annoying because you have to use your barrier for survival sometimes. But I dunno, I haven't played it much. I finished up all of the challenges as well. They're a nice distraction, but I wish they had leaderboards. That would've added a reason to play them more than once.

The last level is craaaaap.  Not only dodging tons of bullets but ENVIRONMENT KILLS and good job making the environment DARK BLUE so it's hard to see anything.  Blah.  Will try to beat this another day.

There's also a huuuuge discrepency in this game between the levels themselves and the bosses.  I got to the stage 5 boss with 0 credits, 0 lives and I took out his first form without getting hit.  Same with the other stages on legendary.  I'd usually die a ton during the stage itself and then beat the bosses without losing a single life.  Bosses are generally a joke in this even on the higher difficulties, whereas the stage has a lot of bullets going on.

I also find it hard to keep track of the hitbox of my guy when dodging bullets coming in at an angle.  Wish they put a glowing dot on your ship so you could always see the hitbox.

Also they should have done a ketsui credit increase where the longer you play, the more credits you get so that everyone can at least see all the stages and the ending.  Stage 5 on legendary is going to be a biiitch to complete on 2 credits :\

Alright beat it.

+Bosses are fun
-Bosses are all a joke except the final form of the last boss
-Stages are pretty fun
-Except stage 5 sucks and the 2nd half of stage 2 is kind of eh; some of the bullet patterns are kind of iffy
+music is great
+art is great
-except it's not always easy to see the bullets
+unlockables are great

About as good, fun and polished as any of the $10-15 XBLA/PSN shmups; not up there with the better Cave stuff or Raiden Fighters Aces though imo.
