The Anno series is great and I'm expecting Banished to be fantastic too. Unlike most other resource management sims it seems like it's actually challenging and it's easy to reach a fail state. Anno and Settlers are mostly limited by how much land is available for new buildings. Having to plan several years ahead just to make plum ale is weirdly captivating.
I adored the first game and setting up trade routes was fun in 1404. I watched some guy's Youtube series of the Imperator scenario from 1404 Venice. Highest difficulty, aggressive AI opponents, huge map, etc. and that just kind of put a lid on the series for me. With the exception of the combat I had done everything he had, just not as efficiently and seeing it deflated any kind of desire to play more. I looked at the other scenarios and immediately lost interest in puzzling out how to do them. I dunno, I think those games are just lost on me now. Not even 2070 seemed to be all that different from what I've seen in the demo.
I do need to try out the Settlers games though, I somehow managed to evade them for all this time.

Also, I think my video card just died. Will have to get a cheap replacement until I can afford a more permanent upgrade. :stahp

Yeah, Anno 2070 wasn't that great. Settlers 7 is one of my favorite games the last five years and you should absolutely give it a shot.

1404 was definitely the apex of the anno series. i wouldn't call 2070 a misstep and mechanically it had more going on than 1404, but it lost a lot of its charm.

Sunflowers only ever published the games afaik. Up until 1404 anyway, when Ubi took over. The first two were developed by Max Design who've shut down after 1503. Related Designs developed 1701 and its expansion and then Blue Byte collaborated with them on 1404, Venice and 2070. I don't know if any of the original developers migrated to all these companies over the years but I kinda doubt it. People don't really move around the country (or to other countries, in Max Design's case, since they were an Austrian company) to chase a job like developers in the US seem to do.

it's even more impressive then that the games have remained so polished and consistent. 1404 made even blizzard games look clumsy and unintuitive by comparison.

i've search around for word of even a hint of a numbered sequel and all i've found is similarly distressed souls stumbling around clawing for a light in the black.

xseed is bringing Trails in the Sky 1 and 2 to the PC next year.  Great news for :uguu lovers.  Having played the first one on the PSP, I think it's a great game, reminiscent of Grandia.

Grandia, you say? I'll be paying attention then. No other game captured the feeling of adventure quite as well as Grandia.

It's nowhere near as good as Grandia I or II but it's a solid game that is reminiscent of it.

Spending one minute of your trailer zooming around a still scene when your game is this ugly is nothing short of hubris. Bot-mageddon indeed.

The animations look great, even though they look kind of sluggish. Also wondering about the controls. Moving the camera, the character and aiming at the same time, or is there a lock-on? It doesn't look like it.
