What's your job?
« on: March 01, 2011, 02:12:22 PM »
I just wondered what everybody on the Bore did for a living.  How do you pay your bills?  If you're still getting the schoolin's, what are you going to do?

I work as an EMT and ER Technician.

Transcribing surveillance logs and recorded statements pertaining to workers' comp fraud investigations, so typing for seven or eight hours a day. It's every bit as boring as it sounds. Still, I was lucky to even get hired, and it's infinitely more bearable than my previous job at fucking d.d.'s Discounts.

Oh, yeah, and regarding Kosma's thread a few days back about effort at work, I work as hard as I can all day every day despite probably being underpaid and having some of the most thankless duties in the office, so suck on that, slackers

I'm also getting the ball rolling on going back to school. I ultimately would like to work in a hospital, though doing what I don't know

Shipping Magnate.  It's a tough job, but someone has to do it.  Mostly it involves wearing ascots, drinking martinis and going to "work" around noon.  I assure you, I am the man for the job.

...technically my job title is "shipping coordinator" for a small business, but I much prefer being a Shipping Magnate.  I have all of my supplies sent "ATTN: SHIPPING MAGNATE"

In reality, I do programming. I'm currently working for a large financial institution in Charlotte where I swear I'm working on the most awful code base ever devised by man. Each and every new day I find more and more ways to lose the will to live as I stare at this horrible mess of twisted logic. Just a real simple example that nearly sent me to take a header off the parking deck was something that was basically this:

Code: [Select]
if (foo == 42)
    return 42;
else
    return foo;

I mean, what kind of sick mind writes that?

Hospital work can get to be a pain in the ass unless you have the right job.  In my experience: you won't make a decent living doing anything below the nursing level (i.e. what I'm doing right now  :(); nurses make good money, but get no respect; lab technicians stay busy; radiology techs make decent money and get a lot of respect when there's not a radiologist around; respiratory therapists make good money, but can be held accountable for a lot of bad shit; occupational therapists make good money, but have to teach people how to do some really personal things; physical therapists make good money, but can get a bad rep from a single bad review; MD's are at the top of the medical chain, but they can easily be hated by many; and finally, administrators make great money, piss everyone off, and have little stress about it at the end of the day.

Hope that helps!   :lol

tl;dr Be a doctor or an administrator.  Make good money, piss people off.

I make de vidjo games. Lately I'm directing audio, though I want to get back to art.

Lyte, what is a "service desk"? Do people ask to be serviced?

Service Desk = Help Desk.

I'm a tier 1 tech support monkey...so basically I get lawyers and their secretaries in various moods calling up because they don't know how to use their computers/phones/whatever.  The amount of people who call in with issues that can fixed simply by restarting an application or their computers is just staggering.  Some of the things people ask about are so mind-numbingly simple and/or lacking in common sense to the point where I am stunned they are even asking.   :lol

At least a good number of the people who call are nice and courteous.

People who call seeking assistance should always be courteous. In the rare cases where it turns out not to be true, I'm surprised when someone who wants my help fails to realize that.
