I take away peoples freedoms and liberties on behalf of the tyrannical government.  I beat minorities, oppress the masses, and take away their guns, all with the desire and purpose of keeping the population in a state of fear when they see me.

...

oh wait.  That's what JayDubya thinks my job is.  :teehee

I make de vidjo games. Lately I'm directing audio, though I want to get back to art.

Lyte, what is a "service desk"? Do people ask to be serviced?

Service Desk = Help Desk.

I'm a tier 1 tech support monkey...so basically I get lawyers and their secretaries in various moods calling up because they don't know how to use their computers/phones/whatever.  The amount of people who call in with issues that can fixed simply by restarting an application or their computers is just staggering.  Some of the things people ask about are so mind-numbingly simple and/or lacking in common sense to the point where I am stunned they are even asking.   :lol

At least a good number of the people who call are nice and courteous.

Yea it can be baffling

People who call seeking assistance should always be courteous. In the rare cases where it turns out not to be true, I'm surprised when someone who wants my help fails to realize that.

I think maybe you've been in Japan too long!   :lol The rude people tend to have the attitude that "they" are paying us to be their little monkeys, so they can treat us however.  It's not just yelling, but putting you on hold without saying anything, taking control of the computer back to start doing something while you are trying to fix their problem, hanging up without saying a word, etc.  Then there's requests for us to do all this work and update/install shit so they can watch some dumb video their buddy sent them, or get access to some non work-related website.

I used to do the same exact job for employees at California AAA.  They were all idiots.  And they all had a surprising amount of porn on their computers with, "No idea how that got there..."  :lol

I have yet to come across any porn on someone's PC, although one of the firms I support deals with the entertainment industry, so there will be requests to unlock porn sites from time to time.   :lol  I have also been on people's computers and seen documents for various video games...some out, some not.  It's kinda cool to see that.

"Have you tried turning it off and on again?"

I have had to ask this.   :lol  There are a lot of people who never fucking shut down or restart...their CPU time is just :rofl

:lol Yeah, I've been feeling that I've been in Japan too long myself, lately.  :-\
...but I wrote "should," because I have also worked IT/Support in the USA, and I do know the attitude about which you wrote. I just know that when I deal with anyone who is ostensibly trying to assist me with anything, I go out of my way to be nice, which pretty consistently results in better-than-average treatment in return.

Unless the requester is the top person in the company, you can get around that by making certain your tasks are received by email, "so I can organize my task list and make certain that I can responsibly cover everyone's requests." When someone starts asking for non-work related stuff, respond and ask them to get their boss' clearance first. Or CC the boss on your initial response.

This could, of course, backfire if the person-in-charge is also as big a slacker as the requester is. If the lack of usefullness is endemic at your business, you may be stuck installing everyone's time-killing applications for them, but you will also probably be needing for work in the not-too-distant future.

I've worked a lot of shitty jobs and gamestop isn't even near the bottom.

heh, I think that's a better idea for a thread:  List the shitty jobs you've had in the past.

Moi:

picking strawberries (hunched over for 8 hours picking in the heat of summer, for shit pay)
baling/weeding/other tobacco (ya, I'm an asthmatic anti-smoking nazi, and in my teenage years my parents forced me to work on my uncle's tobacco farm.  Family issues! :lol)
General park maintenance/cleaning/troubleshooting at a campground (highlights: 50% of the job was cleaning the washrooms.  Irrationally demanding Nazi boss.  Being hit on as a 19-year old by creepy middle-aged women)
two mind-numbing factory gigs (great pay, but soul-destroying tedium)

i've loved all my jobs.

1st: working for my mom's boss.  was a lawyer who watched a lot of porn on his office computer.  i cleaned it up for him once so then he started to pay me to go in and "maintain" the computers.  The hardest thing I ever did was create a wireless network for them.  Got paid pretty damn good too.

2nd: worked at a pet store.  got the job because a girl I liked worked there and said there was an opening.  got some action, played with pets.  used to get stoned at a friends down the street after school and then go to worked stoned.  but i also cleaned up a lot of bird shit for 5 bucks an hour

3rd: answered phones at 1 800 flowers.  Easy.  Became a supervisor in 3 weeks.

4th: call center for surveys and market research.  Easy.  Became a supervisor in about 2 months.  Made good money too (considering the job and cost of living in the town).  at the company christmas party everyone was getting stoned

5th: Pizza Hut.  Met my wife.  Met a lot of other chicks to mess around with, got fat eating crazy pizza creations.  Became a manager after about 6 months and made 17 an hour.  Even as a driver I made damn good money (for being 19 that is).

6th: Security Guard at my current company.  Learned a lot about office politics.  got promoted easily.  Made good money and made a lot of good friends

7th:Corporate Security for my current company.  made damn good money (for being 20).  Learned a lot, got a lot of free training and made a lot of business contacts.

8th: Reynolds and Reynolds data center tech.  lol.  I slept the whole time  didn't learn shit.  quit after 6 months but met some good people.

9th.  SAP admin at my current company.  I don't make as much as I did in my other position but the hours and responsibilities are better.  I work with a lot of good people and get paid decently.

I left out the non-sucky jobs in my list.

Paper delivery as early teen.

Clerk at video rental store.  good gig as a teen, but store went out of business five months after I started  :'(.  Highlight was a douchebag kid a year younger than me trying to rent an 18A movie without ID.  When I denied him he not-so-subtlely threatened me, and I rolled my eyes at him.  (I had intervened in a fight involving him weeks before, dragged him off of the poor tool he was beating on.  He stared at me in rage for stopping his fun, then sulked off... :lol)   (other "highlight": 80-year old man renting a porno, then coming back an hour later to return it, with the tape left halfway through.  Guess he didn't need it anymore   :-\ :yuck)

Security guard at the local police college, and a local construction site.  Easy-ass job, spent the vast majority of the shift reading, or surfing the net.  Of course, when I did my rounds, I would come back to see my creepy 60-year old coworker asleep on the couch in the lobby with late-night softcore porn left on the lobby TV.  One time he even tried watching that shit when I was sitting right there. :-\

1. Labor work with grandfather - after retiring from his teaching job he dedicated himself to his grass palette farm. This was my first job. We'd get orders and go to people's yard 90 degree weather and put the paletes down and even mow the grass.

2. School worker - worked in cafeteria for my college. I did a lot of jobs: I'd cook sometimes but was mainly a cashier and helped make sure no one stole snacks from the front area. I would eat sushi almost every day from this place, bad idea.

3. Computer lab assistant - same college.

4. Pizza Hut - Shit job. Maintained the back area: sprayed pizza pans, did dishes, made the pizza, made the wings, just about everything. Sucked shit. Quit this job.

5. Freelance graphic design work - first job I REALLY liked and the one I've been doing the longest. I'd do logos and stuff for people. It was an extension of the digital media curriculum at my college. We'd make business cards and had to advertise ourselves.

6. Grocery Store - Worst job I've ever had. Horrible hours, horrible pay, made me grouchy. Hired me in the midst of a strike, so while they assured us that we're not temp help, we actually were. I'd be lucky if I had 2 hours of work at that place a week. I was fired, but I should have quit anyways. Shit job. As for the job itself, I'd push carts and bag groceries.

7. School janitor. Good money as a college student.

8. Internship - worked at a local tv station.

9. Video editor - At a small gig. Good money, great experience.

10. Graphic designer - at marketing and business firm.

Uh, I've worked on and off for them as a GA for six years, consistently ranked in numbers as one of the best GAs in the country, and still no promotion. Tehjaybo is in the same boat. Lmfao. I guess I'm not sucking enough dick (or the right ones).

I like working at GameStop, and I like being good at my job, but minimum wage isn't going to cut it.  I'm currently being considered for promotion again, but the last time I got hired back I was told I would be promoted within the month and that obviously didn't happen.

Other than GameStop, I've worked:

-At a liquor store (fucking worst job ever, the guy who ran the store was the classic Scrooge archetype and he was a complete and total ass to all of his employees every day of his life. Also, all the people who got promoted were also total fucking assholes.)

-as a telemarketer. First for the US Census, then for Coventry Health Care enrolling people in Medicare. Both were pretty easy jobs and the pay was good. Although I got paid less for the Medicare, it was more fun because I could surf EB all day and do my fantasy football team on Sundays with relative ease.

-in the Alumni Department of the college I worked. If it wasn't for the fact that I got paid shit because a job was required by the college I worked at and it went toward my tuition, this would be my favorite job. Lots of secretarial work, but I got to do some video editing and Photoshopping as well. My bosses were awesome as well.

-Data Entry. Got paid amazingly well due to overtime, but it was boring as fuck. Luckily, they allowed me to have an iPod and I quickly realized that I could put all sorts of movies and TV shows on it, as well as audiobooks. Made the time fly.

Bloodwake, I assumed that joke was a crack at Willco.

Anyway, the jobs I worked:

1) Factory work.  Since this was a remote area, they would bus in people.  People whenever they were called were called by number because people were bussed in.  Extremely hot temperatures with few areas to get any water.  I wound up having to bring a gallon of water to work because it was impossible to get any water.  Soaked through my shirts on a daily basis.  The only upside was that there were a few cute girls that worked there that wore as little clothing as possible and seeing them sweat through that :drool  Otherwise, it was low pay with probably several labor violations.  I got bonuses and raises for being a high performer but it wasn't worth the agonizingly fast paced schedule to make the cut to be in the group to get raises and bonuses.  I stopped because football practice started.

2) Retail work.  Shit job mopping up after people who like to shit everywhere except in the toilet.  Seeing people try to steal merchandise and dump the containers in a corner that wasn't tracked by a video camera.  Working with people who preferred to start cleaning and straightening their shit up five minutes before closing.  The upside was that I made a few friends there and was in good with the managers there, allowing me to get away with more shit than people usually did...except in the end where the HR person was sexually harassing me.  Once I turned down her advances, they cut my hours back to two days a week working in a hot back room sorting fixtures.  Oh well, it wasn't a huge deal considering I was going away to university.  At the time, it sucked because I was hoping to save some money up.  Left to go to the university.

3) Calling center.  I asked university alumni to donate money.  It was probably the shadiest job I ever worked at.  Lying was encouraged, hell anything was encouraged as long as you got them to fork over a few hundred dollars.  I quit after a couple of supervisors were giving me tips over the phone (while I was with a customer) to get a 90 year old widow to give me $500.  It was just too demoralizing.

4) Night stocking.  I was the only white guy there.  Ruined my sleep schedule but I bought a lot of great weed from a co-worker who was a dealer who had nine children.  Enough to where I virtually had no money left.  Left to go back to school.

5) Grocery Store.  Worked in the meat department.  Probably the best non-career job I had.  A lot of stupid customers but great friends, smoked weed on a regular basis after work, stole huge amounts of shit from Starbucks who had stuff in our freezer.  Paid pretty well too.  I left because I decided to intern part time.

6) Internship.  I worked the internship and the grocery store for a summer.  Given how I worked nothing but low paying jobs, the intern pay was head and shoulders above the rest.  Had fun working there.

7) Engineer - Where I'm at now.  It's ok work but I'm aligning myself with the management side of things for a while.  Pays very well with a chance to break into the six figures at age 26.  Next year I take my PE.  I hope to leave the engineering work behind within a couple of years.  If things go well like they are now, I don't think that will be an issue.  Although I'm saving a shitload of money right now in case I sour on the job and want to do something else.

I haven't had many jobs and most of them were pretty easy even by dainty middle-class suburban white people standards.

1) Shopping Cart Bitch for now defunct local grocery store chain - I had this job before I was 14, breaking some sort of child labor law, I'm sure.  Spent all summer standing out on the concrete in the hot sun waiting to be run down by some deranged senior.  If that isn't considered a hazardous occupation, it should be.  I ran out and burned my work shirt on the railroad tracks the very moment I quit.

1a) Newspaper Delivery Bitch - Had this job concurrently with the one above.  Hated, hated, hated, hated rolling fucking newspapers.  I don't like holding an inky newspaper to this day.  By the end, unless the screen door was open, I was just throwing open newspapers on people's steps, sheets blowing all over the yard and shit.  My bicycle was a titanic piece of garbage, too.  More than once I can recall picking that thing up over my head and bodyslamming the fuck out of it repeatedly with the papers still in the basket.  My dad drove me around during the horrible 5am Sunday morning routes.  I'd feel rotten about it, but he's the one that made me take the job in the first place.

2,3,4) Retail stooge at Old Navy, Office Max, Macy's - stood around pretending to help customers when in actuality was actively avoiding contact with them, all during Christmas season.  Was fired from all three, of course (one after getting caught sleeping on the job... in the middle of the sales floor), but it was good while it lasted.  Don't remember much else due to the zombification required to hold this sort of position.

5) Gaming counter nerd at Toys R Us - was fun except for also having to double as the lead cashier most of the time.  Hid behind the counter (literally, on hands and knees) if someone came in my area on a slow day.  Also slept in the stockroom quite often.  Not ashamed to say that I was intentionally everything you hate about gaming retail assholes: refused to sell M-rated games to minors leading into a prepared speech on moral obligation, pushed magazines on virtually everyone then vocally or pantomimed feigned disappointment when denied, recommended terrible games to the uninformed and informed alike, goaded buyers into picking my platform of choice in spite of their specific needs.  I was the post-ironic, self-loathing game clerk archetype that all nerds have fantisized about being at one time or another.  I should either be drawn and quartered or someone should erect a statue.

6) Biology department assistant at university - Boring.  Cataloged a bunch of dusty science-y garbage.

7) Data analyst intern at Citigroup, fraud department - sat in a conference room, typed up SQL script, sipped coffee, looked at your purchase records and giggled at the naughty things your significant other bought on the internets and later tried to deny by saying their card was stolen.  Office sitcom sort of shit.

8.) Current job, similar to above, but at a marketing firm - similar to above, but with some light project managment; far more responsibility and freedom to carry out projects from beginning to end as I see fit.  Interesting, if nothing else.

1. worked in the back of a local import/anime videogame store, helping build their online website. i started off with basically doing everything and eventually got promoted to managing the entire inventory. i was paid near minimum wage but as a 17 year old, that wasn't too bad. i basically saw it as working for 6 bacon cheeseburgers or 3 steel reserves. i was promised alot in the future though, but i quit to go on to my next job. my friend who stayed did end up getting everything that was promised  :'( but oh well. i hated playing videogames for years following that job and for that, i'm thankful. i ended up getting more hobbies than i otherwise would have.

2. started as a busboy and eventually became a server at the highest earning restaurant in terms of revenue ($10m) in the dc area. hard work, worked full time and as a result, basically dropped out of school for two years. i wish i could say i saved alot of money then but i have no idea where it went. i was making 15-20 an hour :(. worst job i've ever had

3. barista at starbucks. i miss this job the most. i worked at a small forgotten starbucks tucked away in a small forgotten shopping center that is made up of nearly all restaurants. i worked with an amazingly diverse staff, had a great manager and knew nearly every customer because our entire customer base was made up by regulars. then we got a new manager... who didn't work her way from the ground up. sigh... she ruined the store and we lost not only our employees but a lot of our customers.

4. i worked as a manager under a masonic lodge in a job i rather not specify. i wish i could go into details but too much politics interfered with my day to day job. once i stepped in and took over the failing business and rose revenues by 30% during the peak of the recession, two of the executives tried to take credit for my job and eventually one of them screwed up and i had to take the blame. i wad demoted, but managed to keep the same pay but... i couldn't escape the politics and racism. but what a weird place... so many stories

for the last 8 months of being unemployed, i've been focused entirely on school. i'll be done in the fall though :(
then i'll join you fucks  :maf

That is probably the most inappropriate phrase I've seen in weeks. And I have even been reading Nintendosbooger's "Let me define your ethnic identity" thread.

1. King Kullen - Cashier - worked as a cashier for "America's First Supermarket", the summer after I graduated HS. It sucked, and I learned to quickly become a misanthrope.

2. K-Mart - Cashier - this was the worst job I've ever had. I didn't know Long Island was such host to WT and rednecks before this job. I got it all... the stereotypical crazy black lady thinking the "gubmit" is out to get her, the Jesus freaks, the parents with screaming kids. The store was so poorly run, most of the pricetags on stuff were wrong and thus the customers would take it out on me all the time. I worked over the summer, and this was one of the hottest summers on record... and guess what? The air conditioner was "broken" and K-Mart management was too cheap to fix it (I think they were just too cheap to bother turning it on). Horrible, I'm glad that store went under, got torn down, and replaced with a Lowe's.

3. Data entry at a small car insurance company - Made $10/hr listening to music and looking at pictures of cars while typing out data. One of which belonged to Method Man. Boring, but I was happy that I didn't have to deal with people and I got to chill and listen to music while doing it.

4. Web development at the car insurance company - After getting my CS degree, I ran into IT people at the car insurance place, overheard that they were looking for web devs, I told them I have experience and a degree. Worked for them, doing HTML, SQL, ColdFusion,  (server-side language) and Javascript. I really liked the work I did, and I learned a lot about web architecture, although the pay was kinda shitty.

5. Software engineer at major defense contractor - My current job, really can't complain about anything but a long commute. Pays well, great benefits. Yeah I'm part of the Military-Industrial-Complex. :patel

I've had a few, but I'll only list one:

Roy Rogers (Fast Food/Cashier) - I don't know if they're around any more, probably a few left in the midwest and south, but it was my first job and the worst one. It was situated in a mall, so it was always busy and the fact that it was in close vicinity to my high school didn't help, either - students dropped by just to fuck with me, changing their orders and shit. There were no perks, not even taking some of that garbage food home, because the grill man and those that had seniority always grabbed the leftovers. My breaking point was when we had to promote this new burger, and I was told to wear this plastic cowboy vest and hat as part of the promotion. I didn't even show up the next day, which pissed my friend off since he got me the job and, thus, making him look bad. Oh well, fuck him. And fuck Roy Rogers.

Jobs - i'm going to have to include placements as well as it's a bit short

1) Supermarket - tidying, painting, moving trolleys. Cash to get me through my teens
2) HS Placement at Nuclear power plant - Environmental labs - though asked for IT :/. First task was to cut up fish and take radiation readings. I'm shit scared of fish. Fail. Spent rest of week putting bits of chimney filters into geiger readers.
3) HS Placement at Nuclear power plant - Chemical lab - though asked for IT :/. Grossest job i've ever had to do. Putting peoples pish samples through a chemical process to detect for abnormalities. Place stank of piss - not surprisingly
4) HS Placement at Nuclear power plant - IT ! WOAH, third time is a charm. In a hilarious mix up i was screamed at by some crazy employee who thought i was from BT and there to fix her phone line. NOt knowning what was going on i actually attempted to fix the line. Was funny i guess once the truth was revealed.
5) Chemical plant IT Uni placement - very weird, told i would NEVER be a computer programmer and that i should look into something else. Was pretty much an awful job and i was completely demotivated and was getting sh1t on a daily basis (sometimes for projects i had nothing to do with - scapegoated total). I managed to poison a few of the employees though who left to go contracting.
6) MCPS Music Copyright - first job out of uni. I interviewed at a few places and had offers, but this one was perfect. Second love at the time was music and the job was perfect. I had to sit a 5 hour exam as part of the interview process which was a bit harsh. Amazing job - so much fun with great people and near zero stress. Promoted almost every year, made senior developer by 23. asked in interview what i was looking for pay wise - they went 3 grand over what i was looking for. Hell, i joined as a junior coder and after three weeks i was taken into the managers office who basically said "it's clear you aren't a junior coder, so we are making you a full coder -  - here have another 4 grand. +O O:O Why i ever left this job is a complete mystery to me. I never wanted to be off even when sick as it was an absolute riot every single day - hell, and my working hours were 7 until 3!!!! ffs.
7) Finance industry IT - one day i hate it, the next day i love it - the great thing is that it is never the same - the job changes on a weekly basis which keeps things fresh. Most IT last about 3 years, i am now in my 11th.... either redundacy or glory lie ahead! lol
8)XFE-gave up on my troops and abdicated the throne after 4 years :fbm
