???

I played Saints Row years ago and declared it better than GTAIV

I still need to get SR2, but I don't see the point with 3 coming out.

haha, another classic Himuro moment.

No need to buy an awesome game, becuase it's sequel is coming out in a years time! Just play it bro. It's even on PS3, should be cheap as by now

You should play it immediately. There is no shortage of jank in the game. Not Deadly Premonition or Mercs 2 levels of jank, but janky nonetheless.

Deadly Premonition isnt janky though. The scenery poly-count and textures are sub-Dreamcast but the game engine and gameplay are solid. Theres no bullshit physics or ragdoll shit/getting stuck in scenery etc. to speak of. Sure the driving and tank controls are "clunky" by todays standards, but they do they job.

I guess I'm just arguing vidya slang semantics here - I'm defining 'janky' as being: "dodgy game engine shit gets you stuck in the road/in a doorway/on a garbage can and thus makes you swear and fucks up your gameplay". By this definition RDR is the jankiest pile of shit ever next to Deadly Premonition, lol. The Euphoria Engine sucks!

The PC ports of Saints Row 2 and Red: Faction: Guerrilla were both created by external studios - and suffered quality issues.

For their follow-ups, however, Volition decided to bring PC development duties home – and Barker reckons PC gamers will reap the rewards.

"You should see [the PC version of Red Faction: Armageddon], it looks absolutely beautiful. If you've got a great graphics card it looks fantastic. We definitely believe PC games are great and if they're done right and done well by a studio, they're phenomenal.

"There's a lot of debate and discussion. I can't predict the future, but I'm really happy with how Red Faction: Armageddon looks on PC. It's beautiful."

In recent months some high-profile games, including Crysis 2 and Dragon Age 2, have suffered leaks and popped up on torrent sites ahead of release.

THQ's own Homefront was also available to illegally download ahead of release.

But Volition isn't too bothered about piracy. "I don't think [piracy] is something at the forefront for us," he said. "First and foremost, we want to make sure we're making a game people would want to pirate. Let's make a game that's worth stealing, and then we'll worry about making sure they don't."

yeah, great news that they're working on the PC ports.  Saint's Row 2 on PC was so dreadful that I kept playing it on my 360!  RF:G ran at 1.5 or 2 times the normal speed, but it was awesome if you played Benny Hill music on top of it (eventually it got patched  :'( )

But you liked GTA IV, right?

Liking GTA IV but not Saints Row says some interesting things about your preferences. GTA IV was a well-intentioned but entirely too serious "Open World" game where there was nothing to do except the storyline. Saints Row is more about user choice than the main story. Look at the character creation stage: SR gives you millions of variations, and GTA IV gives you a different tracksuit jacket. After playing for an hour. GTA IV sends you out on story missions, Saint Row says -- "wanna blow shit up? here are some grenades."

Most of all, SR is even player-facing in its mission save/load. GTA IV says "TRY IT AGAIN, STUPID. IN FACT, DRIVE YOUR ASS ALL THE WAY BACK, SO YOU CAN DO IT AGAIN." Saints Row says, "Huh, that's too bad. Want to try it again? Here is the last checkpoint, with all your ammo and armor in the same condition, and your car is parked at the same fucked-up angle you left it on the curb."

So... basically you want to be with someone who treats you badly and disregards your needs.

This is actually a pretty sound analysis. Unless it was your original intention to make a joke, I do enjoy being abused and dominated. However, that has little to do with why I enjoyed GTAIV and why I didn't enjoy SR. Honestly I still can't decide why I liked GTAIV so much, it's actually kind of frustrating. I agree with most criticisms, at least the ones about the repetitive mission structure and lack of mid-mission checkpoints, and yet still I loved the shit out of that game.

I feel I should mention I have a hard time enjoying open-world games, so while I'm sure SR nails everything fans of that genre are looking for, I can't stand sandbox games in the first place. It doesn't seem like SR does much else for people who are looking for more than just a really dynamic open-world experience, which is great, but not what I'm looking for.

At least he's not one of those fegs who hates Saints Row because it "stole" everything from GTA or some similar pathetic reason (Image removed from quote.)

Yeah I never understood this mentality. If anything, Saint's Row is the reason I love GTAIV even more. Without SR, I don't think Rockstar would have ever realized how much they fucked the player over on a regular basis with their previous game design philosophy.

I like the second Saints Row. It was a fun open world game. I still prefer GTA and the GTA series and GTA 4 by a wide margin but like I say I always know that opinion is in the minority on here and on GAF. I don't like the story or characters of Saints Row which is kinda a big deal for me in open world games as I tend to need to feel immersed in the world or the story to enjoy open world games but even without that I found Saints Row 2 enjoyable so I'll mostly likely enjoy this one also.

I like SR2 a lot more than GTA4, but I can understand that.  The city in saint's row is pretty sterile and lacks a lot of the character of liberty city in GTA4.  There is a lot of detail in that world and it's actually kinda crazy when you stumble upon the tinier ones; I've found fun in the game just by cruising around the world.  I just wish playing missions was more fun, and the mechanics weren't so sloppy, and there wasn't a bunch of archaic design that makes playing it a hassle.  It's crazy to think that GTA4 didn't have checkpoints until the DLC, and it still didn't impact the main game.  Saint's Row nails a lot of that stuff.

I think Stoney helped me out with that post of his. I think atmosphere in an open-world game is important to keep me playing, and there ain't much of that in SR.

True 'dat.

It's funny, the first SR tried SO HARD to distance itself from GTA. The side games were always about pimping, drug dealing, or some other crime. GTA's "samaritan" stuff, like Vigilante, Ambulance, Firefighter, these were all absent from SR1 presumably because they wanted the player to feel like a gangster at all times.

Then GTA IV dropped all those from the game as well, and SR2 implemented each of them, and did them better. FUZZ is probably the best of the bunch. The firefighter missions feel like a bad dream where stuff is burning but people aren't reacting to it... or catching themselves on fire. The ambulance has an AED minigame. :lol

I like open-world game to be fun, or to at least reward exploration to some extent, there's really not a whole lot of either in GTAIV.

I never do all that extra stuff in open world games. Red Dead Redemption was the first one where I felt tempted to and did some of it.

I just like the setting of them being in an open world. It's why something like Mafia 2 not having a lot of traditional open world world elements didn't bother me also.

I know other people are the opposite though. It's why games like Just Cause and Crackdown are popular (especially on forums) even though I really don't care for either of those.

What I liked about Saints Row is that design wise it was a very smart game. They constantly upgraded you and had upgraded mechanisms in place for doing the extra stuff or even story missions. Something I fully admit GTA 4 desperately needed. That was really good design and I enjoyed it which is probably the reason why I liked Saints Row 2 despite not really liking the humour or style of the game.

For what its worth I always think its a good thing both titles exist. Saints Row for people who want all the crazy stuff. And GTA for people who may want something a bit different than that. I think its a good thing that both series are pretty different from each other now.

Will buy for the character editor alone. :rock

There's something bizarrely appealing about the Saints Row series to me.  It's like a team of juggalos got together and designed a GTA game.  It's fucking clown shoes stupid but that's what I like about it.

I am so much more excited for this than GTA5. Rockstar will have to produce something that makes RDR look like crap to surpass Saints 3.

The writing will still suck, though.
