Ooh. How weird. Costume Quest and Stacking are both published by THQ but the IP is held by Double Fine.

First a licensed Sesame Street game, and now they give up the IP to Microsoft. I hope there is a hat made of money involved.

Looks like it could be a good mecha action game. Hopefully it plays like MechAssault 1 (not the abysmal piece of trash MA2).

Because his shitty games bomb (and suck) and give publishers a reason why they dont support them, snuffing out other potential games that are probably considerably better than his half-assed attempts

Have you noticed every new game is from a different publisher? The guy needs to leave - now.

I guess the launch is at MS' discretion, and giving DoubleFine their talking points, because there's no way that game is several months away from shipping. I mean, the whole theory of this series of games is to get the games out fast, right?

Like Costume Quest and Stacked before it, Trenched  is one of those downloadable games that almost makes you feel like you're getting away with robbery for paying $15 for it rather than full retail price. This is obviously not a quickie release; top to bottom, it's polished and slathered with personality. It has quickly become my current favorite multiplayer experience on Live and is definitely my favorite tower defense game to date. My only wish is for more missions, parts and weapons, but the core experience is robust enough to come highly recommended. It's another win for Double Fine in downloadable games.

Costume Quest definitely did not feel like more than a $15 game.  Same with Stacking from what I played of it.  Any reviewer who thinks these are stunning deals and close to $40-60 retail games in quality does not get much credibility from me.

I think their games are pretty original/creative in concept, but derivative and kinda crappy when it comes to gameplay. I wish Tim Schafer just lent his storytelling/ideas to a team who could actually do something good with his concepts.

Don't get me wrong, I like Doublefine's games.  But $15 is the max I'd ever pay for them.  Honestly they'd be much better buys at $10.

Will pick up Trenched just to keep the studio alive.  Still need to finish Stacking before I play it though.

I agree; Psychonauts was a better overall game than BL. But I still liked BL a LOT. Mostly the visuals and overall aesthetic. But Psychonauts, I felt like I was playing a twisted Disney movie, and felt anxious to see how it resolved.

Little did I know that I'd get repeatedly beaten about the face and neck by the last level, that forced-progression trapeze climb in the bigtop... WITH A BUGGY CAMERA.

Hopefully with the reverted rights to Doublefine, they'll patch that damned camera before they ship an HD-updated XBLA version of the game.

But it's a tower-defense game WITH LOOT!

It's funny how the "it's not an RTS" line backfired so badly, that this time, there was a whole contingent of people saying "OMG it's a MECH GAME!" and Schafer quickly gave a press release saying, "No, it's got mechs, but it's tower defense with loot!" :lol

The tower defense aspect of the game is just that. One aspect of the game, want to focus on shooting stuff with your mech? That's cool too. Starhawk's doing a similar thing.

:lol

You just couldn't wait to get back to the manic, nympho-, acute-paranoiac chick, huh?

The game knew what it was just fine; it was an action-driven RTS with OWG elements, not an action-OWG with RTS elements. It's like saying a chocolate chip cookie is a candy bar because it's 25% chocolate. It's still a cookie.

As if to prove Bepbo right, I bought it, played the first level, and really like it. And as with other DF games, it's a riff on a genre I don't normally like, but the light approach and gameplay variations which I enjoy, will likely deter or offend actual fans of the base genre.

This game is really fun! It's less of a tower-defense game than Toy Soldiers, so far. It looks like it relies mainly on the trench-walker. That's a mech! You like mechs, don't you bepbuuuu~?

but the mechs are still slow and it's kinda boringly shooting at waves of enemies.  I just don't get the appeal of tower defense games.  It and MMOs are the subgenres I despise most.  Maybe one day someone will make an MMOTD and I'll like it! It could be for Kinect too! And made by Wayforward!

granted, customizing mechs and loot could be fun eventually, but the demo was boring.

A friend who is a huge, huge fan of Tower Defense and "Hero Defense" (e.g. PixelJunk Monsters and Army of Darkness Defense) says this is excellent.

I was stunned, because usually Double Fine manages to make a game that pisses off fans of the base genre. Nobody who likes RPGs seemed to really like Costume Quest, and nobody here who is a fan of adventure games rallied behind Stacked...

copy-pasto'd from the "What are you playing?" thread:

Trenched is currently my main interest. As usual, I am happy to have given Double Fine some money to keep me laughing and sufficiently challenged in genres where I'm otherwise not usually interested. Personally, I can't stand Tower Defense, though I found "Hero Defense" in Army of Darkness Defense (iOS) to be plenty compelling. Although I will say one of my friends is a hardcore Tower-D fan, and he thinks Trenched is great.

I need to find some other bore-players with whom to tag-team; apparently the most recent players you've co-op'd with are a "Regiment," and provide unlock boosts for each other even when not playing together. Kind of an "ad hoc clan." Pretty slick. I played a game with a random online partner yesterday morning; when I arrived home last night, I had new Regiment Progress unlocks from him. These are just a set of tallies measured across our entire group progress, unlocking stuff for each other. If you play singleplayer only, these tallies are still collected for your "regiment of one," but it's going to be slower progress.
