A week after discounting its older PSP-3000 models to $129.99, Sony has cut the MSRP for its UMD-less, digital download-focused PSP Go by $50 to $149.99 in North America.

Major retailers haven't yet updated their listings to reflect the new price, notes consumer site Joystiq, which first reported the markdown, but Sony Computer Entertainment America has updated its official PSP site to read, "Now you can enjoy the sleek, totally-digital PSP Go system for $149.99 MSRP and the unsurpassed PSP-3000 system for $129.99 MSRP."

Still too much for a system that will likely be replaced by a fully BC system in less than a year.

They will this Sunday. The core's going down to $130 and the bundle is $160. Still a little too pricey if you ask me. I think they should've gone to $99.

There are a handful of games I want on PSP, as well as using it to clear out my PS1 backlog. But it's still too much. This system came out SIX YEARS AGO.

Is the PSPGo modifiable yet?

I don't really want to pirate anything, but I dislike playing my GTA at a choking framerate. Sho Nuff showed me the glory of jailbreaking the CPU speed, and the damned things looked like they were running on a full PS2. I want that.

It's not a big deal.  The original patapon method was a bit annoying, but since all that ps3 crack business, it takes two seconds to run the enabler.

And from what I understand, changing the cpu speed isn't working for firmware past 6.20, but since you can downgrade and most psp go come with 5.7, it's not really an issue.

PSP Go is pretty cool.  Right now I'm actually playing Ys Oath on my TV using my old ps3 controller.

UPDATED: Reports from Japan suggest that time has been called on digital-only PSP model

It's been a difficult life for Sony's UMD-free, digital only PSPgo. But reports are now suggesting that time has finally been called on the model.

Andriasang has translated a report that, in its words, "appears to be run by a Sony Shop employee or at the very least a super hardcore Sony fanatic". It claims that production of the unit has been cancelled and that no more shipments are being sent out to retail.

The news follows the recent removal of the PSPgo from the Japanese Sony Store, though the device still appears on the UK portal.

Sony's successor to the PSP, the Next Generation Portable, is due out in at least one territory before the end of the year.

SCE UK has told MCV it is investigating the situation.

UPDATE: Sony has supplied MCV with the following statement, which appears to suggest the PSPgo lives on, though falls short of explicitly confirming that.

"It is a very exciting time for PlayStation portable devices. Before the end of the year we are launching NGP, our next generation portable device, which we believe will revolutionise portable gaming.

"In the meantime, the current generation of PSPs continue to be in demand, especially since the introduction of our value for money, Essentials range of games and we will continue to meet that demand."

The PSPgo is pretty awesome, especially at the right price. Picked one up for $99 and haven't regret it since.  Especially now with CFW basically filling in the niche of games that never made it on PSN.

Plus all of my digital purchases are ready to transfer over to the NGP whenever 10 years later when I can finally afford a NGP.  :-[

more like PSP WENT amirite?

Now I think I may actually buy one, if there's an easy way to get my UMD games onto it. Is there?

find someone with a CFW PSP with umd.

or torrent same game and place on GO.

*both answers assumes you have CFW on the GO*

Thanks. I'll just assume that CFW on the Go is as trivial to come by as torrented ISOs. I've never done either, but there's no denying the Go is sexier than its UMD-necessitating cousin.

BTW, lots of sites are now reporting that Sony officially announced the PSP Go has ceased production, to focus on NGP production and PSP 3000.
