Getting cat: tips?
« on: March 06, 2011, 10:02:03 AM »
What's a good breed? I'd love a traditional Siamese, preferably white or gray but that's probably too vocal for a first cat.

I want an active, playful and yet solitary cat. Nothing too needy but one that can be a sweetheart. I'm not interested in a kitten because my place isn't kitten proof. One year old would be the sweet spot.

I'm considering getting two cats, preferably ones that are already friends because who knows when I'll be out? They'll have each others good company in the mean time.

I've been considering getting a couple of cats as well.  My only problem is that my bathroom is attached to my bedroom.  I wouldn't want to deprive access to the litter box when I'm sleeping at night.

Don't become a cat lady man.

Getting any pet is the end of your independence, think carefully man.
Cats aren't as high maintenance as dogs. If you plan well, you can still do things like go on vacations and such, without a big problem.

I've got a cat. She's awesome and we can still do whatever we want whenever we want.

Go to your local shelter and check out the adult cats. Pick one you like.

Plan on getting it sprayed? Sucks waking up in the middle of the night hearing your cat moaning. So either buy one sprayed, get it done immediately after purchase, or invest in q-tips

I'd love a dog, but dogs are too high maintenance and are big babies. it's not what i want right now. they ALWAYS want attention. a cat craves attention and lives by it but has the understanding and mental know how to be solitary. You can't fucking hope a dog can poop and pee on its own. You have to take it outside. A cat can just go in its box and you empty it out daily.

i see nothing wrong with men who like and own cats. a cat would really fit with my life style right now and I just want to have some furry friends over the years. When I'm in inclined I'll add a corgi to the line up.

I have 2 cats and a dog.  One cat is slightly psychotic, the other is the sweetest cat in the world.  The main thing to think about is whether the cat will be an indoor or outdoor cat.  If you want an indoor cat it might help to adopt a kitten, if you adopt an adult cat who was an outdoor cat and they can't go out anymore they'll be pissed.

indoors for me. What if I go for an indoor adult cat?

There's nothing wrong with getting kittens whatsoever.  Just make sure they have a clean litter box, a corragorated piece of cardboard with catnip rubbed in for scratching, food/water, and give it some playful attention.  No destruction, no shitstains, its like they are born housebroken.  After a few months you can let them start going outside and then they'll leave you alone for most of the day and come back when they need affection/food.  Dogs on the other hand are vile disgusting distinguished mentally-challenged fellows who can't take the hint you want them to shit outside and not chew all the tv cables and whatnot.

Getting two kittens sounds good I guess. It seems like it'd be easier to train them as opposed to an adult cat who is used to somethin else entirely.

Where is a good place to put litter boxes and cat beds and scratch posts and trees?

persians suck and are ugly... there are so many cuter longhaired cats, i don't know why persians have always been so popular.

yoshi's hair isn't too bad to deal with actually. we NEVER brush him and he still looks good and gets very minimal small knots on his belly sometimes. he sheds the most in the spring time.

but if long hair is a deal breaker for you then you are truly missing out on the best cat breed ever!

The fact that Persians are the most popular cat confuses me.

at least the most popular dog breed, the labrador retriever, is a nice looking dog.

this:

ugly, ugly, ugly.

i think there are still a lot of people who actually believe the persian is a "luxurious" cat to own.

What's great about siberians?

siberians have a great demeanor. we got the chance to get to know a whole mess of siberians through yoshi's breeder (they have 7 of them alone). they are super friendly yet really chill and not afraid of strangers. kind of like most dogs, they just really love people and they love to be shown attention and affection. they're also really adorable cats with very expressive faces. when yoshi is feeling a certain way i can see it in his expression (our other cat, minu, is mostly expressionless).

we were skeptical about getting a purebred cat until we saw an ad with yoshi's pictures and made an appointment to go and see the breeders' place. just getting to know yoshi and the other cats, his father and mother, brothers and sisters, convinced us that the siberian was the right cat for us. they are just amazingly loveable cats.

sounds like a great cat and just what I want. the problem being that siberians seem rare, and I don't want to take up with a breeder because breeders = $$$. On top of this, I want to get TWO cats.

how vocal are they? And how bad is the fur during shedding season? That's the main reason I am more interested in shorthairs.

adopting any purebred cat is going to be near impossible. you don't find many cats that people have paid $1000 plus for in shelters (read: purebreds, and that includes siamese).

you can likely find a siamese mix in a shelter, but a purebred siamese? i doubt it. there might be some nearby siamese rescue groups you could look at, which would be your best bet if you are hell bent on getting a pure bred siamese for cheap. 99% of the time they won't have a family tree for the cat though. you can't actually be sure you're getting a purebred anything unless you have a family tree:

(yoshi's)

oh, and don't pay ANYTHING EXTRA, ever, for a supposedly "purebred" cat without a family tree stamped by a breed registry. a lot of people will try to money grab by claiming the cat is "half-siamese" or "purebred siamese" and then say there is no family tree or that it was lost. they'll charge extra for the cat, but ultimately you don't know what you're getting.

My father wonders why I want to own a cat. I guess it's weird your currently single mid 20's son wants to own a cat or something? Sigh.

I don't live at home anymore but we definitely have a difference in how we treat pets. When I was young, I was never attached to any of my dogs because they always lived outside since my parents didn't want them inside. All except one puppy, who lived inside with us for the most of his life before we put him outside. My father thinks animals belong outside, because hey, that's how they've always lived right?! Whereas I think pets deserve a place in the family unit and should live inside. He considers it a "white" thing to let your pets live inside, haha.

Between college and living with people who are scared as shit of animals it's no wonder it has taken me so long to get a new pet haha.

I don't see what's wrong with asking. I have no problem with shedding, I just wanted to know how one deals with it. Researching it, feeding the cat really healthy foods results in less shedding and brushing at least once a week, vacuuming and lint rollers does the trick. Those I knew about, but the food thing was pretty new information for me.

Any good vacuums or accessories specifically for animal fur?

I had a single friend who bought a cat.  At first she said it's just because it was cute and she wanted a pet.  Now it's her facebook picture and when we're out she says she misses her cat and she leaves early to take care of it.

In conclusion, cats for young single people are bad.
