Cloud Saving now available for PSN+ members

Well, looks like I'm subscribing now.  Lost tons of saves when my first PS3 died.  Don't want to go through that again.

I posted about this in the random gaming talk thread 25 seconds ago!

yeah, it's a cool feature.  If I knew how much Playstation plus cost, I might go for it.  probably not, but maybe.  15 months for $50 doesn't seem too bad.

Same  :'(

I was thinking about it anyway since the deals seem pretty decent, this pretty much confirms my subscription

150MBs space is a bit low, but good feature nonetheless. I can finally say with a straight face that I got my money's worth out of this, even if it's a glorified rental service, as it's still the cheapest one I know!

I'm also glad that you get to keep items bought at PS+ discounted prices.

Yeah, even if most of game saves range between 5-10MBs you'll only be able to back-up 30 to 15 games only. On one hand that's a pretty low number, on the other the PS3 doesn't have that many games that are worth playing.

Well, they've put in a natural barrier by making you have to copy every savefile manually instead of performing some sort of automated backup. hehe

I thought there was an option to perform a complete automated back up from the settings menu, something about being able to change the location to the cloud? I could be wrong though. I guess I'll see for myself.

Haha yeah, I just updated the OS and couldn't find anything of the sort. They're treating it the same way they treat backups to flash storages. It's baffling that you still can't opt to transfer all saves to either of those solutions with one click. Backing up saves from my previous PS3 to a flash, one by one, was slow and tedious.

On other new, Demon's Souls' save file, the only one worth saving, is only 3MB big.

To be fair, XBL has limited cloud saving with certain XBLA titles, such as Castle Crashers, but nothing as wide spread as Sony's initiative.  Cloud save backup would be the more accurate term, as you can't save to the cloud on the fly.

They stated that future titles can implement direct saving to the cloud as an option. I really hope they reconsider the cap if this thing takes off.

Kinda weird that MS, with all their emphasis on Live anywhere and the how they talk about the cloud at the other MS divisions, that the gaming and electronic devices division seems so far behind.

For all we know Cloud saves couldd be coming later this year along with bigger friends lists.
Wouldn't we have heard rumors by now, though?  The Xbox team isn't exactly tight lipped.

What was the last meaningful* dashboard update? It's been a while since they rolled out something worthwhile, so they better have something good* in store.

*Kinect crap notwithstanding.

Cloud saving would be awesome.  When my last XBox hard drive crapped out I lost all my saves :'(
That would suck. Even before USB support, I was backing up save data files to the 512MB Memory Unit. Of course, a couple times I managed to screw things up by copying the wrong direction. Old copy went over the new, because the Xbox didn't properly identify which one was older and warn me about it.

To be fair, XBL has limited cloud saving with certain XBLA titles, such as Castle Crashers, but nothing as wide spread as Sony's initiative.  Cloud save backup would be the more accurate term, as you can't save to the cloud on the fly.
Original Lips saved all the players' accumulated Badge and Star progress on the servers. It didn't save how many Challenges you'd completed, though. It was nice, but for some reason they didn't carry the feature or the accumulated game progress, forward into its pseudo-sequels like Number One Hits.

It would be really sharp if XBL users could opt into a background process backup feature, perhaps managed in the same area where users Install the game to HDD, etc.

:lol UPDATE.... Good one. But tbh, after my initial post of glee I did my research (and read this thread) and decided it was another good idea with bad implementation and not worth my money. SONY YEAAAAAH. I just chucked an SD card in my PS3 instead and go through the same process. Once they have higher capacity and software running it that isn't total shite I will look again. Until then, smh.

Nah, it was a Kinect thing (released in conjunction with Kinect launch), like the old one except it had this wannabe apple flair except with sharp edges and no shading. Eye searing.

You mean: how about automatically backing up all saves or save syncing, Sony? I mean I wish they'd polish some of the half-hearted features they implement before moving on to the next thing.

And I agree, NXE + game installs is still the biggest OS improvement of the generation.

What's up with the 150mb limit too? Storage is insanely cheap. Why the fuck are they skimping?! And how hard can an automatic sync be? Even if you have to establish what files you wanted tracked initially it's then simple to check if it's since been modified. I mean I'm not impressed with MS's software for 360 considering they've been in the biz so long, but Sony. Jebus. Outside of games, Playstation division really really suck at making software that measures up by todays standards. Am dissapoint  >:(

It's all theoretical, bro.  Nice feature but what's the point when there aren't games to play?

so, is playstation plus worth it? I got an email saying that 12+3 month deal was ending on the 29th.  I'm more interested in beta, demos, discounts and "free" game access.  Is it worth it for that stuff?

Is stacking still "free"?

If you really :heartbeat your playstation then I guess so. I think I'd end up racking up a bunch of 'free' games I wouldn't play. There's still not very many potentially good features outside of this badly implemented cloud storage, automatic updating and deals on games is there? Unless you're really into the games the value of the service seems pretty low to me...

Stacking isn't free anymore and at this point I dunno.  I don't think it's worth it yet.  You're paying for potential.  I kind of regret signing up for Stacking every 2 weeks when there's an update with nothing good, but hopefully I'll change my mind in a year.

Since i signed up for stacking (2 months ago) here is what I have gotten in return:
-Stacking - cool, worth $15
-Sonic 1 - zzz, a rom, I already own this in 15 formats or something by now
-Digger HD - haven't really played it but I don't think I ever would
-Pix n' Rush mini - pretty good.  Would have paid $3
-Enigma mini - haven't played, no interest
-Some ghetto golf mini - will never play
-Some ghetto sparta mini- will never play
-Sonic PS3 theme - lol
-Chinese new year ps3 theme not bad
-Street Fighter avatars - I wouldn't have bought avatars, but ok I'll take some for free
-Mortal Kombat early demo - could have waited, but good I guess
-Socom 4 MP Beta - eh, downloaded it but I never play multi games and I never play betas so probably won't touch this
-Spyro the Dragon 2 iso image - cool, but I'll never play it
-Spyro the Dragon 3 iso image - eh, will never play

And there's also a bunch of 1 hour full game trials, but it's either for really old stuff everyone has played (Prince of Persia 2008, AC2), or is ridiculously huge download (I would like to have tried Mod nation racers but it was TEN GIGS) or stuff no one cares about (Mag).

It might look like a lot, but it's mainly crap.  Service has been worth maybe $20 to me so far.  Will it be worth the other $30 in the remaining 13 months?  Statistically speaking probably.  But with Sony management you never know.  I've started holding off buying all PSN games/DLC in hopes it will at least be discounted or at best be free to psn+ members.  Would be nice if Bionic Rearmed 2 or Contra Uprising became either.  But I get the feeling that the discounts and free stuff are either first party games or small stuff no one buys.  I have a feeling the big games will never touch PSN+.

An unfortunate, counter productive side effect for the service. To get the most bang for your buck you should probably stop buying games  :spin

Otherwise if you buy the games you want then all you get for free are the shitty games you purposely didn't want or games you already own and the service is worthless :P

It's a lame situation.

Today's update added:
Comet Crash - I've heard of this before, maybe it will actually be worth a couple of bucks to the service.
2 more minis that I'll never play
