I consider myself to be a hardcore RPG'r, i have 2 wii's one for Aussie games and another for US games RPG games. YET NONE OF THE RPGS I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO ARE BEING RELEASED IN ENGLISH.

None of those games have a chance fo getting released here, i would have been happy with those 3. I am NEVER going to buy a Nintendo console again unles a third party releases the game i want and never in anticipation of any game. Fuck Nintendo.

I know that if you take care of your consumer you can make even more money because people become happy with your product and word of mouth spreads. Nintendo sort of got this memo with the 3ds GDC speech but they went the wrong direction of how they achieve it.

Nintendo give the least of a shit about "actual gamers" out of all 3 console manufacturers. Sony pumps heaps of dough into AAA game development and M$ still fund a few exclusives, and have the best variety of downloadable games on their system. There's also just the straightforward fact that with mario sports, you have to translate maybe 500-1,000 lines of text whereas an rpg might have 200,000 lines to translate. Much more expensive and time consuming. But yeah, the VA costs are a huge part.

Probably a stupid question, but why don't they do the translation as they're making the game? assuming there is a chance it will release in the western market, wouldn't it just be easier? it seems now like there is the finished Japanese game, and then a group has to translate the whole thing, and then they release it.

I'm severely underestimating translators/localizers here, I know.

This is feasible but very, very rare. The reason being that most teams keep changing stuff until the minute and do not know the definition of the term "text lock." This also drives the Japanese sound teams crazy because they have to have the actors come back for pickup lines.

When people DO attempt this it usually involves a ton of wasted/thrown away work, since they decide the 30 side quests with 1,000 translated words aren't fun at the last minute and should be just cut after some poor translator slogged through the whole thing (and got paid for it, too).

The larger the project is, the more of a nightmare it is to keep everything in sync. It's totally doable for small games like Tekken. (Well, the old Tekkens, not the new one with the 10 hours of cutscenes and the distinguished mentally-challenged 100,000-word story mode script)

It is very, very difficult to get a game greenlit for US distro if you do not have an English voice track, even if the weeaboo population is screaming to keep Jonny Yong Bosch out of it and keep the original Japanese voices. Remember that those people are a very vocal minority.

I haven't been following it lately, but I was wondering if any medium to high-profile games have slipped through with only subtitle tracks (aside from Yakuza).

Nintendo isn't localizing those RPGs because, sales wise, console RPGs are dead this generation, and they'll never again be the mass market darlings they were in the previous generations. You, and perhaps the nerds across town who have Secret of Mana LAN parties every weekend, are among the very few individuals who'd even contemplate buying those games.

Why would they? They understand the weaknesses and strengths of their own machines. The Wii, for the most part, is an utter failure in terms of promoting and selling certain hardcore titles, and those jRPGs fall under that category. The existence of those games is merely a manifestation of a token effort by Nintendo to reestablish their presence in a now-antiquated subgenre that has failed to make a sliver of a mark this generation.

The question shouldn't be why isn't Nintendo bringing these games out of Japan; the question is why are they making/publishing these games for the Wii in the first place?

Now tell me, could it be their lack of success there has informed them about what the available market is for such games? So, say, as a profit driven corporation, and NOA being subservient to NCL above all else, what initiative would there be for the american branch to market and distribute guaranteed bombs like Xenoblade? I know someone is going to retort with, "wHO cares, its about what IIIIIII WANNNNTTTTTTT". Grow up and gain some fucking perspective of how the world works. Hardcore games sell like shit no matter what platform they're on. Death Smiles is Cave's most successful game of all time and it's probably only sold 100k worldwide.

People want just want to press buttons and watch an epic oscar worthy story unfold. Or play fitness games.

Well, fansubbing an anime is a LOT easier than translating a game. First off, the amount of dialogue in an RPG is ridiculous, not only do you have all the different dialogues, but you also have item descriptions, bestiaries, etc. Then, you need to figure out how to hack the text into the game... which could be extremely tricky. Especially if the game is using an obscure compression scheme. Lots of games need custom tools to insert/remove pieces of the script.

Oh wow, another post by Emceegrammar where he sticks up for Nintendo. Yay, Nintendo's got great business sense, it doesn't matter who they are screwing over as long as Nintendo makes money! That's the worst kind of Nintendo fanboy. Maybe if Nintendo catered to enthusiast gamers a bit more, and tried to make a viable ecosystem for third party/hardcore games, the Wii would be more than a few decent first party games and tons upon tons of Zumba games and waggleshit.

Look at a company like Atlus, they may not be making money hand over fist, but at least they are turning a profit, releasing niche and enthusiast games. They nurtured a fanbase successfully without screwing them over.

Awesome. I hope this is as good as it's been hyped up to be. But then again, I think I've seen people compare it to FFXII, so I'll keep my expectations in check.
