Official Thread of NFL Work Stoppage

Unable to decide how to divvy up $9 billion a year, NFL owners and players put the country's most popular sport in limbo Friday by breaking off labor negotiations hours before their contract expired.

The union decertified, and 10 players, including MVP quarterbacks Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, sued the owners in federal court, putting the NFL on a path to its first work stoppage since 1987.

The NFL will announce a lockout, starting at midnight Friday, league sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Despite two extensions to the collective bargaining agreement during 16 days of talks overseen by a federal mediator -- and previous months of stop-and-start negotiating -- the sides could not agree on a new deal. The league said it hadn't decided as of Friday evening whether to lock out the players, who, meanwhile, went to court to request an injunction to block such a move.

Billions wanting millionaires to give up more rights/money. The players will eventually crawl back considering they have more to lose in the short term

What exactly about the NFL's situation bothers the owners so much that they need major changes?  The record TV ratings and massive revenues?  The almost automatic public funding for their stadiums when they ask?  The dominant position in the American sports hierarchy?  The constantly growing franchise values that guarantee no owner ever loses out on his investment?

So pointless.

Bengals players are probably thinking, "We weren't going to show up anyway...."  :lol

Is there a place where somebody could send the NFL and the players this message?

Calendar saying it's March = hockey stretch drive is the only thing that matters right now

and I haven't been following this, but isn't the panic a bit premature? I mean any kind of lockout is bad, but they still have months to work things out without missing any part of the season. The NHL lockout six years ago was announced on the eve of the season starting, so that was good reason to feel like the whole thing had gone to shit, but this situation doesn't seem anywhere near as dire.

The problem is that it's been going on for months with absolutely nothing getting done. Now the whole thing has collapsed and players are suing the league. No, not the end of the world [or football], but it certainly doesn't look good.

I was listening to the local ESPN affiliate this afternoon, and people were calling in saying that the Cowboys should get rid of Tony Romo because he's too much of a diva and get Vince Young and Cam Newton instead.  :derp

“I didn’t touch her,” Haynesworth said, according to documents.  He also explained that he doesn’t “even like black girls.”

“I know what this is about, she is just upset I have a white girlfriend,” Haynesworth reportedly told detectives.  “I couldn’t tell you the last time I dated a black girl.  She was trying to get with me.”

:lol Why does Albert Haynesworth still have a job? :lol

Oh wait, I forgot, because of Danny Snyder. :teehee

Giants get Prince, damn nice steal. Didn't expect him to fall that far.

I think Newton could be good in the right situation. The Panthers don't really have many weapons for him to use, so he'll be beat up and criticized for a couple seasons. If management can turn the team around I think he'll work out

Lions could be scary...too bad they are the Lions! Saints made a good move IMO w/Ingram, now they need to stack up on D.

Our insane DL will make the secondary look better, but the secondary still sucks. If we can get a solid DT or corner, I'll be happy. Hence the frustration with that WR pick, considering Brandon Harris and some other nice choices were available.

Sounds like Young is a good player, and could definitely open up the field for Stafford/take pressure off Calvin Johnson...but I wanted three defensive picks in a row.

Ingram is a beast, if he stays healthy he'll do very well in NO

I like the basic idea of the pick: get an RB that gives us a solid 1-2 punch of strength (draft pick) and quickness (Best). But why here? And why trade so much to get this guy. The Lions must be in love with him. I remember him dicing Michigan last season, but iirc that game was like 67-65 or some shit, there was no defense on either side.

I have a bad feeling we're going to look back on this draft and get depressed, outside of the Fairley pick

Perfect situation for Mallet. He has a chance to be very, very good learning behind Brady and Bellicheck.
