I have turned the corner on the ribbon.
Well not the ribbon so much but Office 2010

We're moving offices next week, which means moving our databases to a new server. I was shitty myself at having to re-link hundreds of pivot tables linked to csv outputs. Started tinkering around in Office 2010 (coming from 2003

), go connection -> properties -> change directory of connection to current directory -> DONE.
Absolutely flawless, everything relinked with the right filters and formatting. Plus there's a button saying "REFRESH ALL", which means my macro for removing ghost items in 2003 is not needed. I am stunned at how awesome it is. I still cant work out how to link new csv's, I keep getting an error saying "that format cannot be used to create a pivot table", but for now I'm overjoyed.
