It's not as good as letting you use a User Name, but it's no longer the most annoying online system ever devised.

No, of course we can, but if you want to play me when we're both online at the same time, there's no way to send a notification that you want to me play.  No messaging/invites.  It's distinguished mentally-challenged.  You have to just host a friends match and hope that someone on your friends list checks that mode.  It's stupid as hell and it's all Nintendumb standard.

Well because you used a very popular argument among Nintendo's fans. This isn't a phone that must adhere to certain telecommunication protocols in order to function, it's tied to an internet service like thousands of others. Comparing it to a phone, saying people are used to it and whatnot, is plain stupid because it's not a phone. It's cumbersome, backwards, and a testament to how little Nintendo care sometimes about their customers' convenience. They should be adapting to our likings instead of the other way around. Seriously, there's no defending this, the least any sane person could do is admit that, while it's less stupid than per-game codes, is still incredibly stupid but "I'll try and live with it."

On the other hand, if I was someone who never touched a non-Nintendo online-capable device, of course I'll laud it a giant step forward and have no complaints.

My original point was that the entire population living in the industrial world has experience with phone numbers.  To them this would not be some alien, cumbersome concept as was implied.  Right now, the problem is that you can't do a whole lot with a 3ds 'number' in terms of messaging, invites, etc. so there's not much incentive to register each other.  Otherwise, the system itself is just replacing gamertag with numberstring and one distinct caveat.   Right now people seem angry that they can't leave their code on a message board post and expect it to register without another person doing the same.  The two handshake procedure is probably Nintendo's idea of pedophile deterrent or some shit, I dunno.

And like I said, don't group me with the likes of BrandNew and whatnot, they make me mad at times too!

And my personal point is: the fact that you don't see anything wrong with it is part of the problem. In this day and age, communicating online using anything but user picked handles is alien and cumbersome. I shouldn't be looking my number up every time I want to add a remote person, and no I don't view relying on specific fields in my forum profile is an elegant solution. You wanna know what convenience looks like? being discoverable under the name "Khan" on steam, PSN, LIVE, gmail, yahoo, iTunes, Twitter, facebook, internet forums and almost every Internet service you can think of. (Can you imagine if all of those services asked me to use a different 12 digit number? *shudder*)

Now I don't know about you, but I don't think Nintendo's precious service is more special than any of those that it deserves a pass, but oh well, what's done is done, and I'm gonna have to deal with it, but people have to deal with me expressing my extreme distaste every chance I get as well.

...

anyway, I'm not referring to what I want, i'm just saying this isn't a huge detrimental thing that people irl have no experience with.  The value of the friend code to nintendo is that it takes the responsibility out of their hands when it comes to: communication between players and 'vulgar' tags.  With the exception of Mariokart cheaters, nintendo has attempted to intervene as little as possible when it comes to the matter of policing their online realm.  I imagine they will continue to develop this idea of a low maintainence online infrastructure.

No, I have to say that "huge detrimental thing" is pretty apt here. It's enough of a pain in the ass that Nintendo's online is virtually nonexistent to me, which is fine for me personally seeing as I didn't buy a Wii or DS for their online offerings, but it still leaves me scratching my head that they refuse to join the rest of us in the 21st century and leave behind the requirement of memorizing and exchanging really really really long strings of numbers to play a game or two with a friend

And I don't think anyone is trying to argue that this ultimately boils down to what's most convenient for Nintendo. That's precisely why there's so much nerd rancor flying around, and it's one of the rare occasions where I feel like it's not a case of the customer being a self-entitled twat

I'm honestly more amused with all this than anything. Not trying to be a dick!
