It's really bothersome when companies make knee-jerk decisions like this. I can imagine that there would have been social backlash if they'd chosen to publish it now, but what about putting it aside for a season?
After 9/11 people were talking like terrorist-themed fiction would never be done again, because it would hit too close to home. Collateral Damage was shelved. Fast-forward a year, and it's one of the main genres.
