So I was coming out of my interview to see the main strip of downtown closed off because some Privileged Fools are protesting a hike in tuition fees. Now, Montreal is popular to people from other countries because of its incredibly low tuition rate and because Mcgill is an extremely reputable school. But a year will cost you like 3,000$. Here's a quote.

That's half of what I pay and i feel like I pay hardly anything.

I think it goes to show that student protests are generally just in it for the protesting and not for a real cause.

Quebec students rioting over tuition increases is absurd.

They've always had the lowest tuition in the country.

UofT tuition for this year is $5200.

I paid more than these people for community college, much less a degree that means anything.

And the female protesters probably were wearing lotsa clothes too, because it's probably cold as shit there.

Last year, I was talking to this girl from one of my lit classes after a section meeting. Some of the people from our section hang out after to talk to the TA at a cafe campus that has nomnom soup. So we're chatting about our hometowns and our essays and I'm slurping soup, but our TA is a major fight authority socialist rise of the soviets sorta guy and so we eventually start talking about the protest planned later that week. I am not really that into it but she's planning on going. She asks me how I feel about protests and I tell her I am not sure anything ever comes of them. Then she leans in and looks at my eyes, asking "How do you feel about making friendships at a protest?"

The reason Quebecs tuition is as low as it is is BECAUSE the people there are vigilant and willing to make noise. The Quebecois don't need to look to other provinces and chill out, other provinces should be looking towards them.

While it's fun to prick people's self-righteous bubbles by comparing their grievances to the suffering that goes on in third-world countries, it's not really fair. "You're not a starving orphan in the middle of a civil war, so quit yer bitching" sets the bar a bit high, IMO.
