So, what do you guys think of the gameboy Mario games?

When I was younger, I tried out the first Super Mario Land game. At the time, I wasn't really a fan of the lack of colors on the GB screen, and it was noticeably off from the real Mario games. So I never really got into them. But recently I've been getting a hankerin to try them out again.

So are they any good?

I always really liked Super Mario Land 2.

SML1: Fun game, felt like a spin-off based on SMB1.  The mechanics always seemed a little off though.

SML2: Similar to the original, this felt like a spin-off based on SMB3, but with new power-ups/level design.  I really enjoyed it the first time through, but never felt like replaying the game once I beat it.  It's the only 8-bit Mario that felt that way to me.

SML3: Warioland!  Cool idea; a bit too easy, but fun.

After SML3, I lost interest in most of the other Wario titles.  They all felt too similar to one another.

Super Mario Land - Pretty fun but forgettable

Super Mario Land 2 - Amazing game.  A little too easy and it was pretty short.  Still, a fun game to play.

Wario Land - Not a fan.  Everything seemed bland.

Wario Land 2 - Amazing game.  A very creative departure from the usual Mario fare.

Wario Land 3 - Goes even further out from the conventions to mixed results.

Wario Land 4 - Not very fun.  Just kind of felt half assed, like they felt obligated to put out _something_

I probably beat Super Mario Land 2 a dozen times on various family vacations as a kid. It was fun.

Did you guys ever play the game boy color remix of SMB for NES? I think it was called SMB DX?

It was pretty good. I remember a magazine printing out the entire layout of the levels and i thought that was sick.

Otherwise the best GB game will be SML2

It had issues with the screen size...you couldn't see the whole screen like you could in the NES version.  But it was still awesome, and it had the entire Japanese SMB2 (The Lost Levels) available too.  I ditched it when they released SMB1 and SMB2J for GBA though.

SML1 - the sprites are tiny,jumping feels weird (like you are playing on mars gravity) but otherwise it's a decent game,some stage are shooters which is pretty weird for a mario game,it also features some kickass bonus music

SML2 - i like it a lot,the levels are pretty weird,there is a giant house where you fight ants,a horror themed pumpkin,a sunken ship,a giant robo mario and at a certain point you float to the moon inside a giant bubble,it's kind of an underated game if you ask me

Wario Land - not as crazy as super mario land 2,and feels a little slow compared to mario but it features lot of hidden secret and stuff and kickass music

Wario Land 3 - this one is pretty peculiar for two reason,the first is that you can't die whatsoever,instead when an enemy hits you,you get inflicted by a status which usualy force you to go back for a reason or other,for example you might encounter a zombie enemy and if you get hit by it,you turn into a zombie but zombie can't jump so you need to go back to unzombie yourself,or one of the enemy hits you and force wario to turn into a spring which automaticaly make him jump inside the exit,it's quite unique and sometimes you are forced to get hit yourself to go trough the level

the second thing that makes the game unique is that there is no order to the level,each level has 4 items and each item just open a new section of level,like you might encounter a owl in level 3,4 and 6 but he does nothing but after you find the sun,the owl awake and now you can ride him to find new stuff,it's not exactly like metroid but it's still pretty cool

SML - Eh... I couldnt replay this today

SML2 - Classic, though I couldnt see myself replaying it again

Wario Land - I loved this game when I played it, and all the secrets thisgame had

I never got to play WL2 and 3, but I did try it on an emulator (Lameboy for DS), but I kind of lost interest. I keep them on there for those off-chances I get the itch to play it.

WL4 was pretty fun though.
