I can't load half the web pages today!
« on: April 11, 2011, 08:16:02 PM »
Half the sites I go to has "The connection was reset" when I try to access it. Pissing me off. I tried connecting directly to my modem and everything and it still does the same damn thing. Anyone got any ideas?

I got this problem too, random sites at random times can't be connected with. Are you using Chrome by any chance?

The internet needs to be rebooted.

Still at the library because my Internet is still down. I either get a server not found message or a Comcat xfinity page asking me to put in an account number to authenticate access. Dunno wtf is up

Buy it, use it, break it, fix it,
Trash it, change it, mail - upgrade it,
Charge it, pawn it, zoom it, press it,
Snap it, work it, quick - erase it,
Write it, cut it, paste it, save it,
Load it, check it, quick - rewrite it,
Plug it, play it, burn it, rip it,
Drag and drop it, zip - unzip it,

if you can't ping by host then its a dns problem but tbh you shouldnt be using default isp dns anyway. opendns is better

If you're using Avast Anti-virus, that's why. Uninstall that shit and throw AVG on.

I used to use AVG but find Avast has less of a footprint

As much as I am an anti-MS fantard I'd still recommend MSE.

Small footprint, rather accurate, free, no everything and the kitchensink idiocy. It does what it needs to do, stays out of your fucking sight as much as possible and hey, did I mention it's free?

Might want to disable the spynet stuff if you're a hardcore paranoid tinfoil hat wielder, but that's only a single registry entry.

also I recently uninstalled MSE. It wasn't bad but maybe I liked Avira better? I don't remember having any problems with Avira, gonna reinstall that.

Still can't connect. Tried dns flush, register dns, rebooted router and modem etc. Server not found. Second time this month I've completely lost Internet, although last time it came back in the morning. I'll have to find the account number and call Comcast

can you ping websites by their hostname
like go to run > cmd > ping www.google.com?
does it return 4 replies or say host is unreachable?
if the latter try pinging it's ip address: 74.125.113.105
if that pings and the host does not then try setting you dns manually.
you can use opendns
primary: 228.67.222.222, alternative is 228.67.220.220. if you dont know how to set your dns servers manually, google it.

A nice command line tool for checking DNS entries is nslookup.

nslookup hostname

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Code: [Select]
C:\Users\Corporal>nslookup www.google.com
Server:  fritz.box
Address:  10.0.0.254

Non-authoritative answer:
Name:    www.l.google.com
Addresses:  209.85.149.103
          209.85.149.105
          209.85.149.147
          209.85.149.104
          209.85.149.106
          209.85.149.99
Aliases:  www.google.com
You can supply your own DNS to cross-check.

nslookup hostname DNS_IP
Code: [Select]
C:\Users\Corporal>nslookup www.google.com 8.8.8.8
Server:  google-public-dns-a.google.com
Address:  8.8.8.8

Non-authoritative answer:
Name:    www.l.google.com
Addresses:  209.85.148.147
          209.85.148.106
          209.85.148.99
          209.85.148.104
          209.85.148.103
          209.85.148.105
Aliases:  www.google.com

This will not always give you the same numbers, especially in googles case:
Code: [Select]
C:\Users\Corporal>nslookup www.google.com 4.2.2.1
Server:  vnsc-pri.sys.gtei.net
Address:  4.2.2.1

Non-authoritative answer:
Name:    www.l.google.com
Addresses:  74.125.43.105
          74.125.43.106
          74.125.43.147
          74.125.43.99
          74.125.43.103
          74.125.43.104
Aliases:  www.google.com
[close]
Make a list of sites that give you trouble and check them via http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/ then run them through nslookup.

If DNS checks out alright then tracert those fuckers. Maybe some router on the way is dropping packets?

tracert hostname

This will send pings to every system your packet runs through, a star means "no response", so that host might be the one to eat your packets. Or maybe it's just configured to disregard pings. Still, worth a try.

Your ISP might be running a transparent proxy that's breaking down. Check your settings and maybe use TOR or a VPN to the "outside" to compare.

That's all I can think of before my first cup of coffee in the morning.

After hours of trying, it's finally back up. For some reason when I turned my firewall off, I'd constantly get the Comcast authentication screen. So I put in an account number (took forever to get a Comcast rep to give it to me), downloaded, etc done. This is the second time I've had a problem where that screen would come up. Whenever my internet is down, I refresh my router; if that doesn't work I unplug it or the modem. Is it possible those things can fuck up Comcast and require you to re-download their shit? Dunno

(i put the firewall back on obviously)
