...honestly, what TV series or movie would make an undeniably awesome game?

I remember when Namco picked up the "Snake Plissken license," and they were apparently making an Escape from New York movie, I was super excited. Then it was canceled, and I was all:

Today the Big Trouble in Little China movie was playing on a workstation near my own, and I thought "MAN, that would be a kick ass game!" It wouldn't really work with the Telltale Games style of point-and-click, though. It would have to be some kind of action/platformer, and to be truly interesting, you'd probably have to play someone other than Jack... since he's only got lucky reflexes.

So which license would you like to see adapted, and what genre of gameplay would it be?

Dark Void kinda tried to be it, but it was smelly and the weird alien world isn't as cool as a pulpy WW2 where Hollywood actors are Nazi spies. Also, Jennifer Connelly and Howard Hughes.

I think there are tons of great movies or TV licenses or books that would make wonderful universes and backdrops for games. The problem is once the licensing costs and demands of the original licenses are factored in, the product inevitably turns into some derivative piece of shit trying to ape the film.

See something like The Matrix games which had a wonderful new universe to explore but were shit.

I remember playing it and finding the first level too hard to pass. You fly a plane around a circle but I couldn't do it! I'm curious if there were jetpack parts.

edit: wow, watching videos on youtube, maybe I was better off never passing that section.

btw, Dark Void Zero is actually really fun. It's that NES style tie-in game to Dark Void.

I like it when a game simply resembles a famous movie or show. As much as people hate on Oni, I liked that game, and it's probably the best Ghost in the Shell game.

Stoney: Yeah, I'm aware of the licensing issues. They're horrible. Even dealing with stuff that should be simple becomes stupid complicated. And if you're really unlucky, you'll actually have to deal with actors.

Screw the reality of it. This thread is just a mental exercise to play with what kinds of movies and shows would translate well into a different media.

When I first saw the ad for Dark Void, I assumed it was a Rocketeer game. I thought maybe it would be The ROCKETEER versus The Dark Void!

How about an A-Team game based on Banjo/Kazooie N&B, so you can brawl, and then build a crazy vehicle before BUSTING OUT OF A BARN!

I don't care, the horrible mangling of the story and dialed-up-to-eleven and utterly random voice acting have elevated this series to some sort of cult trash status in Germany, at least for a ~~chosen few~~ small deranged fanbase. Playing the game will probably cause horrible internal bleeding and spontaneous defecation through every possible and impossible orifice, but by Jove, I'm gonna like it.

I'd kill for a Starship Troopers game that played like Earth Defense Force. As close as I think I'll ever get it using the ST soundtrack while playing EDF.

I hated that they cancelled the Snake Plissken game too. Someone needs to get the license, get Carpenter and Russell on board, and just make their idea for the final movie, Escape from Earth, into a game.

I'd never even heard of Escape from Earth until this thread. Wow.

You know, I wasn't a fan of Escape from LA. It was a bit too much like leaping from Evil Dead to Army of Darkness, without even having the transitional step of Evil Dead 2. Raimi pulled that off, but it didn't work here. Carpenter and Russell can both do comedy (Big Trouble in Little China), but Plissken isn't meant to be over-the-top funny.

I thought Escape from LA started off good but once Snake caught up with Cuervo's gang it all went downhill.

I'm hoping the remake is dead. There's only one man who can play Snake Plissken. I'd love to read the script for Escape from Earth if it exists.

i always thought The Warriors would make an awesome game. it basically follows a beat-em up arcade game formula-- they go to different "stages" where they have to fight their way out, with bosses along the way.

was extremely surprised when Rockstar licensed it. even more surprised when I found out it was GTA style and basically a huge prequel to the movie.

It's more like a re-telling of the movie's storyline, with lots of flashbacks. And it's less of a GTA style game than a brawler with character progression. I really liked it.

The Thing was decent. I wished they would have stayed away from using Childs and MacReady. I prefer not knowing their fate. The atmosphere and sound were good. I just hated how one minute you would test a teammate and he'd be human, the next he'd turn just because a scripted moment dictated he would do so.

Yeah, I agree that not knowing the fate of those two is really the whole point of that movie's ending. But that kind of conceit always bothers me. I really got perturbed when Alien³, in its very first scene, entirely negated the hard-won successes of the far superior Aliens movie which preceded it.

When I first started playing The Saboteur, with all that black-and-white, I was treating it like Schindler's List: The Game. As soon as I realized the Nazis wouldn't recognize my terrorist tomfoolery if I danced an Irish jig in front of them, I was able to enjoy it.
