Quote
From Dust is about a tribe that has lost its memory – a tribe devoid of culture, of history, of tradition, the foundations of identity and civilisation– and at the mercy of hostile forces of nature. In an effort to reclaim their history, the tribe performs the only ritual that it can remember and summon you – a mysterious force known as the Breath – to aid them by manipulating the very earth they stand upon.

Isn't this the tech from a demo a year or three back? I recall there was something that looked a lot like this, an engine built around realistic depiction of real-time terraforming, lots of progressive texturing I think.

This looks really sweet.

All the tech for this game was shown off early last year (That tech demo above might've been what you watched Chrono?) and it was briefly talked about here in the E3 thread or some such

Yeah, I think so.

I remember saying at the time, "Wow. That's pretty. I wonder how the hell they're going to build a game around that..."

7.5 from Gamespot, but the main complaints were the AI pathfinding and some issues with console controls.

Is this strictly mission based or is there some kind of free play mode to extend the ezperience?

I was showing a friend this and went to zoom in on a village, I still had a little bit of lava left which set the village on fire promptly killing them all :'(

So far I don't understand the control issues some of the critics are having, I think using a pad is really nice and intuitive for this game, if a little imprecise but that seems more like an intentional mechanic than a problem. No problems with AI either, a line shows their intended path and if you want them to take shorter routes you can make paths up craggy cliffs and over rivers with sand and they modify their routes accordingly, it's a little like lemmings in the regard that they'll just go for objectives even if say to get there they have to walk right next to the mouth of an active volcano, it's up to you to make safer paths before they get to the area. Sometimes you can order them to go back, but not always.

Is this strictly mission based or is there some kind of free play mode to extend the ezperience?

The regular stages have no time limit you can mess around and do extra stuff at your leisure, I haven't tried challenge mode yet, but every new story stage unlocks the challenge mode variant for that stage

It told me I was out of turns without even letting me play once. I think it's broken.

Finished all the mainline stuff, secondary objectives memories etc, I spent quite a lot of time in the main game (8-10+ hours? Not sure really) but I also just messed around a lot as well as did all the extra stuff. Loved the game, hope they do bring more mainline content and a level creator, they kind of give you a demo of user level creation at the end of the game... Won't spoil it any more than that, and they have mentioned bringing the feature later (PC version?).

Throughout the game you unlock challenge levels, there's 30 all up, they chuck you in a situation with an objective to complete like 'save the villages from the lava only using the power of water', the challenges are really good and actually require good skills and/or problem solving. A couple of them so far  are seemingly really difficult but actually have simple solutions which are clear if you interpret the challenge description correctly, the seventh challenge called Xuenylom ;) (the description reads 'a well disguised hommage to one of our main inspirations') seems to be stumping a few people, but it's actually trivial, though I guess the wording of the challenge is cryptic enough to obscure the solution....

Played the demo today.

First level was peachy.

Second level said, "Make a bridge for the villagers to reach the icon."

I did.

They didn't.

This looks pretty cool but it sounds like there are some issues that make it a game to wait on.  Got Catherine and 3SO coming, then Deus Ex, then the Fall/Winter release craziness, so I'll wait for a sale on this.

I really enjoy the world building but if they are going to make it so a fire can wipe out the whole map, they should give me a mini map or some other better communication. I lose whole villages witout realizing it on larger maps.you can park 4 water trees around a fire tree and still not have a blaze take care of itself and it is hard to build fire walls.

Throw in an achievement that promotes lots of plant growth and you are fucked

Try making fire breaks in the sand (suck up the sand till theres rock making lines where trees can't grow hence fire can't cross) and putting fire trees out of commission as soon as you can, i.e. fire tree on a beach, suck up the sand around it so the water rises and floods the tree. Remembering to use the abilities efficiently like 'put out fire' is pretty key, and getting dem fire protection flags quickly too. I found fire trees a problem on my first playthrough but on my second I've found them pretty easy to deal with.

Yea, but its trial and error. They will have the lava come down a new way,or a new water source spurt from the ground, or surprise rainfall and wipe out a town before you know it. Its easy to do when you have tried it already but you have to keep resetting the stage to figure out what is coming.

Great idea having a cheevo for not losing 5 towns. Without constant resets that wont be happening on a first run.

Also second attempts take fucking forever. Even if you know exactly what to do, you have to pick up lava 80 times to rebuild that wall again, then the new wall you found out you needed on the last attept. It takes so long. I guess i should be saving more often, but sometimes that traps you too. Shit design

Yeah I found disaster management the most exciting part, I never had to retry a stage until the last few stages (though I did get fucked up a number of times, I wasn't gong for the < 5 villages cheev), also if your going for full tree coverage wait till right at the end of a stage, or you can just finish the stage and it autosaves so you can pick up at the end and finish off if you need to later.

The Raging Earth stage ruined my shit, wish I saved during that. I retried that about 5 times, 2 of those times I reset because the ooga boogas insisted on traversing a sheer cliff and wouldn't change course no matter how many times lava kept killing them. Going back for my second attempt now and the < 5 villages destroyed achievement, already 1 village down on High Tides, don't know if resetting a stage resets how many villages you lost on it too though

i spent about an hour on the third level where it introduces lava. i had the level beaten within like 15 minutes but i spent the rest of the time diverting the water around in different ways. eventually finished with this:

really enjoying it.
however it sucks that the keyboard/mouse controls are awful and i need to use my controller anyway.

the sandbox nature of this game is weird because the only real objective is to populate all the villages then get to the door way out. how you do it is completely up to you. it makes it feel like i'm... like, doing it wrong? i get by a stage but i feel like i may have gamed the system or that i'm missing a key gameplay element that would have made the map make a lot more sense.

right now i'm on a map where there's a big volcano and it's dumping lava rivers down the side of a mountain so i'm trying to divert it around so i can get by.
