Both companies are hoping to wait out the current generation, and extending an already elongated console life-cycle despite clear signs that Nintendo will launch its next machine by the end of 2012.

"Both MS and Sony are telegraphing to each other that they're delaying, to milk the current [generation] and fill in previous craters better," one insider who has worked with the first-party companies like Sony and Microsoft told us.

Other sources with access to first-party companies, speaking to Kotaku anonymously because they aren't authorized to be talking about Microsoft and Sony's plans, said that they too are hearing that 2014 is the target date, though some believe 2013 could happen if either company feels pushed.

Our insider believes that any new Xbox in 2013 would only be a Kinect-upgraded 360, not the next-gen console that would come in 2014. That source says that Microsoft doesn't even know what parts will be in the next Xbox. They say the company's board "is wrestling with whether to be profitable on day one," as Nintendo's Wii was presumed to be, or to once again launch a new console at a loss, which is what Sony and Microsoft usually do.

A wait for a new Xbox or PlayStation until 2014 would make the Xbox 360 the lead Microsoft gaming console for nine years and the PlayStation 3 Sony's chief console for eight. That would be an unusually long time for successful game consoles to retain their importance.

2 1/2 more years of sub HD performance at 30FPS.   :-\

PC Gaming is looking more and more enticing.

I got my 360 kind of late so I'm fine with them stretching shit out a bit, and considering how much stuff launched at this gen I'll probably not be jumping into the next round right away anyway.

I would be absolutely happy with a 2014 launch, but I do not think that will be the case at all.

2012 Nintendo, 2013 for Sony/MS. Bet on it.

I would prefer Fall 2012. That would be 7 years for the 360 which is long enough for a generation especially since those consoles would be getting continued third party support anyway for years after that. 2014 seems like too long. At worst I would hope 2013.

I think what these companies are afraid of is launching 500 and 600 dollar consoles again. I think they both realize that was a mistake and so they are waiting to do a technology jump but not have it sacrifice their initial price points.

So the playstation devision is in the green? Or black or whatever the color it is to signify that that devision is profitable?

That's cool. I figured that was still some huge moneysink.

They should be back, but they merged some of the other products together (Viao and Walkman was grouped with the PS products, etc) so it made it kinda difficult to know exactly.

Plus IIRC they restructured again from April 1st and that could make it even more difficult.

Was the 360 $500 when it launched? Shit man, that was a lot.

Nope,$399 and $299.Elite model bumped it to $480,I think.

My theory is that $600-$800 console can be a reality. It is a reality in Europe, time of dirt cheap consoles is over.

If you can't spend $600 every 6 years on your gaming(hobby) equipment... :yuck

I really strongly disagree and you'd have to have the memory of a sea bass to not be able to think of a very recent example.

When you push $500 you have passed the amount of a minimum wage two-week paycheck in North America.  You might say, so what, save a couple paychecks, but the console industry is fueled by people who are fiscally irresponsible.  The other problem is that when you push $500 it leads to people thinking "Well, I could get a new computer for not much more than that", and that is yet another place console manufacturers don't want to be.

I think this generation pretty clearly cemented that $299 is the sweet spot, $399 can be gotten away with if necessary, and not one fucking penny more.

I think that competition is the key point here,if competition is better than you at cheaper price point...you are fucked

Sony problem(aside horrible architecture) was that they were trying to sell something that costed  $800 for $600.I say fuck that, sell it with a profit and make sure that you get all third party support (moneyhat to get some exclusives, etc).Whatever you do just make sure that you have steady stream of games on monthly basis. And make your console design flexible so it can reach $300 point in 4 years.

Europe is pretty much like that, either put it up or shut up.If you want to play, you have to pay.

There also one another thing, warranty issues. In my county nobody cares anymore about brands, why?
Everything has like 2,3,5 years warranty.Buy some cheap TV from xyz company and you get 3 year warranty and everything is done through shops.

I agree that console manufacturers would be stupid to ignore the stuff you wrote, but prices are definitely going up.
3DS....$250
Nintendo 360...$350 minimum

Maybe Apple makes some gaming console and charges $800 for it,that would be fun to watch.

I think there's an element of them wondering where they're going to go after the next generation also, so they'll string it out for as long as possible, with technology upgrading in smaller increments it makes sense for console cycles to take longer, processors aren't getting any smaller or cheaper to make any time soon like they used too, just bigger, hotter and more expensive. There needs to be that OMG factor when looking from the quality of one console to the next, mass markets don't really fall for resolution and frame rates afaik.

No system should ever be more than $299 and I don't think they will, unless there is some premium package SKU.  I don't even think the PSP2 will go a cent above $299, at least with the bareboned model.  This generation was a huge lesson in affordability vs. technology and I don't think they will be making the same mistake twice.  People just don't have the kind of disposable cash (or credit card balance, most likely) to impulse buy a $600 machine because they just had to have the new Madden or GTA.  I doubt that will change for 2014.  They'd rather launch a console for $299 at 2014 than $399 at 2013 or $499 at 2012.  It isn't like the current systems have aged _that_ badly.  If people are that upset about it, get a PC.
