The back-and-forth went basically like this:

OBAMA:  I'd authorize forces to go into Pakistan if we could get OBL.

MCCAIN:  You can't say stuff like that!  Pakistan's a sovereign country!

OBAMA:  So you wouldn't?

MCCAIN:  Well, I wouldn't publicly admit that I'd do it...

We had some laughs about it in the old politix thread.

Why exactly did McCain not want to go into Pakistan?

Because if Obama said 2+2=4 McCain would say it equals 78 instead.

For whatever reason Fox was the closest news channel to whatever I was watching when the news broke and Geraldo was the first thing I came across. As happy as I was to see Bin Laden dead even I couldn't stomach the fox brand of cheerleading Geraldo was doing. He was two seconds away from just pulling it out and masturbating on live TV. I had to switch to another news channel.

OBL: studying

9/11: At school walking across the quad.  Some blonde kid was on his knees in the middle of the quad just staring at the ground.

It's funny because I was sleeping when you woke me up about OBL.

Edit:  Oh I see you and rodi already posted about it.  Just to be clear though: I didn't go back to sleep.  I was awake, I was just lying down.

9/11: in between 10th grade classes at my DC-area high school.  A friend of mine came to my classroom door and said, "Hey, we're leaving.  We're going into DC to hunt terrorists."  I picked up my bags but my chemistry teacher stopped me.  He said we had more important things to do and didn't even let us watch TV.

OBL: Ironically enough, at the end of a field exercise prepping to deploy to Afghanistan.  Over the loud speaker where they announce simulated rocket attacks they said something like, "This is not a drill.  Osama bin Laden has been killed."  There were a couple cheers but it was actually pretty anti-climatic.

O rly? Army?

9/11 - On my way to work when reports of the first plane hitting came on the radio. Turned on the TV when I got to work and watched the 2nd plane hit on live TV.
OBL - Flipped over to ESPN to watch SC but the baseball game was still on. I saw on the ticker at the bottom of the screen that Obama was about to make a speech.Flipped over to the news from there.

Any people giving credit to bush should be referred to this video:

If OBL was caught in Afghanistan, I would be more sympathetic about the claim.

Gary Faulkner, who was arrested in Pakistan last year while on a personal quest to kill Osama bin Laden, was happy to hear that the terrorist leader had been killed by U.S. forces on Sunday. And he's taking a little credit for himself.

"I was in those mountains when I was arrested," Faulkner told the Greeley Colorado Tribune, referring to the area near Islamabad, Pakistan where he was arrested. "I think maybe I flushed him down out of the mountains into the foothills."

9/11: Had decided to skip school. Flipping channels, most broadcasts cut-off normal programming, thought it weird, landed on local ABC affiliate, unfortunately saw the second jet hit the towers, went numb. Remember how confused everything was.

OBL: Got a text about Trump's show getting cut-out. Laughed. Turned channel to NBC, laughed more. Fuck off Trump! Turned channel to CNN, laughed even more at Wolf Blitzer as he desperately tried to inflate his importance. Then cringed 'cause I was watching Wolf Blitzer.

Anyone who grew up in Seattle, do you remember the jets scrambling and the semi-frequent flyovers that day? Growing up in Puget Sound, you're aware of the strategic importance of the area (and Hanford in central WA). Had never, though experienced such an eerie lack of normal air-traffic given Sea-Tac, Lewis, Boeing and Paine fields; instead, substituted with the screech of fighters. Won't forget that.

DM, I lived in Mukilteo, near Paine Field. That loud crackle from the jets made an already strange, bewildering day into something else. Man, I remember they were still scrambled that night. Remarkable how silent the skys were, and then every so often the silence rended by the fighters.

Also, my brother-in-law's brother (BILB, ?) went to PLU on a swimming scholarship. Saw the campus once when he was graduating. It was a nice contrast to the UW. He had a really nice room; much better than the hell that I later endured in Haggett.

I now live in Greenlake and do a lot of my runs in the U-District. It's interesting to see how much things have changed over the years on the Ave.

My conservative co-posters are trying to feign a holier-than-thou apolitical stance, despite spending the last couple years parroting the dumbest partisan talking points to come through the Drudge Report.

Seems to be a lot of Methodis-murmur going on outside the US about if the shooting was justified or not, that bin Laden was "murdered", if the plan was to wack him instead of capture him etc. Dunno what difference this makes, people going on about how Pakistan's sovereignty has been violated and so forth. Is this some sort of big revelation, that the US does unilateral operations to protect their interests inside other sovereign nations? I think the death toll from the UAV missions along the Pakistani border should have tipped people off?

One thing that made me go "huh" was this thing in the NYT though:

Quote
Several experts on the rules of engagement in combat said that in a raid on a target as dangerous as Bin Laden, the Navy Seals team would be justified to open fire at the slightest commotion when they burst into a room.

Hehe. Wonder what sort of intel they are going on here. Would love to hear why he's considered so dangerous in close quarters battle. Dood is fucking old, has been ill enough not to be able to update his video blog... What would suggest he would take out a room full of SEAL:s? His publicity-popshots with an AK-47?

They had a no-knock warrant, ok??

yeah I don't care either way of course, but still seems unnecessary to try to justify shootin' his ass by saying he was BU BU DANGEROUS!

I don't know why we are being so honest about what happened in that room

Presumably he has (had) bodyguards galore?

To be fair, the people on the hijacked planes and in the WTC were unarmed.
