Modern Warfare 3
« on: May 11, 2011, 11:19:02 AM »

But our sources tell us Modern Warfare 3 will continue along that storyline, delivering a "world in crisis" feel to the aftermath of the U.S. invasion. However, it looks like it won't be another take on Red Dawn, a post-U.S. invasion storyline already explored by Homefront. While it's unclear where specifically the game will be set, Modern Warfare 3 will have a urban setting, much like the U.S. missions in Modern Warfare 2, with military vehicles, including tanks, rolling through suburban streets.

The story may also include prominent characters from Modern Warfare 2, like Captain John "Soap" MacTavish and Captain John Price. Modern Warfare 2 ended with Price, Soap and a Russian informant codenamed Nikolai on the run as international fugitives following their killing of Lieutenant General Shepherd.

The biggest shift for the game appears to be in its breadth. We're told that Modern Warfare 3 will take place on a much larger, epic scale. It appears the game will explore the lead up to a blossoming set of engagements that could pull in other countries, creating a potential World War III scenario. The game will also feature large, urban destructible environments.

The focus on larger maps and destructible environments brings to mind competitor Electronic Arts' Battlefield series which made a name for itself with those two keystones. Battlefield 3 is also set for a 2011 fall release, meaning the two games could in theory be vying directly with one another for gamers' attention. Battlefield 3, as shown by EA in previous events this year, will take place in a modern setting and feature large maps and destructible environments.

They'll probably drop a video before E3 and then follow up with some coverage at E3. That's been their pattern for the last few games. They generally put out a video during the NBA playoffs which are going on now.

I'm not exactly sure what my expectations are. It's not the same Infinity Ward. It's truly a new company. Which is both interesting and worrying at the same time. I loved the SP of MW 2 so I hope I get something I really like but who knows with all the influx of people and the multiple studios now working on this title. Same with the MP although whatever direction they take on the MP side, I hope they work more towards a balanced game like Treyarch.

my dream game would be where you play a splinter cell located in a small baptist town, planning to convert it to sharia law. it'd be open world, and progress from blowing up an evangelical church to rounding up all the white wimmenz to invading a tractor parts swap meet to leveling a strip mall to a final blazing showdown in the crowded aisles of wal-mart, using morbidly obese children as cover

IW has the better engine compared to Treyarch so it should feel better in that regard.

Looks neat. I loved the sp of mw 2 and spec ops so I'm looking forward to it. Will hold off judgement until I see the mp.

rumor about multiplayer is that wager matches are gone

I really liked the wager matches.  Though, I'll probably pass on MW3 in favor or Battlefield 3.  Unlike BC2 and MW2, BF3 and MW3 are releasing around the same time.

rumor about multiplayer is that wager matches are gone

I never really expected them to be there although I also really like wager matches. Treyarch and IW definitely have/had different philosophies when it comes comes to the MP side. But anything that was in the Treyarch game won't necessarily be in this one. There is a lot of good feature stuff though in Black Ops that was great like Wager Matches, Theater Mode, Combat Record, etc.

I think Treyarch is better when it comes to balancing but arguably IW tries more new stuff on the MP side. I prefer the balance side of things so we'll see I guess. There are things I look forward to on the MP side I'm sure from this game and some things that worry me based on MW 2. I hope they actively try to balance it a little more away from some of the annoying stuff that was in MW 2. That's why I much preferred Black Ops.

It's difficult to expect how it will turn out considering this is a different Infinity Ward, and if you notice at the end of the trailer, Sledgehammer Games has its logo there too. (I believe Sledgehammer is some people who were formally at Visceral Games, or EA Redwood, or something.)

The same rumor also suggested the call of duty points are in single player as well, and there is a three player co-op mode.  I'll post the blurb if I can find it again. here:
Quote
We have just received from an unlikely source – but very trustworthy source – of some big Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer details. Although unwilling to give further details, what with the official gameplay trailer tonight, our source said that further details of it will be unveiled ‘in the coming weeks’.

Our source did say that the game will feature cod points, but in a heavily ‘redesigned and refocused way’. This could mean you earn it differently, as he said that ‘wager matches are unlikely to return’. It could also mean you spend it in different ways, as he goes on to say ‘single player has a very multiplayer feel to it, with some interesting ideas to it’. We can only speculate that this may be the ability to buy weapons in single player with cod points, although our source said not to take his word for that specific point.

He also said that there will be ‘a huge improvement in the number of maps, modes and game types’, and to expect ‘more people on maps than you would normally expect’. 32 players was thrown about, but he didn’t want to comment any more on it. He did say whilst there will be no more wager matches, as he said Infinity Ward are in the mind of how they didn’t copy Zombies, they won’t copy wager matches, but he did say there will be some incorporated ‘similar modes’ to that of wager matches.

He also let slip that ‘they might include teams of three for one mode’ although he stopped into going into any more details, sounding unsure whether it would make the cut. Finally he said there may be ‘up to 23 maps from launch, but they have plans for huge post-support DLC’. This echoes what fourzerotwo said on twitter about Infinity Ward having plans for longer post-launch support.

Whatever the design differences the different teams have, it would be dumb to go back to the old unlock method.  Currency made the unlocks in Black Ops much, much better than the older games.  Maybe they will make it like Uncharted 2 where one pool of currency is for every game mode (single, co-op, versus).

It is indeed a different IW and Sledgehammer was started up by Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey who were behind Dead Space and Visceral. They were also supposed to be working on their own COD title but when the whole crazy shit went down they were pulled onto this game to help out. So yeah. I don't think anyone knows exactly what to expect. They have a great engine. The question is can they build a great game with all that talent defection.

No offense to the Sledgehammer dudes but at EA it seems like they could make just about whatever game they wanted and now they're doing COD games. Sure, the money is there being a big series and all but personally I'd rather work on new projects, especially since nobody going to remember my studio as the ones that made a Call of Duty game.

I don't know. That seems to be a personal motivation question which is up to each individual. Visceral seems to be fine. And Sledgehammer is a new entity. So it seems like nobody got hurt and everybody moved on to do something different or at worst a new studio was created where only one existed before. All that really matters is whether good games come out of it on the end side for the consumer from either company.

I kinda feel the same way about the IW situation and Respawn. It was a bad situation no doubt. And now there are two companies where there was once 1. Seems to be a win win for consumers outside of the havok in the personal lives of people these situations tend to create.

Holy crap.

Listen up PC f4gs, nobody cares the game is going to look better on your $3000 PCs. MW3, on ancient Quake 3 engine, will still sell 20M copies (19.5M on consoles, 0.5M on PCs), that is 5 times more than your precious BF3 (3.6M on consoles, 0.4M on PCs).

Shut up already.

BF3 is a CoD wannabe, not the other way around, fools.

GAF is so shitty they had to create a thread so idiots can go snipe at each other about the two games. The two games play utterly differently.

Paying $20 for map packs is one thing, this is next level shit.

Imagine if all the people that got mad about Horse Armor in 2006 could see the bleak microtransaction future that awaited in 2011. DLC unlock codes, 800MSP DLC a week after a game launches, avatar clothing, and now this.

MCV lifts the lid on the new subscription online Call of Duty service that will arrive with Modern Warfare 3

Activision has at last detailed the mysterious premium Call of Duty: Elite service.

Going into public beta this summer, Elite will ship with November’s Modern Warfare 3.  The service, as we know, has been developed by new Activision studio Beachhead though has also had input from Infinity Ward, Treyarch and Sledgehammer.

Also of importance is the fact that Elite is very much media agnostic. It will, as the publisher describes it, be available “across four screens” – web, mobile, TV and console. For gaming it will be compatible with PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.

But what consumers will want to know is what elements of the service will be free and what will be charged for.

Many parts of Elite will be free to use, such as career groups and many of the social networking features. However, those who opt for the premium Elite membership and sign up for the monthly fee will get a host of extras, most notably early and full access to all in-game DLC.

No price has yet been put on Elite membership, though Activision has hinted that it will be “less than any comparable gaming or entertainment service out there” – perhaps £5 a month or less. Non Elite members will still be able to purchase map packs as normal.

“Elite was built from the group up to change the way our consumers experience multiplayer in all current and future Call of Duty games,” Activision’s European digital marketing director for Call of Duty digital product Mark Cox told MCV.

“This is one of our most exciting and ambitious undertakings for Activision”

So, what of the features? Here’s a look at what to expect:

Career: Detailed player stats (kill to death ratio, time spent, favourite weapons, loadouts, level, saved screenshots and videos, personal bests, etc). Players can view results from recent matches, via timeline and map showing every kill and death (including location of killer/victim). Can compare directly with other players by searching for their gamertag.

Connect: Join groups based on interest. For example, search for ‘photography’ and you are automatically entered into a group with other players have the same interest. If the group doesn’t exist, Elite automatically creates it. You can then access Career stats for group members. Can also browse theatre mode and videos. Looking through most liked, most viewed, staff picks, most recent or any videos you are tagged in. MW3 will introduce clan support.

Compete: Regular events and competitions set up by developers, e.g. highest kill streak, screenshot or video competitions, etc. Prizes range from special emblems for your profile to COD merchandise, an iPad 2 and a Jeep Cherokee. MW3 will introduce group vs group competitions, clan vs clan, intra-clan competition and leagues.

Improve: Detailed information on every weapon, perk and map in the game, including tips, stats and video guides from pros. Maps show objective locations for different types of multiplayer mode. Shows more player stats (e.g. how many times people have used each kill streak bonus). After MW3, Elite will call on entire Call of Duty community to provide expertise and guidance.

How much will you pay for this? For quite a bit of the content, you'll pay nothing, by the looks of it: a lot of the career information and the whole membership of groups business were both cited as things that will be free to all, while a Premium membership will not only get you an advanced range of Elite features, but will also allow you to access all DLC – and all future DLC - at no extra cost (it's still being offered for purchase a la carte, of course). I asked Jamie Berger, Call of Duty's vice president of digital, what will happen to that free DLC you've been using if you decide to cancel your premium membership, and he said, "We'll tell you more about that later, but I think we'll have a lot of good news for people." That sounds positive, but good news always does.

Started reading but a bit too spoilerish for my taste. Even though I'm not playing COD overall for the story I still want the roller coaster ride experience. I'll wait for the videos.

can you explain to me why you're not interested in BF3 even though you seem to play every new fps out there? I barely seen you post about that even though it look fucking awesome.

Listen dumbass. I've put more hours into Bad Company 2 and Call of Duty than you ever will. Guaranteed. Along with pretty much every shooter that comes down the pike. Unlike you I actually play games and post about them. I'll buy both games. So take your dumbass I need to pick a side and be a "video game warrior nerd" like you some place else.

To be fair to me you have a tendency to post a lot of stupid shit. So...

To answer your question in a legit manner

When BF 3 starts posting actual gameplay from the MP side, especially of the console version. I'll start posting in that thread. So far they've only shown sp stuff and the sp stuff doesn't interest me in Battlefield. Only the MP does. Hence my lack of posts in that BF thread so far.

Starting from here on out I promise to start from scratch with you and stop being rude as long you promise not to make any more motion control threads. Deal?
