Okay, I bought a wireless router the other day.

The modem/router combo I have from Embarq is a 2wire. In order to get the router working with the 2wire you have to bridge the 2wire modem.

Here's the steps I took:

I then installed the wireless Linksys router.

It connects to the network but not to the internet each and every time. I get Access Local Only.

For the record I'm running Vista home premium sp2.

There's a well-known incompatibility between Vista and certain routers that used to cause this kind of problem. Though I thought it was already fixed long ago in one of the SPs.

This was usually the cause of wireless issues in Vista in my experience. On that page there's an automatic fixer thingy you can run that should solve the problem, or you could set the registry key manually. Wonder why they didn't just set it by default.

If you log into your linksys, is it getting an IP from the modem? You should use a wire to log into it.

Ugh, is this using the install disk that came with your router? I never used one of them. Just do it manually, when you set up your router if your modem is connected all you should need to do is

1) connect the ethernet cable from your modem to your routers WAN port

2) connect your laptop to your router, wired connection might be necessary for setup

3) log into your router through your browser on the router or in the manual/box there should be something with the default IP of the router. Usually 192.168.0.1 or 1.1 or 15.1 (yes type 192.168.0.1 as if it was a URL in your browser, should go to the router)

4) enter the default password for the router.

5) set it up

I've nearly always used linksys products as well

Yes, I'm using the installation cd.

My router has 4 ethernet ports and an internet port. Do I put the ethernet port running from my desktop to the router's internet port or take the ethernet cable that came with the router and put that in the internet port, connecting it to the modem?

Your wireless is functioning properly, but you router and your modem are not communicating.

And if you haven't already:
unplug the modem and router from power
plug modem in and wait for it to come online(make sure the only thing plugged into the modem is the router)
plug in router and let it come online
profit?

Phone line -> internet port on router
Ethernet from computer -> ethernet port on router
ethernet from modem -> router

Yeah. 192.168.1.258.

That's the control panel.

I can log into my router control panel too by using 192.168.1.1 if I put the modem in bridge mode. But still can't connect. I'm guessing it's because I don't have the phone line in my router?

Change your router to 192.168.10.1, part of the problem is that they are both on the '1' segment.

Don't change it to 192.168.2.x

It needs to be 192.168.1.x

Where x is a number that isn't already assigned to a device on your network. Are you using DHCP? It should be assigning it automatically to avoid any IP conflicts.

Unless I'm missing something the 192.168.1 part should be the same for everything on your network. The only numbers that change should be the last segment.

Could be wrong though if you're doing something funky.

And to be clear, you can connect to the internet without the router? But when trying to go through the router, you have no access to the internet?

Assuming that's correct, there's no login that you need to put into the router configuration for internet access? If the router is running DHCP, are all your computers set to have an IP address automatically assigned instead of manually assigned?

Went to Centurylink, they upgraded the internet to 10mbs and reduced our price by 10 bucks, gave a new free modem (ONLY a modem thank god) and got my wireless set up hooked up and the net is great and the 10 mbs service hasn't even activated yet.
