Yeah, that shitpile was called "Toshinden Subaru."

Even worse was this garbage:

But hey, Puzzle Arena Toshinden was okay!

And in the end, the best Toshinden game that came out was the only 2D version ever made, for the Gameboy.

Ehrgeiz had the most annoying main menu sound effects in any game that I can think of.

I had the Saturn version of Toshinden URA, not a very good game.  I also bought Virtua Fighter Kids for some reason, I think it was deeply discounted at the time.  Saturn had some decent 3d fighting games but nothing that I'd really want to play again, except to laugh at quality works like LAST BRONX!

Only game in the series I've played... was actually the first game I downloaded when I downloaded my first Game Boy emu. Pretty fun, reminded me a lot of the Neo Geo Pocket Color fighters.

graphics look like actual stuff instead of blocky blurry garbage, story scenes are almost always skippable (and no more text-only scenes), va is now passable along with the "camera" directing in most cutscenes, things like weapon and stat upgrades have much more streamlined integration in games, most games aim for a 10-20 hr playtime, action games are fucking awesome and incredibly varied, fanboy arguments are shit forever, and thus games are MUCH MUCH better than they used to be

there were more bizarre fighting games around that time, like VF Kids and that Sonic one and Fighters Megamix and Tech Romancer.  not all or any PS1, but still.

btw, I'd totally touch dick for a psychic force xbla

I miss good rpgs that didn't take them self too seriously. Nowadays rpgs are also ruined with the need for voice acting, too bad most va sucks, and idk but hearing these badly voiced pre-school scripts being read out loud always takes me out of the game. Plain old text will still do for a big part of a rpg imo, if you have to use va limit it with cutscenes and then some.
Also I would love to see world maps back. It's fun exploring planets with airships and boats. I used to imagine next-gen world maps for the ps2 back in the days. And then they abolished the concept forever..
And it also seems to me that too many rpgs are way too battle oriented instead of making battles just a part of a rpg. In some games battling is the half of the game. Rpgs started to suck since the PS2.

I think the PS2 slaughtered the PSX.  While the PSX had some great game concepts, it lacked the technology to see it through.  The PS2 allowed it to happen, which is why there are so many great games on the system, in terms of both quality and quantity.  I think most 32 bit 3D games are near unplayable these days.  Some good ideas but there are very few that weren't successfully or better reproduced on successor consoles.

Anyway, yes, Blue Dragon is a great game.  Probably the most underrated JRPG this generation.  It's the only PSX/PS2 era styled JRPG for the modern consoles.  If you want any more of them, you're pretty much dependent on the PSP for new releases of RPGs in that vein, considering the odds of Blue Dragon 2 for 360 is nil.

:lol i was about to say

the shit i described was the norm back in the day.  games nowadays still play similar to what they did when developers moved to 3d, but they've made HUGE improvements over everything i described, making games more streamlined and thus more fun.

of course a weeaboo might not notice this because they spend all their time playing games from devs that are stuck in the past gen

YES. That terrible, awkward transition from beautiful 16-bit 2D to ugly 32-bit 3D kills so many PSX games for me. Like I'd be embarrassed to list all the PSX "classics" I have yet to play that I missed back in the day

yes, exactly

i've always compared the ps1 to the nes because both were revolutionary but the tech combined with the developer's -- erm, how should i say it?  not lack of skill but lack of good ideas to draw off of because everything was still so new -- hobbled both systems.  the snes and ps2 are idely considered the best consoles because they just improved on the previous gen's games.

YES. That terrible, awkward transition from beautiful 16-bit 2D to ugly 32-bit 3D kills so many PSX games for me. Like I'd be embarrassed to list all the PSX "classics" I have yet to play that I missed back in the day

poster probably has not played suikoden II and arc the lad 2, hence the use of "classic".

I've played both, but I sure don't remember either of them being 3D :smug

I'd actually wager that rpgs back in the psx days that are 3d are lot better than 3d games of other genres, but 3d rpgs aren't really dependent on physics or anything. so unless you're a graphic whore, psx 3d rpgs really aren't that bad in any regard and you can find games with equal amount of depth (vagrant story for instance) on the psx as you can find on the psx.

both are great systems when it comes to rpgs, though.

Hmmm. Looking at my psx collection now and...

3d psx games I think still hold up:

- Ridge Racer 4
- any and all Wipeout games
- Metal Gear Solid (shame about the aiming)
- Metal Gear Solid VR Missions
- Soul Reaver
- Tony Hawk
- Crash
- Spyro
- Resident Evil games
- Dino Crisis games
- Fear Effect
- Crash Team Racing
- Tomba 2
- Final Fantasy games
- Chrono Cross
- Brave Fencer Musashi
- Vagrant Story
- Mega Man Legends games
- Tron Bonne
- Threads of Fate
- Intelligent Qube
- Devil Dice
- Jumping Flash
- Ghost in the Shell
- Omega Boost
- Pepsiman
- Incredible Crisis
- No One Can Stop Mr. Domino
- Ore no Ryouri
- Ape Escape
- Jet Moto
- Parappa the Rapper
- Um Jammer Lammy
- Medieval
- Tiny Tank

Most, if not all of these primarily feature 3d.

I think it's very overstated to say that psx games don't hold up these days, particularly the 3d ones. That's not to say ALL of them hold up, which is ridiculous, but I find that many that were good then are still great now.

In fact, these games right here are a big part why psx is my favorite system but different strokes.
